Looking for MORTON researchers in Stafford County. -- James P. "Jim" Lynch jplynch@crosslink.net
Thanks and Happy Hunting. Linda
I am a beginner at Stafford, following the Bells and Adie families, ancestors of my great great grandmother, Sally Fendall Bell Milstead. One of her children was J. Shelton Milstead, and I know my late aunt looked with unsuccessful results for a long time for the source of the Sheltons, here used as a middle name from an ancestor's last name. I have not found the Trammells or Williams, but will know to look for them. I used the county material on microfilm at the RELIC genealogy library at Manassass VA in Prince William Co. The only problem is that about half of it is lost. I will check on both names next time I go there. Regards, Charlie

Linda, At the present time, I can find no direct line to Jim, but it is being constantly researched. My Bowie side came from Charles County, Md. and Jim's side came from Prince Georges County Md. But I have a few cousins and others who are continually looking for links, but as of yet there are no relationship to be found. Both of these sets of Bowie's came from Scotland, but different areas. The PG County Bowie's are from the lowlands, and the Charles County Bowie's are from the highlands. That probably says why I love the mountains. With best regards, Troy W. Are you related to the Bowie who invented the knife and died at the Alamo? My Trammell ancestors came from England to Stafford Co, Va 1670. Intermarried with Daniel Boone family and followed him to KY. Burke Trammell died at the Alamo. Any info appreciated. Thanks, Linda
Dear Mr. McNett: Do you have any information on the Trammells of Stafford Co. VA or the Williams? I know that John Williams with Dau Mary Alice m Thomas Trammell came to colonies about 1670. Thomas was an indentured servant to Mr Frances Wyeth and he had to go to court to get his release. John Williams left land to John Trammell. After that I know a lot about the Trammells, but nothing about the Williams family. I also think that the people who have done the research I have read have lost a generation of Trammells. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. God Bless You, Linda
John Williams was my first Williams ancestor in colonies. Came in 1670 his dau m Thomas Trammell in England. They had a son John Trammell who suppossedly inherited land from John Williams. Is there a record of this? I also read on the net that there was a law in VA that children named after relatives inherited from them. Do you know anything about that? Any information appreciated. Thanks. Linda I know all about the Trammells, but I don't know much about the Williams, though there are a lot of inter-marriages between these families and they seem to have followed the same migration patterns. My next known connection in my direct line, Nat Williams m Fanny Snodgrass in Tn came to Navarro Co, TX by 1820. Their daughter Margaret Lucretia m Jonathan Franklin Trammell. These are my gggrandparents. God bless you, for your thoughtfulness and time. Linda
Are there any Boatrights listed or connected with the Allens? I am a Boatright descendant and heard that they were (the Allens) members of the kings guard and not allowed to have any personal life. Several Allen brothers escaped to colonies and changed their names to Boatright, but kept Allen in their given names. Have you heard any of this? God Bless, Linda
I think I've said this before, but it bears repeating. I am impressed by what Mary Washington College is doing to put historical information online for people to search -- for free. Fredericksburg is right next to Stafford County, and Falmouth is in Stafford County. If you had relatives in Stafford County in 1889, it is worth checking the Chataigne's Fredericksburg and Falmouth City Directories 1888-1889 that are online at http://departments.mwc.edu/hipr/www/fredericksburg/1889directory.htm There are other useful things to search at the main site Fredericksburg Research Resources http://departments.mwc.edu/hipr/www/fredburg.htm

I do not have much to add to what Donna wrote about James J. TOLSON, but I do have some information about his wives. His first wife was Mary E. KEYS, daughter of William KEYS. I do not know whether his 2nd wife, Annie E., was her sister. As you will see below, there is a problem with this. Alice Virginia KEYS and Annie E. KEYS were daughters of William C. KEYS and his wife Verenia. In the 1860 census of Dumfries District, Prince William County, Virginia, William C. Keys (22) is a farmer with $170 in personal property. Verenia is 27. Mary E. Keys is 2 and Harriet Keys is one month old. The 1870 census of Prince William County lists William C. Keys (34) as a farm laborer. "Salina F. Keys" (27) was keeping house and raising the children: Marietta (13), Harriett (10), Wallace (8), Ann Eliz. (4), and Alice (3). The 1880 census of Prince William County shows the girls as Annie Keys (14) and Alice Va. Keys (12). I do not have marriage information for Ann Elizabeth and Alice. Alice died before 1910, when the wife listed with James J. Tolson in the 1910 census is Annie E., and she has 4 children under the age of 8. PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VIRGINIA, BIRTHS, 1912-1917 by Ronald Ray Turner lists Alma Lucile Tolson, born 30 July 1912 in Coles District, Prince William County; father was James J. Tolson (43, a farmer, born in Prince William) and mother was Elizabeth A. (Keys) Tolson (36, born in Prince William); seventh child, six living. NOTE: This information indicates that Elizabeth A. was born in 1875-1876, a full decade after the Anne E. who was a child of William C. KEYS. Can anyone out there straighten this out? I have been in contact with Bill Deyo and he has helped so much.I've got the Sullivan side almost complete back to Darby Sullivan and some Newtons,Williams, and Bowies.I did find out that my ggranpa Basil died in 1898 from typhoid fever at age 20 and was survived by his wife and son-my granpa,Hugh.I am still looking for the rest :) As for Shelton Shop Road,I used to live at Randall's Store on the corner of Shelton Shop and Mountain View when it still Rural Route 1,it changed to Shelton Shop after we moved in 1983.I always take the conceited view that it was named after us :) I religiously check out the MWC site to see if anything has changed but so far not.I used it when I went to the library's Virginiana room for the first time yesterday--awesome collection they got going on there.I will be back there as soon as possible. Thanks for all the help and please keep it coming!!!! I'm a newbie at this but am catching on quick

Hi, Just saw the story on the Aquia Church and thanks for the imformation. My grandparents and Uncles are buried there. My grandmother had told me that each box after the war was a signed to each family attending the church. My grandparents had the front boxes when they were living. When I first went there was for my grandfathers funeral and I was impressed with the sermon box. It stands to a second story and when the minister was talking you felt as if he could see right through you. If you would like more imformation on the church it has a URL. It is www.aquiachurch.com It tells of the going ons, pictures of the church and the insides, and the graveyard and who is buried there. But it has not been updated on the graveyard since 1998. Hope this helps. Cathy
