Hello Several of you have mentioned the book __Stafford Co. Will Abstracts 1729-1748._ Is this book for sale? Where? Price? Thanks. Judy
Can anyone suggest how to find the marriage record for my Joseph Bolen/Bolden/Bolling to Julia ____ bef 1776. Joseph fought in the revolution from VA but may or may not haver been married here. Many thanks for any suggestions. Dennis McCormick
Just a reminder that there are useful Stafford County resources online. http://cyndislist.com/va.htm is for all Virginia http://www.cyndislist.com/va-local.htm has links to each county and many cities or towns in Virginia http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/va/stafford.htm has a few Stafford County records and welcomes more http://www.rootsweb.com/~vastaffo/ is the Rootsweb site http://us-gen.com/va/stafford/census/ is the specific address for Censuses of Stafford County, transcribed by Carl & Mildred Musselman and prepared for the web by Kristy Williams (genealogy saints, all three!). Searchable page by page or by surname. Also remember: Many records of Stafford people will be found in Fredericksburg, and a good number of Stafford Countians went to Washington, DC, or southern Maryland to get married. Some of them died in Staunton or Charlottesville, in the hospitals there. I am trying to identify the two J. Heflin names on an 1864 Confederate Map of Stafford Co., VA. The names are on a line due West of Garrison, Stafford Co. to the Fauquier Co. border. A lot of people who lived in Stafford Co. near the Fauquier line attended church at the Grove Baptist Church (Fauquier) and the Rock Hill Baptist Church (Stafford). If anyone can help, it would be appreciated. Thanks Phyllis. I believe the most likely candidates are: James Edwin Hefflin b 1823, m 1848 Susan Patterson, s/o James Hefferlin & Mary Anna Walker. James Edwin Heflin and his wife Susan raised the infant daughter, Sally, of his brother Absolom whose second wife died and left him with two small children. James bought a lot in Falmouth, Stafford Co., in 1871. He released the rights to the store house lot in Falmouth in 1877. In the 1860 Census for Stafford Courthouse, Stafford Co., VA James Heflin (40), farmer, owned 100 acres, was living with his wife Susan (40) and Sally (8), daughter of Absolom Heflin. A Lucy Jones (17) is also living with him. John E. Heflin b 1809 Stafford Co., m 1839 Lucretia Courtney, s/o James Hefferlin & Mary Anna Walker. On the marriage document it states that Lucretia Courtney is the daughter of Alces (Alice Ennis) and the ward of Alexander (John E. Heflin's uncle). John Hefflin and Alexander Courtney were bondsmen. Lucretia died 1893 and was removed from the roles of the Grove Baptist Church. The Grove Baptist Church is located in the lower part of Fauquier Co., VA, near Somerville, Elk Run, and Morrisville. There is more information on the Grove Baptist Church relative to Baptisms, Admission, Death, Dismissal, Exclusion, Membership Roles in the NGS Library in Washington, DC. James Lee Heflin b ca 1825, m ca 1846 Elizabeth Bowling, s/o William Strother Hefling Sr. In the 1860 Stafford Courthouse, Stafford Co., VA James L. Heflin (33), farmer, was living with his wife Elizabeth M. (35) and their children Warren O. (12), James Thomas (8), Benton (6), and James (Could this be Alexander S.?). James L. Heflin Sr. was drafted 10 April 1862, served in Confederate Company "B", 47th Virginia Infantry, Discharged 29 April 1862 due to disability. Had light complexion, light hair, and was 6'2" tall. Jefferson W. Heflin b 1810, m Julia A. Templeman, s/o William Hefflinger & Margaret. William Heflin estate division of lands in Stafford Co. sold with proceeds to James L. Heflin and Charles S. Heflin. William's wife was Elizabeth. Is this William Hefflinger aka William Strother Hefling Sr.? John E. Heflin b 1813 Stafford Co., m ca 1839 Ann Delia Heflin, s/o William Hefflinger & Margaret. In the 1860 Census for Stafford Courthouse, Stafford Co., VA John E. Heflin (44), farmer, was living with his wife Ann Heflin (44) and their children William H. (19), farmer, Ann M. (15), Fanny (12), Emma (10), and Lydia (8). In the 1870 Census for Rockhill Township, Stafford Co., VA John E. Heflin (54) is listed with his wife Ann D. (54) and their children Fannie R. (22), Lidia E. (16), and James W. (9). James L. Heflin b ca 1827, m Susan F., s/o William Hefflinger & Margaret. In the 1870 Census for Falmouth Twp., Stafford Co., VA James Heflin (48) is living with his wife Susan F. (45). Also, living in the household are Sarah S. Leitch 18,(domestic servant), William Connor 16, (farm labourer), and Susan Ella Leitch (2) d/o Sarah S. Leitch. Wesley Jefferson Heflin b 1836, m Martha Ann Humphrey. In the 1860 Census for Stafford Courthouse, Stafford Co., VA Wesley (24), laborer was living with his wife Martha (21) and their daughter Marian A. (5/12). In 1880 census for Rochill, Stafford Co., VA Wesley J. Heflin (44) is listed with his wife Martha A. (41), and their children Annie (18) and Fanny L. (15).
