Vashenen Subscribers, We posted this to our Boschong List a few minutes ago and decided that it might be of interest to this List too. We have been privileged to have papers, pictures and documents in our possession for a short time that belong to Lowery B. Saunders of Manassas, Virginia a descendant of John M. Bushong and Lydia Haun. We must send them back to him soon, but before we do, we will share with you. This will show you some of the married connections into the early Bushong family of Shenandoah County, Virginia. Notice the number of names that are also connected to the Battlefield family. >From the papers of Mrs. Lawrence E. Marston, Alexandria, Virginia written to Frances Kathryn (Bushong) Saunders of Manassas, Virginia. {No date on this information but Frances Bushong Saunders was born 1913 and died in 1999.) Her father was Joseph Loche Bushong and her mother was Gladys Dinges. "From Aunt Bettie Boyer's notes, I just found that we really are Cousins, on Mr. Bushong's side of the family. It is like this. Madaline, the oldest daughter of Martin and Christina Miley, married first Emmanuel Gochenour, who died young and soon after their marriage. Later she married George Maphis, on December 15, 1817. {Bond posted on 13 December} To them were born three sons and one daughter. 1. John Miley Maphis, married Betty Anne Caufelt {Coffelt} 2. Joseph Maphis, married Maria Rhodes, daughter of Daniel and Susan (Wiseman) Rhodes. 3. Samuel Maphis, married 1st Ann Wiseman and 2nd Sophia Saum. 4. Lydia Maphis, married John Hamman. Daniel Rhodes was the fourth son of Michael and Nancy Anna (Strickler) Rhodes. My great grandfather, David Rhodes, born 1792 was a brother to Daniel. They were grandsons of Rev. John Rhodes, who was massacred by Indians in 1764 or near that time. You've read this in Kercheval's and other histories. The children of Joseph and Maria (Rhodes) Maphis were: 1. Virginia C. Maphis, born 1844. Married Mahlon Bushong in 1875. They have two sons, Frank and Lauck. 2. Sarah Ellen Maphis married James W. Saum 3. Lydia F. Maphis married William Bauserman 4. George Ira Maphis died young 5. Benjamin Franklin Maphis married Clara Spiker. 2nd marriage to Grace Nichol 6. James B. Maphis married Minnie Ruby 7. Annie Maphis married George Sager 8. Emma T. Maphis married John Pifer 9. Martha S. Maphis married Charles Swartz Therefore, we are Cousins descended from Rev. I am a member with him as my Ancestor, so is Anna Maphis and others of Rhodes family.
