The 1737 Brent Town Tract map of Prince Wm. Co. [a redrawn map from the original, which I sell] shows the homesites of those you note above: Mason, Norman, Reno, Tacquett &Wigginton ? among 32 others. I also have a plat map for sale showing the parcels of a few of these, as drawn by the late Wm. Lawson Reno Jr. I have no knowledge of any of the Tacquett [aka Tackett/Tackitt] family members being on Aquia [in Stafford Co.] before about 1800 [the 3rd generation after the immigrant, Lewis Tacquett.]. It is possible, though, that William Tackett, c1722-1783, had acquired some land on Aquia prior to 1800. Jim W. 3. Does anyone know if there are any maps showing the land ownership in the Aquia Creek area of Stafford in the late 17th and early to mid-eighteenth centuries? I know that land changed ownership often, and that may be difficult. I'm interested in the land locations on Aquia, on both the north and the south sides. Families I'm interested in are: Mason, Butler, Matheny, Allen, Whitson, Reno, Taquett, Wiggington, Norman, Nelson, Beach, Brent. Thanks.

    3. I do not believe that the Thomas Porter b 1734 and married Sarah Weaver was from the Thomas Porter-Ann Calvert Line. I believe, but do not have full proof, that the Thomas Porter b 1734 came from a different Porter line. There were several others in that area of VA at the same time. The Thomas Porter b 1734 had a son named Edwin who had a son name William-these are not given names in the Porter-Calvert downline or upline. Not proof, but nothing on this other Porter line seems to match other than near proximity. Dick Eastman has given written permission, as stated above, to share with you genealogists--and history buffs, I presume. E.W.Wallace) - Court Papers, Lost During Civil War, Show Up on eBay When Union troops raided the Brentsville Courthouse during their occupation of Prince William County, Virginia in 1863, they made off with batches of court papers from the Revolutionary War era as part of their spoils. The vital records -- including oaths of soldiers, certificates of birth and death, and deeds of property and business ownership -- tore a hole in the county's history and were considered lost forever. Many genealogists would like to obtain some information from those "missing" papers that date back to May 1779. Now they may soon have the chance. Virginia historians and Prince William officials have recovered some of the documents because a researcher noticed just a few of the pages for sale on eBay. The Library of Virginia in Richmond contacted the dealer, Charles Barger, of Mansfield, Ohio, to see if he had more. The state then bought a 200-page record book for $8,000 from Barger, who had extolled the "beautiful handwriting" and "excellent condition" of the documents, according to the official auction listing. The entire story is rather long and very interesting. You can read the full article in The Washington Post's online Web site. Item. Whatsoever lands, tenements, or plantations belonged to me in Virginia, or what rights or pretensions I may have to any lands in England or the province of Maryland, I give to my son Wm. and his heirs forever. And for what personal estate God almighty hath been graciously pleased to endow me with, I give and bequeath as followeth: Item. I give to my dear and beloved wife seven Negroes (to say) Harry & his wife Katherine, Kate, Will and his wife Peggy, Hanna & her youngest child to her & her dispose forever but still with this intercession & request to my dust in the ground either when she dies or before a second marriage, that she would secure the three youngest of the said Negroes to my three youngest children or to which of them best pleaseth her by their dutifulness & obedience to them & their heirs. Fitzhugh 8 Negroes, to say Giles & his wife & son’s children, to say Susan, Ned, Giles, & Joe, Tomlin, & Peter, and a ninth I give, mulatto Betty to have & to hold to him & his heirs forever.

    3. Thanks June, Most of these are distant cousins. Carter Granville Heflin (m Alice Harriett Grimsley) and George Washington Heflin (m Miriam Courtney) are brothers to my James Hefferlin (m Mary Anna Walker). They were sons of John Hefferlin Sr. VA Revolutionary War Soldier who enlisted in Stafford Co., VA in Dec. 1776. Phyllis Cpzb4@aol.com wrote: > Charles G. 1. [VASTAFFO-L] Heflin Material
    2. Just to join in the conversation (you know how genealogists like to eavesdrop--that's how we find cousins!): I checked the LDS website at www.familysearch.org The link to the FHLC (fam hist library catalog) is on the lower right I typed in the surname Heflin and came up with a listing of 27 items held by the FHL in Salt Lake City. (Try this with your uncommon surnames--*Williams* or *Smith* may clog the system.) When researching a rather uncommon name (few of them in my family), I like to begin with the FHLC and then turn to PERSI, a database compiled by the Allen County [IN] Public Library of the genealogical journal articles held by that organization. The PERSI is not online. Many genealogical libraries have it on microfiche, and Ancestry.com, I believe, still sells the updated versions for approximately $100 (at least that's what I got for Christmas one year). Good luck to researchers. Always start with a survey of the literature, as my research prof hammered in my head!!! By the way, if you want to know what may be available on film or in book form on Stafford Co., FHLC is a good place to start. Try clicking on Place instead of Surname. Salt Lake City doesn't have everything, but it's trying HARD. That is why so many of us make week-long (two weeks is better) pilgrimages there--trying to learn the ropes ahead of time. Otherwise, you are overwhelmed with the vast collections. E.W.Wallace

    1. [VASTAFFO-L] Heflin Research
    2. Jim W. Tackitt, Pres./Editor
    3. Heflin Researchers: Can I assume that you all are aware of the work on this surname conducted by DON HEFLIN of Vallejo, CA > Georgetown, KY and >Naples, FL? I guess he worked on this for close to 30 years . . . . . . . and as also collected by Hilton Heflin of Columbia, SC? I've seen Hilton's posts on this list [I think] and I haven't heard from Don Heflin in a couple of years and don't think he is now active in this quest. I know that he did publish a fair amount on this surname out of the Stafford Co. area. I am not a HEFLIN researcher but I do have a lot of material which includes numerous old letters and invoices, etc., from the early 1900's - which doesn't help any with those "old" lines, but interesting to look at. Also on hand is a notebook of material, much of which is from the father of Hilton Heflin, Ryland Heflin, and was copied for me by the late Stafford researcher, A. Maxim Coppage, who also had some interest in this family. Sorry that this material is all in a loose leaf unindexed format. I'll eventually give all this material, including my Stafford/Prince Wm. collection on dozens of surnames, to one of the libraries in the area - haven't made up my mind which one yet. Jim W.
