    2. Kay Holmes
    3. Gloria,   Thinking about your question yesterday, I looked at census records I've collected for my people in Shenandoah County.   In 1860 most designations were 'Districts' which corresponded to a Post Office of the same name: Columbia Furnace, Liberty Furnace, Edinburg, Lantz's Mill, Woodstock. The exception was Powels [sic] Fort which had no label. One household there showed Seven Fountains PO; the other, Edinburg.   In 1870 the three geographic areas where twelve of my families lived were all designated 'Townships': Madison, Stonewall, and Johnson [sic]. In three cases, the old PO name had been written in, but was struck out and replaced with 'Edinburg'.   In 1880 Madison and Davis appear as 'Townships'. Six households were in 'Stonewall Dist'. Another was listed in 'Stonewall', without designation.   In 1900 enumerator R. L. Lambert noted 'Madison District (west part)'; Samuel Coverston recorded 'Johnston Township'; Henry B. Burner classified Stonewall a 'Township' (one  household indicated within Woodstock); while Henry and Samuel Hounshell wrote 'Stonewall Dist (part of)'.   In 1910 my one household remaining in Shenandoah County lived in 'Stonewall Magisterial Dist (part of)'. In 1920 the record shows 'Stonewall Dist'.   So looking at my sample, the 'Township' designation appears in 1870 and persists in some instances through 1900.   One curiosity I did observe within ancestry.com data some time back was reference to Stonewall as 'St. Onewall'. ...   Kay Holmes --- On Fri, 7/30/10, Chochoruss@aol.com <Chochoruss@aol.com> wrote: From: Chochoruss@aol.com <Chochoruss@aol.com> Subject: [VASHENAN] A question about census records for Virginia To: vashenan@rootsweb.com Date: Friday, July 30, 2010, 5:49 AM Good Morning Vashenan Listmates, It is hotter then you know what here. High today of 96 with heat index of 105 and we know that a lot of you are  experiencing the same thing. I hate to even think what my electric bill will be  this month. We have a question which may seem dumb to some. We know that Virginia is  different then a lot of the other states in their governing designation of  districts, counties, cities and towns. We know there are 40 Independent cities surrounded by a county but not part of, for instance Staunton is an Independent City and not part of Augusta  County,  we know there are Mag. Districts within the counties, for  instance Ashby, Stonewall, Madison, etc. and we know there are towns which  are part of the county where they are located........ But we are seeing on  the census records on Ancestry a designation of township.  I didn't  think that Virginia had townships. Can someone explain what this means? Did someone just make a mistake and it should be District not Township? Or are there actually townships? 1. [VASHENAN] Interesting Will of George W. Shaffer/Shaeffer/Schaeffer, New Market, Virginia
    2. Good Afternoon Vashenan Listmates and in particular Sharon, While looking for some information in old newspapers, I came across the following which I wanted to share since this is of historic value. It is the first time in the history of Shenandoah County, that a slate was admitted as a Will into the court for probate. ---------------- The Shenandoah Herald Friday, 12 April 1901 Page 3, Column 3 & 4 COUNTY COURT PROCEEDINGS Last Will and Testament of George W. Shaeffer, deceased, admitted to probate. In admitting this Will to probate, C. W. Bennick attorney of New Market, produced a slate into court, on which was written this Will, and handwriting of Testator proven, and the Will on the slate admitted to record. PERSONAL A WILL WRITTEN ON A SLATE On last Monday the Will of Mr. George Schaeffer of New Market, written on a slate in the handwriting of the testator was admitted to probate. For the first time in the history of this county, the clerk finds it to be his duty to file among the papers of his office a slate. Mr. Shaeffer wrote the Will on a slate and intended to copy on paper the following day, but died before he could do so. --------------------- TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTION Cedar Grove Cemetery, North of New Market and across from Cedar Grove Brethren Church on Hwy 11 (Valley Pike) George W. 3. If you're looking at the 1870 census, Virginia was under Reconstruction at that time and the Federal authorities called Magisterial Districts by the name of Township instead. Don't know why, but I suppose it was part of their plan. The Constitution of 1871 straightened everything out, I believe. Fravel, son of P. J. Fravel, one of our oldest and best known merchants, died at the age of nearly 41 years. Charles Fravel was a young man of bright mind. He was exceedingly quick in business. For a number of years, he was teller of the Shenandoah county Bank, and was afterwards engaged in the office of an Insurance Company in Washington. He