Sandy, I have been looking over the information on John Wetzel and I am attaching a copy of John Wetzel and Christiana Coffman's "obligation" or intent to marry. Let me know if you think that the first line says "we John Wetzel of Henry Wetzel" and does this mean that Henry is the father of John. I see that Samuel Wetzel's name is on the bottom and I thought maybe that is a bondsman signature as you sited "Shenandoah County Marriage Bonds 1772-1850" page 81. John's son David Wetzel is my husband's line. We feel that our David was indeed born around 1802, married Leah Pence in July of 1882, had James, Rebecca, Sidney Ann and Peter) and then married Rachael Slater in May of 1868, when he was 66 years old. This is the marriage that produced 1)David (never married d. 10 Oct 1949) 2)Sarah 3)William McCauley(my husband's grandfather), and 4) Eliza (see above bond/marriage licenses.) We have not seen any middle initial connected with our David. There does appear to be a David F. Wetzel born in the 1790? He is often confused/interchanged with our David. [[[[iv. DAVID F. WETZEL, b. 1793, Shenandoah Co., VA; m. LEAH PENCE, 31 Jul 1822, Shenandoah Co., VA]]]. This would mean that David F. was born 5 years before John and Christina were married. Also you will see (attached) that Leah's name is also shown as Feah in some genealogy lists. Do you have anymore information about our David line? I thought maybe by including a bit on my WETZEL line it may help to pinpoint my WOLF line (Mainly John's father). I thought maybe desc. of the Wetzel/Kauffman lines may recognize my Wolf family. Thx again everyone for your time, help, and guidance! I appreciate it very much! Sandi Komosinski By the way, I am more than willing to share all the info I have on all these lines. All of their children were born in Virginia, in the Forestville/Mount Jackson area of Shenandoah County. For many, many years it was believed that John and Sophia had a son Otto, born about 1827 in Virginia. Finally, after some very extensive research, it is now believed that there was no Otto. There is an Otto in the Indianapolis area but after much research this Otto could not be ours as he was born in Bavaria. And a child of his approximate age never showed up in the Virginia or Ohio census records that would have matched up with ours. So as far as I am concerned, there was no son named Otto, unless someone can prove otherwise. John and Sophia were found in the 1820 census for Mt. Pleasant, Shenandoah Co., VA: John Wolf, 1 free white male 16-26 1 free white female 16-26 1 person engaged in manufacturing The 1830 census for the Western District in Shenandoah Co., Virginia shows the following: John Wolf (of Adam) 2 white males under 5 (Abraham 1824 & William 1825) 1 white male of 30 under 40 (John 1795) 2 white females under 5 (Elizabeth 1829 & Sidney Amanda 1830) 1 white female of 5 & under 10 (Diana 1821) 1 white female of 30 under 40 (Sophia 1799) The family has not been found in any 1840 census for Virginia, Ohio, or Indiana, even though we do know the family was in Virginia in 1844 as their son Isaac was born in Virginia. More research on this needs to be done. Around 1848 the family left Virginia by covered wagon and went to Springfield, Clark Co., Ohio. John had the first kerosene lamp in Springfield and people from all over came to see it. John Wolf is listed in the 1852 City Directory for Springfield as a laborer and boarding with George Dibert, a brick maker. In 1853 the Wolf's left Springfield by train and settled in Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana. The "obligation" you write about in your message below is the marriage bond. What the bond's "obligation" is not an intent to marry. It is meant to assure that there is no legal reason why the marriage should not take place. The most common of these were that both parties were of legal age, that neither were married and that the were not too closely related (per laws of the church or state). The bondsman was not necessarily the father of either the bride or groom. But if David was actually born in 1802, then he was not yet of age. Therefore there needed to be some sort of consent furnished by a parent. Perhaps signed the bond was that consent. If you sent for the marriage record, did you ask for or get all the papers associated with the record. There is often consent slips. I don't know where the marriage bonds are now kept in Shenandoah County, but many years ago they were filed in little file drawers in the clerk's office in Woodstock. I think these contained loose papers as well as the bond, wrapped with a ribbon. Richard Pence Fairfax, VA ----- Original Message ----- From: "J.
