    3. Can someone help with this query? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda McAbee" <llmcabee@swoi.net> To: <alley@tampabay.rr.com> Sent: Thursday, January 16, 2003 4:53 PM Subject: 1783 move from Shenandoah co to Rockingham Co Hi. My ancestor, James Cunnyngham, lived on his 1777 grant from Ld Fairfax, near Holeman's Creek & New Market area. On a lease/deed dated 1783 James' residence is Rockingham Co. He is selling this grant which he had previously leased. What is confusing are the County records of Shen & Rockingham. He is on a Shen. record Nov 1783, Rock.co in 1784 poll list. Wife is in Shen co 1785 on poll list with children. She is listed again 1787 on poll list as untithable in Shen co. and again in 1787 he is exempted from poll tax in Rock co.. 1788 James and 2 sons are on Rock. Militia vouchers. Can you help explain the "back and forth" across the border. Did the border change during that time frame? Also, what were the conditions for that region during the Rev. War? I attempting to fill in the blanks in this family history and need an idea of the span from 1775 to 1883. Thanks very much for your time and interest. Linda McAbee

    3. I am so far from an authority on the rules of antiquity for taxing, etc., its ridiculous. I know that if you owned land in more than one county, you would appear on both county records, no matter which county was your residence. Why the wife and husband appeared to be in differing counties, I would have no idea. Also, after a certain age, the court would often remove you from Taxing responsibilities. Before the Revolution, the Taxing responsibilities were given to the Parishes. To be on a Poll list, you had to be a property holder. You probably already know all of this. But to vote in those days, you had to be a property holder. I'll bet there is someone who knows the answers. Wish I knew more.
