    3. Hi Jeanette, I think they crossed the river more the we are accustomed to accounting for. What seems odd to me is that he joins in Maryland in 1778 and lives in Va until 1780. There are a lot of holes here. 3. Hello Greg, You may find that he was a Constable ,or tied in with the courthouse somehow ,in Virginia and could not live in Maryland as an address, the same as today. But we can join the war anywhere, esp. in the early days. 3. I presumed the Haden was really Hayden Edwards, since Hayden was a common surname among the Catholic crowd in MD. I find a genealogy in www.familysearch.com , AFN:G7FV-KS- which says these two were the sons of Hayden Edwards and Penelope Sanford. Hayden was the son of William Edwards and Mary Nicholson Hayden. I would not be surprised to find that this family was Catholic-especially since Hayden died in Bourbon, KY in 1803-looks suspiciously like they joined the Maryland Palatinate. 3. Believe it or not, it was not uncommon for landowners to own land in more than one county or colonial state. Especially the wealthier ones-and many crossed the river from MD and VA back and forth (and some land was in VA colony one year and MD the next, and then back again as they fought out land disputes.) People still tended to congregate among those with like religions. After problems with the Anglicans in MD, many relocated to the Northern Neck area of VA (part of which became Stafford Co) when the Brent's, along with another family group, bought up a bunch of land for 'Catholic' settlement. This was by no means the only case. Remember, Giles Brent moved up to this area after he grew out of favor for trying to claim Indian inheritance of lands owned by his former father-in-law. Anyway-many were surprising mobile around the colonies, not to mention back to England or the West Indies and back. Which Margaret Beall did he marry? Who were his parents? 3. I have hesitated to reply, since I do not know the answer to the question asked, but I can recommend the resources at Stafford County's genweb site. A large portion of the Stafford County censuses is online at http://us-gen.com/va/stafford/census/ and there is much helpful information at the main genweb site http://www.rootsweb.com/~vastaffo/ I will keep your query in mind, Ministers can be hard to track. So many of them (except the Baptists!) were regularly moved by their denominations. AUGUST and AUGUSH are not familiar surnames, although I think there may be one that starts with AN-, like ANGUIST or ANGUISH (???). Laura

    2. Hello Listers, The marriage license for my great-greats, dated Sept. 7, 1857, was signed by a minister that appears to be P. Y. AUGUST or Augush. A notice in the Fredericksburg News states that they were married in Stafford County. Would anyone out there know with what church this minister might have been affiliated? I'll even take educated guesses. Thanks, Becky Researching Gosnell/Bozel/Collins in Stafford/Fredericksburg circa 1860

In a nutshell, mine is Josias Stone, 1725-1790 Valentine Stone, 1750-1822 Robert Stone, 1778-1838 (relocated to Bath County, KY) Richard Stone, 1814-1882 (relocated to Kansas) Joseph Stone, 1845-1897 Archie Earl Stone, 1891-1938 (relocated to Missouri) Archie Edwin Stone, 1924-2000 (relocated to California) Archie is clearly a family name, my son is also named Archie. I'm not sure if the name Archie was from Richard's wife's (Minerva Jane Kincaid) family or if it was taken from your side of the family. Kim Stone

    2. I don't know the answer to your question about landowners on Acquia Creek. What time period. The Antient Press (Ruth and Sam Sparacio) have abstracted/transcribed many early records of Stafford Co. and from those you can get an idea of who owned what. Website: antientpress.com John Simpson the Scotsman owned land on Acquia Creek in the late 1600s. I cannot tell you the exact date. Hope you can access the Stafford Co. records done by the Sparacios. Also for a later period I believe Richard Slatten (Iberian Press) did some landowner lists. Check the family history library catalog on www.familysearch.org Gertrude E. Gray has done four books of Northern Neck land grants, but the creeks and other watercourses are NOT indexed. These books are sold by Genealogical Publishing Co. Peggy Shomo Joyner has abstracted some warrants and surveys (which precede the land grants) for Northern Neck--many volumes. Either type in Slatten's name as author (also Gray and Joyner), or type in Stafford Co. and then look for land records. At least you will know such publications exist, even if they are not in a genealogical library near you. E.W.Wallace southern California

    3. I am interested in information on the persons as relates to the land transaction mentione below in 1751 and specifically to my gggg grandfather Andrew CADDEL: This is the earliest info on Andrew: 1751 - April 2, Andrew CADDLE witness land transaction, John Tyre of Albermarle County, VA to John Williamson of Spotsylvania County, VA, at £16 current for 100 acres in St George Parish, Spotsylvania County. Witness: Robert Huddleston, William Mathews, Andrew CADDLE, Edward Land. County records, volume 1, page 184. By 1754 he was in Orange Co., NC. 1754 - 30 Jan. Andrew CADDEL did John Lea survey, Orange County, NC. He was listed as a SCC (Sword Chain Carrier) And worked for surveyors Major Lea and William Churton. >From family lore, Andrew (a Scottish Immigrant) came to America at the age of 14 as a stowaway on a ship from Edinburgh, SCT. He was indentured for a period of time. It is said that he was well educated and made a clerk on a HENDERSON plantation, and later married the owner's daughter, Jean HENDERSON in abt 1765. I have documentation of Andrew's grandson, Lewis Green CADDEL, who said his grandmother was a Jean HENDERSON. I also have a deed dated 18 Aug 1768 signed by Andrew CADDEL and Jean CADDEL, where they sold land in Orange Co., NC. In 1754 Orange Co., NC, Andrew was closely associated with the LEA family. Andrew CADDEL and Major LEA did surveys in Orange Co., NC for at least nine years. I have info from a direct descendant of Major LEA. She stated the John listed above was Major's father. John LEA was from England and his son Major LEA was born in Spotsylvania County. It is know that HENDERSONs also lived in Spotsylvania County and vicinity. I also found an earlier record in nearby Stafford Co., VA: 1666 - 29 August, John CADDELL, Stafford County, VA, certificates for land giving headrights, 1st part, 1st order book - to Henry Hudson for 40 persons, including CADDELL. I have no other records on this John CADDELL or any others in Virginia prior to the 1750s, except 1704 - Richard CODELL, rent rolls, 100 acres, Charles City County, VA.
