    1. The Stories of Jessie Ruth Guffy
    2. Nancy
    3. I was first introduced to the stories of Jessie Ruth Guffy when her daughter-in-law posted one on a Rootsweb list. I wrote to Lois, asking permission to post it to another list. "Yes," came the answer, "would you like to see any of the others?" One after another, they came, each more engaging than the one before, on every subject from camp meetings to home remedies (see list below). I was thrilled when Lois said I could share them by placing them online because, though Jessie Guffy grew up in Oklahoma in the late 1800's, her stories are so similar to the ones my mother told about her parents' lives in SW MS at about the same time. These wonderful stories give a glimpse into the everyday lives of our ancestors, I believe, no matter the location, in rural America during that time. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. 1. VA Database & Maps
    2. Nancy
    3. I found a great search site, the Virginia Heritage Database. It searches the manuscript and archival collections of various Virginia institutions, from about 1607 to the present. Search page: http://ead.lib.virginia.edu/vivaead/cgi-bin/eadform.pl One of the databases that's searched is the Imagebase of the VA Tech Library: http://imagebase.lib.vt.edu/browse.php They have some wonderful collections, if you enjoy vintage photos. A good map resource I just found, Historical Maps of Virginia: http://alabamamaps.ua.edu/historicalmaps/virginia/index.html Their homepage contains links to other states, as well. I am still stuck at William Savedge who died in 1777 in Surry Co, VA. I believe his father was probably Henry but I can't prove that.....yet Audrey Orlando, FL

    3. Greetings All! The Surry County, Virginia, Historical Society is pleased to announce that Barbara Hopper's new book, Cabin Point: The Forgotten Village, will be available for purchase at our meeting on May 10, 2004. Barbara will be there to sign the books. There will be another book signing event on May 22, 2004 at the Claremont Library in Claremont. Cabin Point was once a thriving port on Upper Chippokes Creek. If you have Surry County connections, chances are good that some of them involved Cabin Point. Check the What's New page at our web site (URL below). Good Hunting! Eve S.
