Hmmm. I'm not familiar with all the place names around here, but no doubt that is meant to be "Rappahannock" :) WOOFNJOE@aol.com wrote: > > you may want to check the Pappahannock Regioal Libray in Fredericksburg. This summer I will be coming from CA to VA to do research in Stafford County. I'd appreciate anyone knowledgeable on the local genealogical resources to advise me on the location of surviving old records. Are they in the courthouse, the library, local genealogical/historical society or elsewhere? I'm interested in pre-1800 to about 1815. I'm interested in Bartlett Mason; Nimrod Mason and his probable father, Lewis or Louis Mason. Lewis may be the son of John who is the son of William Mason. I have about 3 days to spend on site. I thank the list.
I would appreciate any help with a Marriage Bond or Marriage between William Brown and Lucinda (maiden name unknown) in Virginia Counties; Stafford, Culpeper, Spotsylvania, or Fairfax between 1820 and 1825. Thank you. Jessie Brown Clarkson

Concerning Nora and Agnes: Is it conceivable she is one and the same person? I suspect so. My great-grandfather had a housefull of girls--he even trained them to handle horses because he was short of sons. Anyway, the nice fellow left a journal, but do you think I can sort out who is who because of the nicknames? He gave each female in the household a nickname, including his wife (Toby when her name was Zilpa). Even my cousin, who was born in his home, doesn't know to whom the journal entry refers. My brother, when he began to talk, had trouble pronouncing my name, so my family had him call me Sister. That name stuck for many years!!! I hope I don't show up in the 1930 census as Sister! could some one please help me solve a problem I have in my research? here is the problem: William B. Payne m Minnie living in Falmouth Stratford county va in 1910 with kids Herman, elase Laura marry and Nora. NORA is 1 month old and the census was taken 23 apr 1910. My grandmother is Ruby Agnus Payne. Now here is where it gets messy. Agnus says she was born 17 apr 1910 and there never was a Nora. I found agnus in 1920 pa census when they moved here, but it puts her at age 9, thus born in 1911. Can anyone find a birth record for Nora Payne and or Ruby Agnus Payne, born to William Burle Payne in 1910 and 1911? thanks for any help you can give me Lori

