Good Morning Vashenan Listmates, We found the following article in the The Shenandoah Valley Herald for 1882 and was wondering where Valley Forge is located in Shenandoah County? The Shenandoah Valley Herald Wednesday, 15 March 1882 Page 2, Column 4 On March 8th, William Bailey sold a house and lot, about a mile east of Valley Forge, in this county, to Franklin Bushong for $100. ------------------------ Thanks, Gloria Bushong
The only current Valley Forge I know of is where George Washington over wintered his troops in the winter of 1777 in the Revolutionary War. And it's no where near VA. So, it may be a no-longer-existing location. However, I did find other references to a "valley forge" in VA. Snippet as follows: "I have written another book about Shenandoah County ancestors. ... When I was able to buy the original Union Forge records from a Stoneburner neighbor I was elated because not only did it give a record of a Valley forge (only two were here in the Valley) but the materials gave hundreds of Valley names and names of companies and persons outside the Valley who dealt there and what they bought and sold." This I found at: http://www.user.shentel.net/ mlw/ and the term "valley forge" may just refer to a forge in a valley. So, you might want to contact the author of that site, mlw@shentel.net who may know more about the location of the valley forges he/she mentioned. I have no source after 1858, but I assume it must be the same. Valley Forge, A, was located on Stony Creek, 8 miles SW of Woodstock, 1 mile below Columbia Furnace.. I should guess it is the old forge located between Columbia Liberty Iron Co. and L. Fadley in the Madison District map of the 1885 Atlas, shown here http://www.vagenweb.org/shenandoah/mapmadison1.html Tom Pierce ----- Original Message ----- From: <Chochoruss@aol.com> To: <vashenan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 30, 2010 10:40 AM Subject: [VASHENAN] Where is Valley Forge in Shenandoah County? > Good Morning Vashenan Listmates, We found the following article in the The > Shenandoah Valley Herald for 1882 and was wondering where Valley Forge is > located in Shenandoah County? > > The Shenandoah Valley Herald > Wednesday, 15 March 1882 > Page 2, Column 4 > > On March 8th, William Bailey sold a house and lot, about a mile east of > Valley Forge, in this county, to Franklin Bushong for $100. > ------------------------ > Thanks, Gloria Bushong > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > VASHENAN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
