In the 1870 census we find 6 month Milton living with Rachel: 1870 US Census, page 10, Ashby, Shenandoah, Virginia. Dwelling 73, Family 73. Nancy Coffman 34 4000/600 housekeeper VA, Barbara A Coffman 2 VA, Sarah E Ryman 9 VA, Joseph Ryman 77 blacksmith VA, Rachel Ryman 24 VA, Milton Ryman 6/12 VA, Jacob Chick 20 VA laborer. Harpine's Zirkle family history says Rachel is the daughter of Levi Ryman and Annie Zirkle. Rachel married Elcana Miller on 28 July 1870. Rachel is also profiled in Vann's analysis of the 1860 Census (Volume 4, p. 334-335) but no mention of Charles is made there. It is possible that Charles Milton Ryman was base born, i.e. Rachel was unmarried...