Re: Doniphan Finding the origins of early immigrants to Virginia is quite difficult. Some books have been published, mostly about people from Pennsylvania (of course) and from Maryland, many of whom were convicts. However, I called up the URL for the LDS family history catalog and note that two family histories have been published (at least) which include a Doniphan family, and both have been filmed. Suggest you search www.familysearch.org You can order these films to your local LDS family history center. But be warned, it takes time to read most microfilms, so don't order too many at once, especially if your research time (microfilm reading time) is limited. The Catalog link is on the lower right side. Click on it, type in surname, and see what comes up. Some researchers like to use the IGI (International Genealogical Index) and the Ancestral File. With these, use caution: Garbage in, garbage out, as we used to say in the early days of personal computers. There are MANY errors. Other professionals use PERSI which is an index to articles in genealogical journals held by the Allen Co. Indiana (Ft. Wayne) Public Library. I do NOT think this valuable index is online. I bought a CD-ROM (updated annually) from ancestry.com for about $100 when it first came out. Updates are not as costly after your initial investment. However, if you are near a large genealogical library, they probably have several volumes of these indexes. There is a trick to using them, and that is why a CD-ROM is useful---because of the search abilities. For instance, if you are researching Stafford Co., then you search for the county. If you are researching the surname Doniphan, then you seach for that surname, etc. As an aside, please, listers, I DO NOT do look-ups. I am elderly, have bad eyes, and need to complete my own family histories (on which I have been working for over 20 years, thanks to computers!) Tell Santa you want a CD_ROM for Christmas. It may save you years of research work. E.W.Wallace
Anyone have information relating to the origins of Alexander DONIPHAN, who was b.c. 1653 and d. 1717 in Stafford Co. VA? Thanks, -- Larry D. Hamilton Coats P.O. Box 823 Aspermont, TX 79502

Hi Phyllis, What a find! Do you think that M. Heflin could be Marshall Heflin? I guess without a first name listed, it would be purely conjecture, but I don't think there were a lot of Heflin's whose names began with an 'M' at that time. Thanks for sharing this with us. I am looking for the marriage of John Rogers and Susannah Smith. They married between 1775 and 1790. Does anyone know of a source of these records? Thanks Bill in Orlando
I recently purchased a Confederate Map for Stafford Co., VA completed on 31 October 1864 that is quite unusual in that it has peoples names placed upon it in locations where they were located at that time. I was particularly interested in a location identified on Eugene Scheels map as Heflin that appears to be about 4 miles from the Fauquier Co., VA on a direct line East to Aquia, Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co., VA. On a road identified as Poplar Road that runs from Warrenton Road, South of Hartwood, on North Northwest to the Fauquier Co., VA border I find the following Surnames: J. Heflin M. Heflin ----Kearnes Mrs. Kearney Further East I find the following Surnames: J. Heflin J. Hickerson J. Jones ------Fritter Pritenett English Mrs Butey Rudey or Radey Mrs. Butey Mrs. Turner Maddox S. Harding W. T. Patton J. M. Moore W. Honey W. Masters T. T. Fritter -----Moore F. Curtis Ludwell A. Jones B. Embrey C. Cooper Dr. Stone Mountjoy Walter These names are between what was described as Heflin (Scheels map) and East to Ebenezer Church and Garrisonville. These are North of Acquia Road. If anyone can identify any of these families in this area in the time frame of the Civil War I would appreciate any input. I am primarily interested in the Heflin Surname and any of the surnames that intermarried into the Heflins. There are many other names on the map and if anyone is interested in a particular name, I would be happy to look it up for you if you can give me an approximate location in Stafford where I might find the name. Regards, Phyllis.
Just wanted to say hello to all on the list and add my information. My line is through Alexander Brown and Catherine Dunnington. Their Son was my GGGrandfather, Richard Brown. Richard married Julia Jane Reed in Mercer County, WV. in 1882. Can anyone tell me if Alexander and Catherine had a Son named Marshall Brown? Thanks and good luck to all! Jessie Jessie557@aol.com
Does anyone have a list of ministers, their locations, and denominations? I believe it could be a useful tool in locating where ancestors lived by noting where the ministers who performed the marriages were. One such minister that someone could help me with is John L. Carroll of Fauquier Co. in the 1876 time frame. I visited the Baptist Church Archives on the University of Richmond last week and found a wealth of information. You should make an appointment (Miss Darlene F. Slater 1-804-289-8434) prior to your visit. That way they will retrieve the info you request and have it ready when you get there. Regards, Phyllis.
The url is www.rootsweb.com. The mapping of the New Hope Church (no "Methodist" in the title)cemetery was done without any prior knowledge of the other sources you mention. The mapping must be done from the tombstone and that is what I did. I would think that my mapping would be more up-to-date than the other sources, but I don't know. nh --- "Jim W.