Always glad to help! I got this information from Virginia Marriage Records, Compiled and Edited by Therese A. Fisher on CD. The four volumes contained on this CD are: Marriage Records of the City of Fredericksburg, and of Orange, Spotsylvania, and Stafford Counties, VA 1722-1850 (1990); Marriages in the New River Valley, VA: Montgomery, Floyd, Pulaski, and Giles Counties (1991); Marriages in Virginia: Spotsylvania Co. 1851-1900 and Orange Co. 1851-1867 (1992); Marriage Records of the City of Fredericksburg and the County of Stafford, VA 1851-1900 (1994). As time permits, I will be posting all of these marriage records on the Stafford County GenWeb site with the assistance of Suzanne Shephard, the new county coordinator. I am also in the process of transcribing the 1850 census for Stafford County for posting, as well as the earlier ones, as the Mussleman's left off with 1860. I am overwhelmed. I see several that are mine. What book did they come from? I am reading through each one looking for more clues. The newspaper clipping I have says Joseph Stone married Mrs. Susan Southard, so it sounds like she was a widow & I was looking for a Mr. Southard married to a Susan before 1823 so I could find her maiden name. Thank you again for your help. I appreciate it very much. Do you have any ancestors from NC? If so I can help you. Mary Hollye Hutchings" <hhutchings@erols.com> To: VASTAFFO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [VASTAFFO-L] RE: early marriage records These are the marriages that I could find for Stone and for Southard/Suthard during the time period that you are looking. I can add a little additional information about the FRITTER - STONE marriage in the list of Stafford County marriages so helpfully transcribed by Hollye. ALLEN GARRISON FRITTER was born 5 July 1858 in Stafford County, Virginia1, and died 8 May 1912 in Stafford County, Virginia. He married EMMA JANE STONE2 16 January 1882 in Stafford County, Virginia2. She was born May 1860 in Virginia3, and died Aft. 13 January 1920 in Stafford County, Virginia. The marriage record says that Emma Jane was the daughter of George Stone. I do not know whether this is correct. In the 1880 census, she is listed as daughter in the household of Fielding Barton Stone. She is not listed in the household of Fielding and Ann K. (Schooler) Stone in the 1860 census, though if she was really born in May 1860 she should have been. The 1870 census of Stafford County, Virginia, shows F. B. Stone (41), a farmer with $2000 in real property and $250 in personal property. Ann M. (39) is keeping house. Morison V. (28) and Emma (9) live with them. So if she is the child of George Stone, he must have let her live in the Fielding Barton Stone household. Stafford County records show that Allen G. Fritter was born on 5 July 1858 in that county to James and Sarah Fritter. His father, a farmer living in Stafford County, reported Allen's birth (p. 23, line 10). The 1900 census puts Allen's birth in July 1857. The 1900 census of Stafford County, Virginia, lists Allen G. Fritter (42) as a farmer in the Rock Hill District. He was born in July 1857 and has been married for 17 years to Emma J. (40, born in May 1860). She has had 6 children, all of them living: Harvey N. (16, a farm laborer, born in September 1883), Herman A. (14, born in March 1885, attending school), Mitchell G. (13, born in September 1886, in school), Elwood T. (10, born in June 1889, in school), Ethel M. (7, born in July 1892), and Vera E. (1, born in October 1898). They all are listed as born in Virginia to parents born in Virginia (page 9A, e.d. 90, household 167). The 1910 census of Stafford County, Virginia, lists Alley G. Fritter (50) with his wife Emma (49). They have been married for 28 years, the first marriage for each. "Alley" is a farmer in the Rock Hill area. Emma has had 6 children, all of whom are living. At home are daughter Ethel J. (15), son Herman (25), who is working as a clerk at "Corby bread" and is listed as married for 1 year with no children, and daughter Vera (11). They all report being born in Virginia (ED 107, p. 6B, household 103). Robert Kerns, a FRITTER researcher, posted this information online: Allie Garrison Fritter died on 8 May 1912 in Stafford, VA. Allie married Emma Jane Stone. She died after 1924. The 1920 census of Stafford County, Virginia, lists Emma J. Fritter (56) as the widowed head of her household in the Rock Hill District. Her daughter Ethel (29) is single (e.d. 114, p. 6B, household 129, enumerated on 13 January 1920). Notes 1. Stafford County Births, reel #45. 2. Carl P. Musselman, Musselman-Powell and Bowling Families of Spotsylvania and Stafford Counties, Virginia, (1993). 3. 1900 US Census, Virginia.

How far back to they go? Has anyone hired a researcher there? Thanks, Mary Looking for Joseph Stone & Mrs. Susan Southard in 1823. ==== VASTAFFO Mailing List ==== List problems? Thank you to all who answered my question about what marriage records can be found at the Stafford court house. The Fredericksburg newspaper for Jan. 25, 1823 states: "Married on Thursday last, by the Rev. Nathaniel Greaves, Mr. Joseph Stone to Mrs. Susan Southard, both of Stafford Co." Does anyone know which church Rev. Greaves was associated with? Does the marriage notice imply they married in Stafford or Fredericksburg? Since the paper knew who married them wouldn't that mean it was recorded somewhere? Does anyone have a Susan ____ marrying a Mr. Southard before 1823? My library has some parish records for Stafford but they are all to early for what I need. Anybody have ideas, suggestions, a Bible record or cousins for me? Thanks again, Mary
Most or all marriage records of Stafford County prior to the Civil War were destroyed and/or looted by Union troops during the winter of 1862-3. Starting in 1853, VA required all counties and cities to issue marriage licenses which was a continuation of the past practice of issuing marriage bonds. However, starting in 1853, each county and city had to complete a report on a yearly basis of all marriages and send a copy to the state. The report was compiled in marriage registers. I suspect that any marriage records that exist at the courthouse are there because they have obtained a copy from the Library of VA. Because of the Yankees, I'll probably never know the maiden name of one of my ggg grandmothers. Thanks a lot guys. Marriages before 1853, you have to check with the churches in the area,Like Aquia Episcopal Church, Overwharton Parrish in Prince William County, just past the Stafford Line. I do know that these two churches are the oldest and they may have records. Cathy
