New to list, but folks on lists are wonderful! Need more info on James F. PEDEN, lived near Sexton PO in 1900, listed as a farmer. Wife was Ellen Davis, one child shows on 1880 census--Martha born 9 Mar 1879. they had five other children, Lydia, Allie Etta, Ben, James Fenton, and Belle. I have conflicting birth years and would like to see if there are descendants out there. Saw a Message on a board but no response to my posting as it was older. James F the father died on 1 June 1908, Ellen put in for a Civil War pension but I don't know if it was approved. Sorry, he was a Yankee, may not have been too popular in Va. I hope to check the 1910 census soon. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Kaye

Greetings Listers! I just got word from the VAGenWeb list. It appears that www.genseekers.com is back. The following is quoted by permission. A word to the wise. Eve S. There is no content of their own. In order to get the "5-day free trial" you have to surrender a credit card or bank account number. You have to cancel within 5 days or you get dinged. Guess what? The cancellation e-mail bounces. Does this surprise you? One person who recently fell for the come-on had his/her account dinged not once, but twice. It is time to remind folks on your state and county mailing lists about these scoundrels. It has been a couple of years since we have mentioned this. Permission is granted to pass this on. _________________________________________________________________ Help STOP SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

http://www.cyndislist.com/quaker.htm I found this information as a result of a google.com search for "Quaker Roots Genealogy List". I thought you might like to see this one. I didn't realize there were so many resources that I haven't even heard of before. A "whole big bunch" on this page alone. I had better hurry up. Tempus fugit! And so does old age! May I suggest that you might like to see all the hits from the search which I have in quotes in the first paragraph. Just go to www.google.com and type in "Quaker Roots Genealogy List" (without the quotes.) Virginia Morris Brown bvirginia76@earthlink.net
Nancy, I have one Catherine HOLT in my database. While she's not identical with your Catherine, perhaps this may help. Catherine HOLT (14 Aug 1764-13 Mar 1832) m. Jeremiah HOLT (1 Oct 1760-1 Mar 1817), son of Frank issue: Rebekah (14 Dec 1794-26 Jun 1875) m. (29 Oct 1812) cousin John HARDEN John's ma Sarah was dt of Michael HOLT Jr (1723-1799), Frank's bro. I have no Elizabeth HOLT in the relevant time frame. Unfortunately, I lost the source links transferring programs, from BrothersKeeper to Family Origins. The data may come from a Boddie publication. I have ties to the HOLT family in both Surry and Southampton Counties. Matt HARRIS

About a year ago I asked for help with my ggggrandmother , Catherine Holt. Unfortunately I still have not found her parent's names. Catherine was married to Willis Thompson on March 12, 1808. The listing that I got for this marriage in Surry County does not give parents names. In 1809, I find Elizabeth Holt marrying Hamlin Carter with Willis Thompson as witness. It's possible that Elizabeth was Catherine's sister, but I won't know until I can find the parents. Can anyone tell me anything about these names. And is it possible to get actual marriage certificates at the court house in Surry. Or do they have just the marriage registry. Any help with this would be great. Nancy
This is the URL to a very useful page of links for research. Enjoy! Virginia Morris Brown http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbags/favlinks.html
Ann, Proctor's Bridge crosses the Blackwater River on CR621; in Isle of Wight Co., that section is called Proctor's Bridge Rd. The easiest route is from Ivor (Southampton Co.), on US460; take CR616 (also called "Proctor's Bridge Rd.") north, then turn right on CR621. [It is unclear from memory or the maps I have whether that short section of CR621 is called "Proctor's Bridge Rd." or "Old Blackwater Rd."] Crossing the bridge, CR621 continues (called first Proctor's Bridge Rd, then Mill Swamp Rd, then Burwells Bay Rd), emerging on VA10 between Smithfield and the Surry Co. line. I know of no Miles Bridge or Miles Bridge Swamp. I suspect what was meant was Mill Swamp, flowing from Surry into Isle of Wight Co. "Mill Swamp is the section near the Surry County line and Proctor's Bridge. It takes it's name from an abandoned mill off what is now named White Hill Trail, formerly Highway 623, from which a large overflow came down east of Mill Swamp Church, one of the oldest Baptist churches in Virginia." (Helen Haverty King, Historical Notes on Isle of Wight County, Virginia, Isle of Wight: County Board of Supervisors, 1993.) Unfortunately, Mrs. King does not give any information on Chinkapen [Chinquapin] Neck Branch, or what might have been considered the "main road" in the period [though I would guess it's 621]. I am curious about the name of the family you are researching. Matt Harris
Searching for any information on the SUMNERs approximate dates 1790...1850, Any help appreciated. Carlton Sumner
Does anyone know the present day location described below: Isle of Wight Co., Newport Parish at Miles Bridge adjoining Blackwater Swamp, Proctor's Bridge, Chinkapen Neck Branch and Miles Bridge Swamp and the main road. This description is from a 1766 deed. If I wanted to find and visit this area today, what would be the location-towns etc. Thank you, Ann Davis
