Hello, Can anyone tell me if they know of a marriage between Susan B. BRIDGES & John COAKLEY? The time frame would have been between 1850 & 1868. Thanks for any help. Anne W. Bradshaw Musser

I also need the rest of James Richard's siblings. Carol Mauzy Dear Carol: I cannot help you with your genealogy, except to note that one of the many Kempers (of the first Germanna Colony in Virginia) intermarried with a Mauzy, and I believe most of those folks were of Fauquier Co., VA, previously of Prince Williams Co. until they died off or migrated to Kentucky. A few stayed (the Kempers, that is) and one became a Governor. You do mention that some of your Mauzys were in West Virginia. I do not do West Virginia research, as by the time West Virginia came around, my folks had all headed west (or had died in VA or KY or NC or SC or GA--you get the picture). I am told that many early West Virginians appear in Augusta Co., VA records, which at one time was a HUGE county. A good beginning (and a quick one for you, possibly) are the three volumes of Lyman Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia. Some kind persons have put this online. That's the good news. Here is the URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/instruct.htm The bad news is there is no search engine--which is planned for the future. If you read the instructions on the webpage, carefully, however, you will see that each volume contains an index for that volume. Read the arrows carefully. The one on the far right, I think, will get you to the index for that volume. In Volume one, I did not see a Mauzy, but I saw a Mayse or Mayze. Could it be? As the title implies, there are a goodly number of Scots-Irish surnames (from Pennsylvania) who appear in this work. Some criticize Chalkley for being selective, but, hey, three volumes of works of any county is impressive, I think! Any record is hit or miss--even the original records, such as censuses, deeds, etc. May you have luck finding your Mauzys and associated families. These records are probably too early to find the exact persons you are looking for, but my feeling, we don't necessarily waste time by familiarizing ourselves with what is available for genealogists, and Chalkley fits the bill for West Virginians. Hi to the list and many thanks for quick answer. I suspected as much when the beginning of the reel # 3 for Deeds Libre LL began with a note that "pages were destroyed during war" So, I used the Land Tax Records and was successful in tracking my guy and documenting he was the same James CAVE who moved to Alabama around 1838. The Land Tax Books for 1834 - 1850 gave me more clues...some of which were not legible...so I submit these to y'all again for assistance. 1. 1837 James CAVES, whose residence in then Alabama, is shown owning 214 acres, description is "Hartwood". Explanation column is not clear, but this is what I think it says, "Building assessed at 300 Rob't [Rads] gen to pay tax" [Rads] is my best attempt to read this as very light and seems to extend off the microfimed edge of page. It could be Rod???. My questions - would y'all think gen is for gentleman and why would another man be paying only the building assessment? I saw no value of buildings in the previous years taxation. Suggestions - ideas, PLEASE!!! 2. I saw no other CAVE taxed during these years...with no building taxed, would this mean he had no house on the land? If so, that would put him living in another county at that time! Thanks Alice in Fluvanna

Yes. Many of the books between 1800-1860 and various other papers and books were taken during the northern occupation of Stafford County. Hello to the List Does anyone know if there are gaps in the extant deeds available at Stafford County and in the holdings of the Library of Virginia? I have reviewed online at VSL the records available for ILL; some years are not shown, but neither do they explain the gaps. Thanks for helping Alice in Fluvanna
I would like to know if any of the Sneed family has a daughter named Sarah Sneed who married a J. L. Brooks and there siblings. Thanks Cathy
You asked about Yelverton Garrison of Stafford Co. I tried out a new (to me) genealogical technique which was recently given to me and a class full of genealogists. Use the search engine google (URL: www.google.com) Type in the full name of the person you are searching enclosed in quotes. "Yelverton Garrison" There was at least one hit for this man!!! What was it? I couldn't find a title to the list, but a quick scan indicated that these are Northern Neck Land Patents--the patent number is given--the date first--the patentee, and the watercourse on which the land was located. ( I didn't find Yelverton--that is for you to discover.) If you want to try to find a will/probate for Yelverton Garrison, I suggest you use the LDS family history library catalog which is on line, and look for the records of Stafford Co. www.familysearch.org The link to the catalog is on the lower right of the screen. Above it is a link to a list of over 3,000 worldwide FHCs. If you have a nearby LDS fam hist center, for a small fee, you can borrow films from Salt Lake City. But if you live in Virginia, you may be able to interlibrary loan from the VA State Library. But be sure whatever you library you use has a microfilm reader. The film itself is useless, otherwise. Good luck. E.W.Wallace
Yelverton GARRISON lived at least until 1860, when he appeared in the Stafford County census as a 65-year-old wheelwright. He appears to have had many children. Does anyone know whether there are probate records for Yelverton -- his will, an inventory, list of heirs, anything? Can anyone identified the John Heflin that married Elizabeth Bryant on 22 November 1821 in Wake Co., NC. Bondsman was William Allen. It appears that he is related to the Charles Heflin that married Polly Jones, Lewis Heflin that married Harriet Pullen, Phillip Heflin that married Ann Daniel and William Heflin that married Rebecca Richards. Thanks, Phyllis.

