Thanks to all who have responded and who have also researched selected sites and cds for me. I'll try to answer some of the follow-up questions to the best of my ability. According to a book of Civil War soldiers that I found in Athens Co., John was born 16 Oct. 1807 in Shenandoah Co. and "moved from his native state to Athens County, Ohio in 1835." He married Jane Brooks in December of 1836. Isaac, whom I am assuming is his brother, seems to have arrived at the same time in Athens Co., and married Jane Brooks' niece within two years of their arrival also. I have tried without success to find any relationship with John and Isaac to the other known Williams families in the Athens Co. region. Many of the others were from PA or were illiterate. John and Isaac are always listed on the same census pages, always state their state of nativity as VA, and were both literate. Isaac's son stated in the 1910 census that his father was born in "Old Virginia." John and Isaac either owned or rented land originally set aside for Ohio University. I know that their farms were next to each other and know the range and township locations there in Ohio. Perhaps in the future I'll be able to research the land records. I believe that John's real birthdate was 01 October 1807 and that Isaac's was 30 April 1810 based upon other circumstantial evidence. I am relatively sure that John's birthdate of 16 Oct 1807 was a misreading of old microfilm on the part of the book compiler. Anyway, I did a search of the 1810 Shenandoah census and came up with the following family prospects based upon the fact that each of these families had at least 2 boys under the age of 10 listed: 1. Samuel Williams (2 males under 10) 2. Benj. Williams (2 males under 10) 3. James Williams - or McWilliams - I couldn't read it clearly (2 males under 10) 4. William Williams (3 males under 10) 5. Philip Williams (2 males under 10) I have not searched the surrounding counties for census information, but such would be plausible since I can only place the family in Shenandoah Co. at the time of John's birth in 1807. Jump ahead to the 1830 census. I reasoned that John and family "may" have still been in Shenandoah Co., VA at that time since he "moved from his native state, etc" in 1835. I found a few likely households within the Williams entries: pg. 151 Williams, Benjamin -- not a candidate - had only himself and his wife and children " 2 Btn 97th Regt.: Williams, Joseph -- not a candidate -- free colored family " " Williams, John -- not a candidate -- wrong ages in household pg. 152 2Btn 13th Regt.: Williams, Isaac -- age 20-30 years C0ULD BE "MY" ISAAC!! " " Williams, Peter Sr. -- not a candidate -- wrong ages in household pg. 153 Williams, David -- not a candidate -- wrong ages in household pg. 154 Williams, Thomas -- not a candidate -- seems to be he and his wife " Williams, Benjamin -- not a candidate -- seems to be himself, his wife, a male under 5 pg. 85[Woodstock] Williams, Philip jr -- not a candidate -- himself, his wife, and male under 5 pg. 86 Williams, Mary -- possible -- several people in household, including 2 males 20-30 pg. 87 Williams, Lewis -- not a candidate -- wrong ages in household " Williams, John -- possible -- 2 males 20-30, a female 20-30, 2 females under 5 (COULD BE JOHN, A BROTHER OR OTHER RELATIVE, A SISTER-IN-LAW, AND TWO YOUNG NIECES pg. 88 Williams, Joel Sr. -- possible -- has 1 son 20-30 along with other people in household " Williams, Joel jr. -- not possible -- wrong ages in household " Williams, Jacob -- not possible -- himself, wife, and 4 small children " Williams, Moses -- not possible -- himself, wife, and a small son As you can see, the possibilities are limited. I am very interested in the Williams families listed on pgs. 86, 87 & 88 of the census. I cannot tell where they lived (I couldn't read it and I'm not familiar with Shenandoah Co. geography yet) but several are listed on lines 7, 8, 10, and 11 on page 88, which would suggest a possible family connection. It would appear that these are the sons of Joel Sr. (age 60-70). I am also interested in the Isaac Williams of the 2nd Battalion, 13th Regiment. To answer another question: John and Isaac were both too young to fight in the War of 1812, however, their father supposedly would have been the right age to do so. Well, I think now everyone knows pretty much what I know, except for their descendants which I will supply to anyone who is interested. Williams b. 16 Oct 1807 Hello Kim, and researchers, In Ohio Settlers cd, I found many John Williams, in the war of 1812...don't know if any are the ones you are looking for...An example of one is Roll of Capt. John McNeals Co/Cavalry, 1812 Roster. County unknown. It lists John Williams, Musician, amongst other names. Would your John have been in the war of 1812, as well as the Civil War? Do you know the cemetery in probably Athens County that he might have been buried in? I see Cemetery lists for Ohio on one of the disks. Hope this is of some help.
