    1. Re: [VASHENAN] CLAYTORs
    2. Shirley Starks
    3. This is not my line. So, I may be tripping over my fingers and embarrass myself. I have 2 pages of Claytors indexed in a family book. (Yes, CLAYTOR with an R) There are about 8 Samuel Claytors & a few John Claytors, etc. I believe they are yours. I'm hopeful for you, because Bedford Co. is mentioned. If so, I have some of his history in the Rust family book. Warning.. I've abreviated. Please forgive typos. Its long. And no doubt, you already have this. RUST OF VIRGINIA, by Ellsworth Marshall Rust Pg 87 through several pages. "Thomas Claytor, II, whose will, Dec 27, 1750, was proven Sept. 28, 1756, m'd before 1730, Ann Mothershead, dau. of John & Elizabeth Mothershead, Westmoreland Co, VA [D & W, vol. 13, p. 38, Westmoreland Co.] His father of the same name was a proprietor of a land grant in Washington Parish 1718, m'd Katherine, whose will June 23, 1720, was proven Sep 28, 1720. Thosmas Claytor, II, had brother William who died before his father, and sister, Jane who m'd Carter & sister Ann, who m'd Goff. Alvin Claytor had brothers John, Thos, Wm., & Samuel, and sisters, Elizabeth & Anne. Thomas Claytor, II, father of Alvin was educated at Cambridge, Eng. (Pemborke College) about 1720. [Mrs. Stannard: "Colonial Virginia", p.292] Ann Mothershead, mother of Alvin Claytor was dau. of John Mothershead and wife, Elizabeth. His will Nov. 13, 1730, was proven May 26, 1731, Westmoreland Co. An inventory of the estate of Alvin Claytor was made in Westmoreland Co, Nov 22, 1755, and a supplementary inventory was filed Sep 28, 1762, there appears the item: "1756--to funeral expenses" and "By crop of tobacco made the year he died". In the same court, on Aug. 24, 1761, certain money and slaves were allotted to Samuel Walker in right of his wife's dower in the said Claytor's personal estate --one third, with two-thirds to Alvin Claytor's children. An inventory of the estate of Alvin Claytor was taken in BEDFORD CO, by Humphrey Pope, Laws, Butler, and Humphrey Quisenbury and returned amounting to 154 lbs-19-2. [I & A Bk 3; p.66, Bedford Co.] The Bedford Co Court on Oct 13, 1775, appointed Richard Stith, gent. Henry Terrill, and George Caldwell to state and settle accounts between Samuel Walker and the orphans of Alvin Claytor, and to return an account thereof to the court. Presumably, these children of Alvin Claytor, SAMUEL, and John had at that time reached their majority. [Order bk 1774-82, p.103, & Will Bk A, vol. I, pp 269-270--Bedford Co.]" .............................................................. Shirley's note: Back up.. Sarah Rust m'd Alvin Claytor, and was the mother of Samuel & John Claytor. The following goes on to tell that she next married Samuel Walker, creating the problem mentioned above. ............................................................................ ............ Back to the Book: Pg. 88 "The will of Samuel Walker, 2nd husband of Sarah (Rust) Claytor, May 9, 1787, proven June 5, 1788, gives name of his children --[Will Bk I, p.111, Cambell Co, VA] Campbell Co. was formed from Bedford Co, in 1782, and his home was thereafter in that county. It has not been conclusively determined whether these children so mentioned in the will of Samuel Walker were children of himself and wife of Sarah Rust Claytor Walker, but there is much evidence that such is true. The known duration of the marriage of Samuel Walker & Sarah Rust Claytor Walker, before Aug 24, 1761 to 1788 is of probative value, as well as the marriage bond of Nancy Walker and Thomas Moore, January 9, 1788, upon which John Claytor was Surety, it being noted that Samuel Walker, father of Nancy, had given his consent--Marriage Bonds, 1788, p. 45, Bedford Co.]" ............................................ Shirley again: I'm not finishing this yet. If you want it later, fine.. I'll gladly type it in.. But now, I want to get back to the Claytors. ............................................................................ ........................................................................... Every bit has led me to something new so I haven't sorted it all out yet, but there is a whole 'nother thing Phyllis just brought up that I didn't want to let slide by - the CLAYTOR family. > > As far as I can tell, the 'r' isn't a typo, nor a clerical mistake on an early land transaction the family maintained for fear their property ownership would be questioned; it's Claytor. And they don't seem to connect in any way to my Culpeper Claytons, who were in Essex (old New Kent) along the Mattapony River anyway, for a few generations prior. > > I don't know who the CLAYTORs are and am hoping someone on this list might because half of genealogy turns out to be a process of elimination. CLAYTORs seem to pop up suddenly in Bedford Co., Virginia with a Sgt. Samuel Claytor (abt.1752-1815) who served in the Revolution. He lived and died in Bedford, but so far everything I've found, including the origins of purported spouses, indicates he came to Bedford, Virginia directly from Pennsylvania. A Mrs. Lottie Pace Carothers, DAR ID#110247 born in Danville, Pittsylvania Co., Va. is one later descendant listing surnames of PACE, HAGERMAN, & MITCHELL from Sgt. Sam's first wife Ann ROGERS. And if I have noted this correctly, a Miss Julia Graham ANNSPAUGH DAR ID#42612 born in Bedford City, Va, a descendant of his 2nd wife Martha Ann MITCHELL. > > The 29 Mar 1789 Bedford Co.
