Farms in Kentucky. Ohio, Indiana and many other states were offered as bounty lands after various wars - Revolutionary War, War of 1812, etc. I don't remember which areas were bounties after which wars but I bet someone on this list does! Another thing that helped push folks west was that they had divided the farms in Va among kids so many times that they could not make a living on them anymore. Many families sold out and headed west for more land while it was cheap.
