I don't know what Shelton family you are researching but a lot of Shelton's located from Virginia in Southern Ohio. Adams and Brown Counties. Also, across the river in Mason Co. KY. I'm not researching Shelton but have run into the name often.
Debbie, If it is possible that the Shelton name and the Skelton name are related, there is a book that is quite accurate in covering the Skelton line from 1629 in VA to TX descendants still living there. The book is "Rogers-Skelton and Allied Families" by Helen Rogers Skelton and Clarence Skelton. Hope this helps, Bill in Orlando
As far as I know, this is my line : My daddy-Gene Francis Shelton [17sept1927-5june1983]m Jo Ann Keller granpa-Hugh Calvin Shelton [1jan1894-29aug1934]m Mary Sullivan[who remarried to Bolie Hartley] ggranpa-Basil Shelton [1878-1898]m Mary Elizabeth Shelton[who remarried to Frank Bowie] gggranpa-George Wellington Shelton m Mariah Perry ggggranpa-George Gustavus Shelton m Lucinda Pates gggggrandpa Edward Shelton m Nancy[Ann] UNKNOWN[Stafford Co constable] ggggggranpa William Shelton Jr m Margaret Nelson gggggggranpa William Shelton Sr m Abigal Grey[Gray] This info was given to me by Bill Deyo in Colonial Beach who is related thru both the Shelton and Sullivan sides.I have only been able to document as far back as Basil.I showed this list to my Aunt Jane Thompson[daddy's sister] and she said it was correct. All these men lived and died in Stafford County. Its like the ark stopped on the Rappahanock River in Fredericksburg and the Sheltons and Sullivans got off and started to multiply! I did hear from someone that a Shelton did escape Stafford County :) and moved west but he was a gg [or more g's] uncle to me.I would appreciate dates to go along with these names if you know them and any other info you can give. Thanks again, Debbi Shelton
I have seen Knorr's pub. It is available at the Mary Washington College Library here in Fredericksburg. I have found errors in it, but it's a good source. I think it was based largely on the work of the church's own 1892 study of the cemetery and a 1940s look by Professor Carroll Quenzel (also of MWC) who wrote a history of the church. His work is out of print, but a copy is available (not for interlibrary loan) at the Central Rappahannock Regional Library in Fredericksburg. What none of them did was include a map which I have done. This helps as some of the stones are totally unrecognizable due to being 200 years old. Trip Wiggins Fredericksburg, VA
Are you related to Jim Tackett who resided in Kansas and married a person named Helen...I think her maiden name was Reiner : SHe grew up in Montana and Idaha and she is descended from a Bachman WOman named Louise Bachman who married Joe REiner. Helen was my mom's first cousin. alyce hart Jim W. Tackitt, Pres./Editor wrote: > A transcription of St. George's Episcopal Church Cemetery records is available in Catherine L. Hello, I am looking for information on a Beulah M. Dickerson from Stafford Co., Virginia from at least 1925. Beulah either married William Thomas Dickerson or just dated him and they had a child together. William Thomas Dickerson Jr. was born in April of 1926, and William Dickerson Sr.'s family raised Jr. On the birth certificate is list parents as Beulah M. and William T. Dickerson. In what I have been told, there was 2 Dickerson clans in Stafford at the time and Beulah was from the other clan and the 2 families where not related. And the 2 Dickerson families did not speak or anything else. Billy ( William Jr. ) passed away on December 22, 1999. The family from the beginning was not aloud to talk about this or bring up Beulah's name. We don't care about the skeletons in the closet, but would like to shed some light on things to have some close sure for the rest of the family. ANY information would be great. I need a will for JOHN COLCLOUGH who died in Stafford Co., VA on 19 Sep 1717. Where/who would I write to obtain a copy of this document? All suggestions appreciated. Julie
I found a marriage record of John Coakley and Elizabeth Thomas on November 23, 1836 (Fredericksburg Marriage). In 1732 Fredericksburg was designated the site of the court of Spotsylvania County. June
Not sure it is the same, but looks like it might be. I am finishing up transcribing the cemetery at St George's Episcopal church in Fredericksburg (just across the river from Stafford Co.) and lo and behold we have the graves of John and Elizabeth Coakley. He was born in 1805 and she ca. 1810, which matches your people's ages. The Mary could have been a daughter of John and Mary Coakley (perhaps John's first wife?) The info on each are as follows: Entered into Rest JOHN COAKLEY Born Feb. 14, 1805 Died July 2, 1874 Sacred to the Memory OF ELIZABETH COAKLEY Relict of JOHN COAKLEY DIED March 11, 1890 Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God (A survey of the cemetery done in 1892 says she was 80 when she died.) Other Coakley's in the cemetery include: In Memory of JOHN son of John & Mary Coakley Who departed this life July 21st 1795 Aged 3 Years and 1 Month Sacred to the Memory of MARY daughter of John & Mary Coakley Who departed this life June the 7, 1867 In the 28 year of her age In Memory of CATHERINE The daughter of John and Mary Coakley Who departed this life August 24, 1811 Aged 8 years and 2 months By the way, the church has no further records on these people. Perhaps the local newspaper ran an obit on John and or Eliz, but I haven't had time to check. Trip Wiggins Fredericksburg, VA
I'm looking for any info that will help this African-American lady find her ancestry. It is believed that she is a Fitzhugh descendant. ---------------------------------------------- The name of the plantation is Greenwood and the plantation owner was Gideon Brown. I learned more about him through the Rappahannock Library and a book I received about the Rappahannock area. We were allowed to visit the plantation out of the kindness of the current owners and inhabitants. Now, I need to find the records of Gideon Brown (i.e. will, record of slave sales/purchase, etc.). I believe he was there in 1850 until his death in the late 1800's. His farm remained in the family until recent times. His niece who married a gentleman with the last name of Miller inherited the property. I understand descendants of his niece still live in the area. --------------------------------------------- Any help or hints will be greatly appreciated! Charleen
This is just a thought...there were Colclough families in Stafford Co., Va in the 1700s and I understand that the surname is pronounced COKELY / COAKLEY. Could your John and Daniel be of the Colclough family that I am working on? In records from England there is a reference to this family being in the china business and producing Colclough China.