was very popular among a host of friends. He may have had enemies, but if so, we never heard of it. He was accomodating, kind and generous, a favorite in the community almost an idol in the family where his uniform kindness had won the most tender affection of his relatives. He could not be otherwise than respected and loved by a large circle of friends. The tidings of his death brought sadness to many hearths. After a touching funeral sermon last Saturday afternoon by his pastor Dr. P. D. Stephenson of the Presbyterian Church, his remains were followed by a large concourse of friends to his resting place in the Lutheran cemetery. We all mourn his death, for he was one of us. ------------------------ 3. Fravel, her only child, and our fellow townsman. When the silver cord of her life was loosed, another of the few threads leading back into the distant past of our town and community was severed. She was born 21 April 1807, in Woodstock, in the house now owned by Mr. David Gillock. She had nearly completed 81 years of pilgrimage. In 1828 she was married to Mr. David Fravel. In 1830 he died, leaving her with this only child, Philip, then an infant not a year old. These fifty eight years of widowhood have been passed among us, witnessing the generations come and go before her. Her maiden name was Frances Miller. She was the last in life of a family of thirteen children, born to Philip and Elizabeth Miller. She remembered the departure of her father in officer's uniform for the British War of 1812, and had heard her mother's mother, Mrs. Fanny Grove, tell of Revolutionary times. Mrs. Grove came from Pennsylvania. Mrs. Fravel's mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Miller, was one of the original members organized into the Woodstock Presbyterian Church in 1824, or The Union Church of Shenandoah, as it was then called. She herself united with this church on 28 March 1829, living in its communion nearly 59 years. An extract from the minute of the Church Session Book for 28 March 1829 is as follows: "The following persons, after conversation with reflectively on their experimental acquaintance with religion, were duly admitted as members of the Church in full communion, viz: Joseph Fetzer, Philip Fetzer, Alfred Tobin, Frances Fravel, Mary L. Johnston, Sydney Ott, Elizabeth Donaldson, Barbara A. Effinger, Mary Fravel and Jane Morris (a person of color)" of these 10 persons Mrs. Mary (Polly) Fravel only survives. The latter years of Mrs. Fravel's life were spent in blindness from cataracts. This was also the case with her mother Mrs. Elizabeth Miller, who died at the more advanced age of 82. This fact led to the selection of the same passage of scripture for consideration at the burial of each, "And there shall be no night there," from the 22nd chapter and 5th verse of the Book of Revelation. ------------------------- The Shenandoah Herald Friday, 10 August 1888 Page 3, Column 1 We were shown a cabbage stalk from Mr. Philip J. Fravel's garden that was a perfect curiosity. On it were six well formed and perfect heads, each one on its one distinct stem that projected from the parent stalk. Some of the heads were good sized ones, while all were perfectly formed and solid. -------------------------- The Shenandoah Herald Friday, 17 February 1899 Page 3, Column 4 OBITUARY P. J. FRAVEL P. J. Fravel, the oldest merchant of this place and one who had been well and favorably known in business circles for nearly a half century, died unselectively at his home, on last Saturday morning at 4 o'clock. On Wednesday night he locked the rear door of his store room and was standing outside looking for a peculiarly bright start, of which he had been reading, when he was suddenly attacked by vertigo, and fell down a flight of about four steps. His chief injury seemed to be about the hip which the surgeons pronounced to be slightly fractured. He suffered on Wednesday night complaining of the pain in his hip. On Friday and Friday night he seemed to be doing as well as could be expected, but early on Saturday morning his spirit passed away. He was a man of fine business qualifications. He enjoyed the confidence of the community in which he lived. He had been a consistent and faithful member of the Presbyterian Church for many years. He leaves a family consisting of his wife, four sons and two daughters. Two of his sons and one daughter are married. In their deep tribulation they have deep sympathy of the entire community. His body, after the funeral service at the house, was buried in the Lutheran Cemetery. SAME NEWSPAPER SAME COLUMN DEATH OF MR. P. J. FRAVEL Suddenly, about 3 AM Saturday, 11 February 1899, at his home in Woodstock, Virginia, our beloved and honored friend and brother passed to his Father's house above. We can hardly realize yet, that he is indeed gone, so suddenly, so unexpected was the shock. Mr. Fravel