    1. [VASTAFFO-L] Shelton Family
    2. Donna Petersen
    3. Hi again, Troy! I just realized that you didn't give me any birthdates (maybe you don't have any?) My Rodney Shelton was married to a much younger "Nancy" on the 1860 Census, so if that's the same Rodney, Jane Humphries would have been his first wife and she was deceased by 1860. Lucinda Shelton (age 3 on 1860 Census) was definitely the child of Rodney and Nancy, and my William Shelton, whose mother was definitely Jane, was already age 19 on that 1860 Census. Also, we either have two sets of twins on that census, or "Nancy", the second wife, was a widow and brought her children into the marriage. (Twins do run in some Shelton families in SC, VA, I noticed.) I'm not too savvy on how census takers would list that, but they listed three children, ages 19, 14, 7 (which is what I'm used to), THEN ages 14, 7, 4, 3, 2, as if they were starting over with a different set of children. What do you think? I'm sending you my "conjecturing" from census, death and birth records, and maybe someone from the Stafford County and Spotsylvania County lists can help us out, too (my William A. Shelton married in Spotsylvania County and lived there the rest of his life): I. Edward Shelton m. Nancy A. George Gustavus Shelton, m. Lucinda Pates 1. Mason Shelton, b. 1841; m. Nancy, b. 1849 a. 3. If anyone out there has more detailed information on this Peyton family, please share! Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! Lucinda Jane Peyton Bloxton Gregg (Lucinda "Jane" Peyton, a/k/a "L. J.", "Jane", or "Lucinda J."), was born in Stafford County, Virginia in 1815. Jane Peyton was probably the daughter of Thomas Peyton, b. ca. 1790 and Sarah Maddox Peyton, b. ca. 1794; d. 1 JUL 1877, age 83, Stafford County, VA. They were married in 1812 in Stafford County, VA. Thomas & Sarah (Maddox) Peyton's other children were: Richard Peyton (of Philadelphia, PA and Cincinnati, OH) Ann Carter (Peyton) Jenkins of Richmond, VA, who had two sons. They were quite wealthy and have a mausoleum at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. Robert T. Peyton, b. 1823, Stafford, VA; m. Sarah A.; d. age 48 on 29 AUG 1871. Rebecca Martin Peyton (Mrs. John Allen), b. 1826; d. 15 May 1854, age 28. (Their baby daughter, Rebecca Martin Allen, d. 12 APR 1855, age 11 mos.) They are buried in the Rollow Family Cemetery, Stafford County, VA. Simeon C. Peyton, b. 17 JAN 1829; d. 29 OCT 1905; m. Roxena T., b. 27 MAY 1836; d. 22 APR 1898 (who may have been a widow -- two step-children are listed on the Falmouth, Stafford Co., VA 1880 census: Roberta W. Newton (18) and George E. Newton (16).) Simeon C. Peyton, at age 30, was not married on the 24 Jul 1860 Stafford Courthouse census, when Lucinda Jane Peyton Bloxton's 20-yr-old son was visiting him from Shelby County, AL (Orion Bloxton). He WAS married on the 1870 Census for Falmouth, SC, VA. Sarah Maddox (Mrs. Thomas Peyton) was the sister of Catherine (Maddox) Proctor; Lucretia (Maddox) Jett Shackelford; and Benedicta (Maddox) (Mrs. Samuel Bloxton; then Mrs. Edward Fleury/Flurry/Flowery), Lucinda Jane Peyton Bloxton's mother-in-law. 1. [VASTAFFO-L] News from Garrisonville, 1916
    2. Laura Perry
    3. [transcribed by Laura Keyes Perry. Does anyone know who Mr. C. W. Friede was?] FREE LANCE-STAR Fredericksburg, Virginia 16 November 1916 NOTES FROM STAFFORD Garrisonville, Va., Nov. 13th, 1916. Mr. John A. Evans, of this place, one of our most popular and highly esteemed citizens has recovered from his illness and is out again. During his illness he had fifty-eight of his many friends to see him. Mr. Evans is 84 years old and is [a] remarkable man for his age. We have a good joke on Mr. Evans. He was very enthusiastic over the election and made a big effort to get well and be out Nov. 7th, so the night before he retired at 8 o'clock expecting to rise early and start out at 4:00 o'clock. He arose, dressed and took his overcoat on his arm, cane in hand and started off regardless of the fact that he found no member of the family astir. He happened to look at his watch when it was just 11 o'clock. He had been asleep only three hours. Mr. William Leard, of Pittsburgh, Pa., accompanied by his daughter, Miss Gertrude Leard, a beautiful young girl, and his trained nurse, Mr. Chas. Fuller, while en route in their touring car going South for the health of Mr. Leard, who is an invalid, met with a very serious accident. They were trying to make Fredericksburg before night and the car going very fast threw Miss Leard with severe force against the side of the car, just as she was in the act of covering her father up from the chill night air. She was severely hurt and while passing through Garrisonville she became unconscious. They stopped at the home of Mr. Samuel Garrison and everything was done to make the young lady comfortable until Dr. Sneed arrived. She soon regained consciousness. After stopping at Mr. Garrison's from Thursday until Monday they were able to start on their journey South. Mrs. E. E. Harn, of Baltimore, Md., who is visiting her relatives here and is a sister of Mrs. John A. Evans visited Richmond, Petersburg, Old Point and Hopewell. She was accompanied by Mrs. Samuel S. Garrison, of Garrisonville. Mr. E. S. Evans, of Hagerstown, Md., a hustling business man of that place, visited his father for a few days during his illness. Mrs. Sallie Norman, an esteemed lady of this place, who had the misfortune to have a severe fall, was confined to her bed for some time, but we are glad to hear that she is out again and is visiting her daughter, Mrs. C. H. Gill, but still suffering from the fall. Mrs. Enoch Fritter, a highly esteemed lady of Garrisonville, who has been sick for some time, we are glad to hear that she is improving. She is the mother of our popular merchant, Mr. E. D. Fritter, of this place. We are deeply grieved to see the death in The Free Lance of our old friend, Mr. J. W. Schooler, an ex-Confederate soldier of the Soldiers' Home, Richmond, Va. We shall miss his nice, long newsy letters in The Lance. May he rest in peace. We would be pleased to read a letter written by Mr. John W. Embrey, of the Soldiers' Home in The Lance. Mr. Embrey was visiting friends and relatives in Garrisonville a month ago but has returned to the Soldiers' Home. Mr. C. W. Friede and bride, of Washington, D.C., stopped for a short while at Mrs. Samuel Garrison's while passing through Garrisonville on their return from their bridal tour South. They made the trip in their car. There will be moving pictures at Rectory Hall once a month. Notice given later for the date. "Virginia." * * * * * * * * * * * Be kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving ... from Paul's letter to the Ephesians 4:32

    3. I do not know much about the COLVINs, since they do not seem to have married any of my ancestors (KEYES, BRIDWELL, BRAWNER, GARRISON, RATCLIFFE, HOLMES, etc.). But I did make a note of one interesting tidbit: In THE COLVIN RUN MILL, Ross D. Netherton says that the stream's name is "a corruption of the name of Colonel John Colvill, William Fairfax's friend and associate in various land transactions" (11). Whatever surname you are researching, you will find that the Stafford County website has a lot of information, including censuses. The home page is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~vastaffo/ The censuses are at http://www.rootsweb.com/~vastaffo/census/index.htm * * * * Be kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving ... from Paul's letter to the Ephesians 4:32
