Hi All! I am researching the above families in Surry during the 1600's and 1700's. Adrian Williams
I am researching the family of Surry, Warwick, and James City counties, VA. I'm not sure where my FRANCIS family originated but according to my 3-great grandfather's death certificate, he was born in James City County. I think I have found his family in Surry (Southwark Township) but there's a lot I need to verify to be sure. Here's how I see the family tree now: Henry FRANCIS (born in the late 1700s - approx 1790) married Polly or Anna. I'm taking for granted Polly and Anna are the same people. According to the census Henry's wife's name was Anna but according to the Registry of Free Negroes her name was Polly. Henry and Polly had my 3-great grandfather Elias FRANCIS (born 1825). There were numerous children. There is also another Elias FRANCIS who is approximately the same age of Henry FRANCIS so I've been taking for granted they are cousins or brothers. This Elias was married to a Parthena BANKS and some of the BANKS family lived in the household of Henry FRANCIS for a while. My 3-great grandfather left Surry to head for the North where he joined the Union Infantry during the Civil War and fought in Louisiana for the most part. I do not live close to the Surry area so I have to plan my trips. Does anyone have advice on how to research Surry documents? They don't seem very accessible. Has anyone joined the Surry Genealogical Society? What are the benefits?

I forgot to mention my Jones line as I'm not sure how it fits into Surry. My great grandmother, Mary Ethel Jones b. May 05, 1878 in Brunswich County, VA married A.W. Bohannan in 1901 in Surry County. From what I'm told, Mary Ethel was orphaned and came to live with an Aunt in Surry County. I have no idea who this aunt was or how to go about finding out. Any suggestions are welcome. I do know that Mary Ethel Jones' parents were Benjamin and Mary Jones per the marriage information at the courthouse. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elizabeth Veserat" <eveserat@tds.net> To: <VASURRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 15, 2003 5:09 PM Subject: Surry - Bohannan,Deal, Wilson, Delk, Blunt > Please contact me if you are interested in what I have on these families or > have information to share on any of them. > > I have the most on the Bohannan's and the Deal's and just a little on the > Wilson's, Delk's and Blunt's. > > Thanks. > > Elizabeth > > > ==== VASURRY Mailing List ==== > Don't forget to check out the Surry County VAGenWeb site at > http://www.rootsweb.com/~vasurry/ > List Mistress is Eve Gregory schsva2@hotmail.com > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 >
Researching the ancestors of William and Mary SIMMONS circa 1620. Simmons' Plantation is believed to be in the Surry Co state park compound. Specifically, William and son William II participated in Bacon's Rebellion that lead to the burning of Jamestown in protest against Gov Berkley oppressive taxation of property and tobacco resources. Descendents John and others appear in the roll of House of Burgess representing Surry and Isle of Wight. Further research assistance from a link in Cornwall, Dorsett and City of Birmingham, England is appreciated. Also, researching Pickett aka Piggott.
