    1. [VASHENAN] Road Petition

    3. Since the petition in question is identified only by date--1734 or 1737--I'm going to use the latter date and guess that Jane is inquiring about the petition made by early settlers in the Valley who, on 23 July 1737, protested the building of a road through Chester Gap. Daniel Bly quotes from that petition in _From the Rhine to the Shenandoah_. His source is: John F. Dorman, ed., _Orange County, Virginia, Deed Books 3 and 4--1738-1741_ (1966), pp. 112-113. Frieda Wilson printed a transcription of this petition in _Funkhouser: A Swiss-American Genealogy_ (1978), between pp. 52 and 53. Jim Funkhouser
