    1. WRIGHT & GILBERT SURNAMES
    2. Diane Ethridge
    3. I am researching the above families in Surry, Sussex & Brunswick Counties, VA. Some of the WRIGHTS went over to Greene Co. OH in about 1810. Their sibling & my 4th gr grandfather, Reuben WRIGHT & w/Anna (Johanna/Ann) GILBERT & son, James, went to Henry/Wayne/Rush Cos, IN at about the same time. Reuben was a Methodist-Episcopal minister in Knightstown, IN as well as a farmer & d in 1852. I would love to find Anna's family of origin as well as more WRIGHT info & researchers. This WRIGHT family travelled the same routes as the WRIGHT Bros. family but don't think they are the same line. Thank you, Diane Ethridge

    1. THAMES surname
    2. Tony & Julie Howell
    3. hello - i am new to this list and would like to ask if anyone is researching the THAMES/THAME/TAME surname. one of our researchers on the Rootsweb THAMES surname list has found information that WILLIAM THAMES was granted a license in 1634 by King Charles I "to import tobacco from the colony of Virginia." William THAMES was born in 1584 in Dronfield, Derbyshire, England. His father's name was Henry THAME. William was a merchant in the towns of Buxton and Chapel en le Frith, England. William is said to have had two sons: Thomas, who lived in London (in Bishopsgate without the wall), and William who immigrated to Maryland in 1666, living possibly in Anne Arundel County. There are records which indicate that the William THAMES who immigrated to Maryland in 1666 had three sons - Joseph (who died in Charles Co, Md), Thomas (who is said to have lived in Md, Va, and NC, where he died) and John (who died in Queen Anne Co, Md). Many descendants of the THAMES family moved to NC, SC, GA, ALA, LA, MISS, TX, and FL. We know, however, that some THAMES-es stayed in Maryland and moved northward. Members of the Rootsweb THAMES surname list recently formed the THAMES/TIMS Family Association and we have set up a web site, www.thames-tims.org. Variations of the surname include TIMMS, TIMS, THEAMES, TIMES and others. I would love to hear from anyone who has any information on any THAMES family members. thanks, Julie Thames Howell Jacksonville, Fl

    1. Re: Executions
    2. Thanks to Nancy for the link to the ESPY Execution File- very interesting! However... The list is by no means complete. For example, there is no mention of Thomas HANSFORD [or others] ordered by Gov. BERKELEY hanged for their roles in Bacon's Rebellion. Thomas HANSFORD's sister Elizabeth married Randall HOLT Jr., of Hog Island. Matt HARRIS

    1. Executions, 1608 - 1987
    2. Nancy Brister
    3. These records begin in VA in 1608, with the execution of George Kendall for "spying/espionage" and go to 1987. To say that the early records are fascinating is an understatement (you just don't run into many executions for piracy or witchcraft anymore). But they have value for family researchers, too. Even if you don't have reason to suspect that any of your ancestors were "outlaws," there are records of executions for espionage & treason, especially important during the American Revolution and the Civil War, and there are many records of executions for "slave revolts," which might be helpful to African-American researchers. Be patient, it takes a few minutes to download and you'll need a reader, such as an Acrobat. http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/ESPYdate.pdf Nancy, researching: Baldridge, Cain, Courtney, Curtis, Carmichael, Dawkins, Doty, Garmon, Garrett, Jackson, McCormick, Matthews, Osborne, Stampley, Stringer, Warren.......and many more! 12th MS Inf; 42nd GA Inf www.geocities.com/twincousin2334 www.thepastwhispers.com

    3. These abstracts of death reports are an excellent resource. Though the newspapers are based in Tennessee, there are death notices from all over the country: Abstracts from Reported Deaths from The Nashville Christian Advocate (from mid-1800's to early 1900's); Genealogical Tidbits from The Memphis Daily Appeal during the Centennial Year of 1876. There are also miscellaneous records from Madison, Carrol, Chester, Henderson and other TN counties. THE WORKS OF JONATHAN K. T. 3. There is no professional genealogist, so far as I know, in Surry now. The Virginia Genealogical Society web site has a list of professionals from which you can choose. Most of them work primarily at the Library of VA in Richmond, which has copies of many county records. I'm sure you can find one who will travel, if that's what you want. www.vgs.org/ Best wishes, Eve S.