Thank you. Your warning of scams is a very legitimate one & I appreciate your thoughts. I am a senior with two grandsons, one in medical school, another in undergrad in the age group who will be expected to (and will) help restore this country. Until this message, I've only been able to weep. Our family has served in every war from the Revolution, and I was so very hopeful that there could be one generation without war. In this, there is no choice. Since there are so many grandparents on genealogical lists, I thought an idea of being able to do something positive when we may not be able to physically help could be of help to them also. My apologies. I know you only from genealogical lists, but after forwarding the following to my relatives & then friends, I thought others might be interested. If not, please delete & excuse. Sarah Everything seems so trivial. I'm neither hearing from nor sending messages other than to know that friends and relatives are safe and I know that is their reason also. This was in msn letter this morning. The ritual of flying flags and lighting candles is a beautiful gesture, but I needed more and I think this will be a small step. It has nothing to do with making money or adding to one's financial security. The writer had received a chain letter email asking people to invest $200 in stocks or mutual funds which prompted this letter, her response. Love, Sarah http://moneycentral.msn.com/articles/invest/extra/7853.asp?special=msn
This post was really off topic for genealogy. Many hoaxes are being passed around. I'm not saying this is one. Please keep posts to this list in the proper perspective. Thank you, Valerie Holmes Thomas Stafford Co. List Administrator vthomas@otn.net
Thanks. That is the same one that I have, but it bounces. I have made a couple of corrections to the document as follows: Following are Heflin intermarriages between Heflin's of the William Hefflinger line (on the left) and Heflin's in the Hefflinger line, William Heflin line, and William Hefflinger line on the right: **14 John E. Heflin m 122 Ann Delia Heflin (In Hefflinger line) **17 Ada Heflin m 121 William Strother Heflin Jr. (In Hefflinger line) **18 Eliza "Lydia" Adeline Heflin m 111 Pittman Heflin (In Hefflinger line) **1(11) James Thomas Heflin m Philadelphia Heflin (parents unknown) **1(11) James Thomas Heflin m Elizabeth Heflin (Widower d/o Mathais) **131 Ann Eliza Heflin m 1211 William A. Heflin (In Hefflinger line) **132 James Edward Heflin m 131 Catherine Heflin (in William Heflin line) **134(14) Arthur Bernard Heflin m 1(11)43 Blanche B. Heflin (In Wm. Hefflinger line) **1(11)4 Mortimer Heflin m 1224 Fanny R. Heflin (In Wm. Hefflinger line) **1231 Susan Ann Heflin m 1131 Joseph Heflin (In Hefflinger line) **1232 Fannie Lee Heflin m 1138 Bennett H. Heflin (In Hefflinger line) **13611 Lillie Beatrice English m 11318 Willie Wallace Heflin (In Hefflinger line) **1365 Joseph Clarence Heflin m 12(11)3 Olive Leone Heflin (In Wm. Hefflinger line) **1412 Laura Jane Heflin m 1137 Welford M. Heflin (Hefflinger line) In addition to the above, I believe that Elizabeth Hickerson married William Heflin (In Wlliam Hefflinger line) and William Strother Heflin Sr. (Hefflinger line). In general, the number assigned to an individual below would indicate his or her placement in the family. However, when additional family members were added, this is not always the case. e.g. 14157 in general would indicate the 7th child in the family of 1415, but that is not always the case. Where intermarriages were involved, the individual would have two different numbers in their respective charts. Phyllis
