    2. Tom, Question 1: Subj: Fw: James McCarty Date: 10/1/01 7:26:04 AM Central Daylight Time From: hl@corlink.com (Harry Long) To: KATNKEV5458@aol.com ----- Original Message ----- From: Harry Long To: KATNKEV5458@aol.comc Sent: Sunday, September 30, 2001 11:03 AM Subject: James McCarty Thanks for your inquiry regarding the land of James McCarty and the information you sent on the McCarty Family. You are correct in assuming he lived next to George Adam Zirkle. George Adam Zirkle's 1,071 acre plantation, located west of New Market on the west side of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, was composed of three tracts of land - 502 acres purchased from Robert O'Neal, on 25 Apr 1762; 260 acres purchased from Philip Casner, on 24 Oct 1787 and a 309 acre grant from Thomas Lord Fairfax dated 23 Jul 1787. On 14 Aug 1777, as recorded in Shenandoah County Deed Book D, page 74; James McCarty for the sum of 20 pounds purchased from John Alderson and Mary his wife 120 acres of land located along the west side of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River and joining to the south with the 260 acre and the 309 acre tracts which were acquired by George Adam Zirkle. During his lifetime, and after Jonas McCarty had married his daughter, Catharine Zirkle, George Adam Zirkle gave to his daughter Catharine and her husband Jonas, 60 acres of land adjoining the south side of the 120 acres of land owned by James McCarty, the father of Jonas McCarty. On 11 Dec 1797, Jonas McCarty and Catharine his wife and Sarah mother of said Jonas McCarty sold to George Huber the 120 acres of land formerly owned by James McCarty deceased and the adjoining 60 acres of land which had been given to Jonas by his father-in-law, George Adam Zirkle. It is assumed that in the spring of 1797 that Jonas, his wife and children and his mother Sarah joined one of the many wagon trains leaving the Shenandoah Valley to start out anew in the western lands. By Marriage Bond issued 29 Dec 1787, Jonas McCarty was married to Catharine Zirkle, on 1 Jan 1788, by the Reverend Anderson Moffett.Date of marriage is from Shenandoah County Ministers Returns. Although the father George Adam Zirkle was a founder of the jointly owned Reformed and Lutheran Church here at New Market no evidence can be found where Jonas and Catharine had any of their children baptized. Harry E. Long Box 985 New Market, Virginia 22844 hl@corlink.com &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& Hardesty's History: Among the early settlers of the township were Abraham Darst, who came in 1794, Samuel Wise, John Coughenour and George W. Putnam, about 1795, Adam Roush and George Swisher, 1797, Joseph Rife, fall of 1800, Phineas Mathews, Joseph Mauck, Samuel R. Holcomb and Jacob Rothgeb in 1811. About the year 1794 a settlement was made upon the bank of the Ohio river, near the present village of Cheshire, land having been purchased of the Ohio Company's agent, P. Mathews. Three cabins were built about the same time by Paul and Abraham Darst, Adam Roush and Edward McMullen. Jonas McCarty, Christian Coughenour, Samuel Wise, the Van Zant and Reynolds families, Peter Knopp, Jacob Halfhill, Joseph Bradbury, Sabret Scott and Jeremiah Hacket also settled here at a very early date. **************************************************************** Question 2: I dont know if they stopped along the way. I know that some McCarty's later were in WV. **************************************************************** Question 3: I have never seen Lewis "History of Jay County, IN" Do you have that actual text electronically captured? That would be really cool, because my Moses M. McCarty and his sister Esther Jane McCarty went to Jay County, IN along with William Darst and his wife Barbara Halfhill Darst. I have never seen any hard documentation to prove Mary McCarty's marriage to Abraham Darst. Although many researchers say this is so. 3. Kathy, Thank you for the quick response. I don't have the book, in fact know it only from a citation? Do you know Ruth Walton? She did quite a bit of work in Jay County.
