Researching John J. Cooper, born 1813 in VA. In 1833 married Mary (Polly)Henkins in Shenandoah Co., VA. The Shenandoah Co. Personal Property Tax List for 1831, in James Allen’s district, list 3 Coopers: George W., Joseph and a Jacob. There are at least 2 more George Coopers, one was a saddler and the other one was a shoemaker. Is the George W. Cooper listed in the Tax list one of these George's? Would like to determine if the George, Joseph or Jacob listed in the tax list have any ties to John J. Cooper Edith, I have saved the message long enough! Have you found anything to help yet? Where did you get the occupations? First I did not take a group to LVA this year. Jim and I and another couple went to Salt Lake City the first week in January and she & I stayed on a 2nd week. I have abstracted what I thought would help with John J. Cooper. If you copied the total list, please recheck these. As I understand the Personal Property tax lists, this is the way they can be used to help determine sons. I don't remember why you think John J's dad is a George or do you? If John J. Cooper lived with his father and using the dates you gave above in ca. 1834 he should be listed in the VA Personal Property Tax Lists with his father. Names were listed when the men were 21 before that they are only numbers "above 16". Have you read that far? Does any of this help? Unless I missed some John J. or he is a new kid on the block! he is the son of Jacob Cooper...Jacob had a possible son with him in the earlier years. So did Joseph but it looks like the Joseph is his son as his >2 become >1 when the new Joseph appears. They were required to visit. So I listed the one I knew might be associated. Check the census and marriage records to determine if there are too many sons in the Henkins household. Thereis a good chance he is with Geoorge then Mary and not yet 21 so he is not named. That would work out just fine. However, if that is a son with George and Mary all these years that blows my theory. Let me know how it works out.
