I had an email questioning a surname Semmons, wanting to know if it could be Emmons. After checking the names and the handwriting, I realized the following: After comparing handwriting throughout the document I have come to the conclusion that William Semmons is William Lemmons. It looks just like a S we use today, but after looking at the L & S in the names (such as Lucy/Lemmons/Stephens and Scott) I have come to the reality that the S was really an "L". The "S" was consistent in writing as was the "L" I should have known better to check and compare the handwriting against each other. Please make the following changes in two names. Changes in Prisoners names for 1850 Census/Va. Penitentiary William Semmons White/1850/22 Should be William Lemmons S. Brooks White/1848/46 Should be L. Brooks June
