    2. At the Stafford county courthouse, they (records) go from 1853 on to 1920. I have viewed them personaly. Before 1853 it was not mandated that couples register their marriages, etc. Good luck.

In the 1760s and 1770s there were several Buchanans in Falmouth--James and Andrew. James was apparently on the city board and was an attorney--and Andrew was an attorney as well. I don't know anything beyond that, but have run into them in a number of deeds, wills, etc. from King George Co. Karen Dale

    1. [VASTAFFO-L] BUCHANANs in Stafford County
    2. Dear List, I hope you can help me find the ancestors to William Buchanan, who married Florinda Brent and had children: Thomas G., William S., Charles N., John L. and Mary A. In a Spotsylvania county publication in the 1800s, it was written that William Buchanan, a farmer, "came to Spotsylvania county from Falmouth, in 1825." What I know is that we are directly descended from his son William S, born June 1833, in Spotsy and married Amanda Steuart. Charles N, born January 1831, married Sarah Osborne and raised a family in KY. Would like to find out what happened to the other children Thomas G, John L and Mary A. I'd also like to find out any information on the elder William and his wife Florinda Brent, who came from Falmouth, especially their parents. William's paternal ancestors, according to a biography on his son Charles, were English and among the early settlers of Virginia. His father came to America in the war of the Revolution, as a soldier in the British army.  At the close of the war, he located in Caroline County, Va., where he lived until his death, in 1824. Any information and the names of William's parents would be most appreciated. Thank you for whatever help you can provide. Sincerely, Patricia Johnson Savannah, GA

    2. I had an email questioning a surname Semmons, wanting to know if it could be Emmons. After checking the names and the handwriting, I realized the following: After comparing handwriting throughout the document I have come to the conclusion that William Semmons is William Lemmons. It looks just like a S we use today, but after looking at the L & S in the names (such as Lucy/Lemmons/Stephens and Scott) I have come to the reality that the S was really an "L". The "S" was consistent in writing as was the "L" I should have known better to check and compare the handwriting against each other. Please make the following changes in two names. Changes in Prisoners names for 1850 Census/Va. Penitentiary William Semmons White/1850/22 Should be William Lemmons S. Brooks White/1848/46 Should be L. Brooks June
