Vashenan Listmates, I had transcribed this earlier this morning and sent it to Jan but decided to put it on the List since sometimes you have to go through the back door to get to the front. Maybe someone on the List who is researching some of these names can help Jan with the mystery of Henry Polk and the Rymans. In the 1860 Census, Shenandoah County, Dwelling 1142, family 1140 (Orkney Springs), 37 year old Henry Polk is a farm hand in the family of Lydia Wolf (maiden name Will, daughter of George Will and Catherine Byrd). Their neighbors are Joseph and Elizabeth Ryman. Marvin J Vann, "Shenandoah County, Virginia: A study of the 1860 Census," Volume 4, page 340, says this about Henry: "Henry Polk resided with the family of John and Christina Ryman at the time of the 1850 Census. There may have been some relationship of Henry to 12 year old John M Polk in dwelling 1144. They are the only two individuals with the surname Polk in this immediate area. When John married he did not list the name of his father. He indicates that his mothers name was Rebecca. This was a rather common occurrance for base-born children. There is no evidence that Henry was the father of John, however, it does pose an interesting question." Next door to Lydia Wolf in the 1860 Census is the family of Joseph Ryman, brother of Elizabeth Ryman Good, his wife Elizabeth, and their daughters Nancy, Rachel and Sarah. The most interesting chancery case you present below indicates that Henry Polk is the half brother of some of the individuals listed. Looking at the records for these people it seems that Henry was the son of Elizabeth Ryman Good 1801-1891 who was the daughter of John Ryman and Christina Fadely and the wife of Abraham Good born 1797. "...leaving as his heirs at law his half brothers and sisters and their children Abraham Good, Christena Good, Mary Webb, Catharine Marston and Joseph Marston her husband, half brothers and sisters and nephews Noah Good, Jacob Good, Greenbury Webb..." Catherine Marston: Catharine Good, 26, daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth, married Joseph Marston, 31, son of Joseph and Hannah, on 13 May 1869 Mary Webb could be one of: Ann A Good, 27, daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth married Jacob Webb, 30, son of Haram and Sarah, on 25 Dec 1866 Sarah Good, 22, daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth, married Isaac Webb Jr., 33, son of Haram and Sarah, on 13 Mar 1862 Abraham and Elizabeth also had a son named Abraham Unfortunately the records I have access to show no further light on Henry Polk, but I hope this helps.
