This summer I will be coming from CA to VA to do research in Stafford County. I'd appreciate anyone knowledgeable on the local genealogical resources to advise me on the location of surviving old records. Are they in the courthouse, the library, local genealogical/historical society or elsewhere? I'm interested in pre-1800 to about 1815. I'm interested in Bartlett Mason; Nimrod Mason and his probable father, Lewis or Louis Mason. Lewis may be the son of John who is the son of William Mason. I have about 3 days to spend on site. I thank the list.
The web site for the Rappahannock Regional Library is www.librarypoint.org. They have their catalog on-line and for $15 (if you're not a Stafford County resident) you can join the library and get a card, which also gives you access to some more on-line databases. You'll need a card to access their Virginia research room (at least that's my understanding), but all of that information is on their web site. They have a large collection of books for Stafford, as well as many other Virginia counties, and indexes to vital records and local newspapers, as well as microfiche for the newspapers (I don't know if they go back as far as you need, though) and some census and vital records. The Stafford County courthouse http://www.co.stafford.va.us/ is also a good place, as well as the local Family History Center. Their info is 1710 Bragg Road Fredericksburg, Fredericksburg County, Virginia, United States Phone: (540) 786-5641 Hours: T, W, 10am-9pm; Th 10am-3pm; Sat 10am-3pm (3rd Sat only). http://www.familysearch.com/ If you would like maps or other info before your trip, just let me know and I can get them for you, as I live just north of Stafford. Also, the National Archives and the DAR library is only about an hour north of Stafford in DC and is a great place for research, if you have the time. Hope this helps, Hollye -----Original Message----- From: Rnzinn@aol.com [mailto:Rnzinn@aol.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 19, 2002 7:05 PM To: VASTAFFO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [VASTAFFO-L] Summer research This summer I will be coming from CA to VA to do research in Stafford County.
