Believe it or not, it was not uncommon for landowners to own land in more than one county or colonial state. Especially the wealthier ones-and many crossed the river from MD and VA back and forth (and some land was in VA colony one year and MD the next, and then back again as they fought out land disputes.) People still tended to congregate among those with like religions. After problems with the Anglicans in MD, many relocated to the Northern Neck area of VA (part of which became Stafford Co) when the Brent's, along with another family group, bought up a bunch of land for 'Catholic' settlement. This was by no means the only case. Remember, Giles Brent moved up to this area after he grew out of favor for trying to claim Indian inheritance of lands owned by his former father-in-law. Anyway-many were surprising mobile around the colonies, not to mention back to England or the West Indies and back. Which Margaret Beall did he marry? Who were his parents? Va. Hello List I have been confused by the where abouts of BENJAMIN EDWARDS b. 1752 in Stafford Co. My confusion results from his presence in St. Mary's Co. Maryland during the Revolutionary War. He is listed as a Second Lieutenant in the service of Maryland, is surrounded by my Edwards family of Maryland, serving with them and taking his Maryland Oath of Allegiance in front of Henry Tubbman in 1778 in St. Mary's Co.He married Margaret Beall of Maryland and removed to Ky. He is the brother of Haden Edwards of Stafford. Both are listed as Veterans of Stafford Co. doing Public Service. If anyone can explain his presence in two places or has any information regarding this son of Stafford Co. and his activity during the Revolution, it would be greatly appreciated.