had fallen a few nights before, and hurt his hip, but seemed to be doing well, and his friends hoped to see him up in ten days or so. But in an instant, the messenger came, as he lay quietly in bed, "Heartfailure" took him off. His funeral was from the house, on account of the furious, almost unprecedented wintry storm, then raging. It was 10:30 AM Monday 13 February 1899. Friends filled the room where his body lay, and many more who could not get there, by reason of the violence of the elements, mourned his loss at their homes. All of his children were present, except his daughter Mrs. Emma Sager and her husband, detained by the sickness of their child. An honored Ruling Elder of the Presbyterian Church for thirty-nine years, the Clerk of the Session, faithful and efficient, a modest high toned Christian gentleman, an upright reliable, Businessman, a courteous, intelligent, genial, social companion, and affectionate husband, and father, all this was Mr. Fravel. He was sixty-nine years old last January and spent his life in Woodstock the place of his birth. He will be missed, sorely missed, by his family, by his church, by the whole community. But we must think of him, and not of ourselves. For his end was peace and his eternity will be glorious. Pastor, {Dr. P. D. Stephenson} ----------------- TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTION Emanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Virginia PHILIP J. FRAVEL Born: 25 January 1830 Died: 11 February 1899 EMMA E. 1. [VASHENAN] Another Thomas J. Rinker, Born December 1824, VA, s/o John & Elizabeth
    2. Good Evening Vashenan Listmates, When we were researching Thomas Jefferson Rinker, the son of Jacob Rinker Jr. and Mary Fravel, we found another Thomas J. Rinker in the 1900 census and we thought that we should put this information out on the List, so that researchers would not mix him up with Thomas Jefferson Rinker since they were both born in Virginia, one born in December 1824 and one born 1827-28. This other Thomas J. Rinker was Thomas James Rinker and we found him when we were trying to figure out whether Thomas Jefferson Rinker died before 1900. We have determined after not finding Thomas Jefferson Rinker in the 1900 census that he probably did die before 1900 and we are guessing in Culpeper County, Virginia where son Henry C. Rinker was living in the 1900 census. The other Thomas James Rinker was born December 1824 to John and Elizabeth Rinker who were living in Hampshire County, Virginia in the 1850 census. At that time this son Thomas was 26 and a laborer. He married around 1855 to Kesiah Hanlin/Hamlin and they moved around quite a bit. First I found them in Illinois, then in Missouri where he and his wife died. Him in 1909, I think, and she in 8 August 1920 in Clinton County, Missouri. and is buried in the Dunkard Cemetery. Look at the 1900 census below with his birth date. We got the information about Kesiah off of her death certificate. --------------------------- We did find in the Missouri State Archives a death record in Lawrence County, Missouri for a Thomas Jefferson Rinker but he was born 8 March 1857 and died 29 September 1929. His father was a Roy Rinker. Thought you would want to know that. --------------------------- Here are census records for Thomas James Rinker, son of John and Elizabeth, born in Virginia, December 1824. 1850 Federal Census: Virginia District 24 Hampshire County Enumerated 19 September 1850 Page 206A Lines 32-42, HH 902/902 John Rinker 66/Male/Farmer/$5000/MD Elizabeth Rinker 60/Female/MD Catharine Rinker 39/Female/VA Esther Rinker 37/Female/VA Elizabeth Rinker 36/Female/VA John Rinker 35/Male/Laborer/VA Daniel Rinker 33/Male/Laborer/VA Nicholas Rinker 30/Male/Laborer/VA Philip Rinker 28/Male/Laborer/VA Thomas Rinker 26/Male/Laborer/VA Samuel Rinker 23/Male/Laborer/VA Frederick Rinker 21/Male/Laborer/VA Joshua Rinker 19/Male/Laborer/VA Elijah Rinker 4/Male/VA Israel Silas 23/Male/Laborer/VA ------------------------- 1860 Federal Census: Didn't find --------------------------- 1870 Federal Census: Illinois Embarrass Township, Edgar County Enumerated 15 July 1870 Page 78B Lines 19-27, HH 116/115 Thomas Rinker 43/Male/White/Farmer/$250-$325/VA Kezia Rinker 37/Female/White/HouseKeeping/VA Martha Rinker 17/Female/White/VA Jobe Rinker 16/Male/White/AtHome/VA Mary Rinker 14/Female/White/AtHome/VA Perlina Rinker 13/Female/White/AtHome/VA Sarah Rinker 11/Female/White/AtHome/VA Mickel Rinker 8/Male/White/AtHome/VA Fannie Rinker 4/Female/White/AtHome/IL ------------------- 1880 Federal Census: Missouri Gomer Township, ED 178, Caldwell County Enumerated 4 June 1880 Page 291C & D Lines 45-50 & 1, HH 63/66 Thomas Rinker 56/W/M/Married/Farmer/VA/VA/VA Kezia Rinker 47/W/F/Wife/KeepingHouse/VA/VA/VA Mary Rinker 24W/F//Dau/Single/AtHome/VA/VA/VA Michael Rinker 18/W/M/Son/Single/Farmer/MD/VA/VA Fanny Rinker 14/W/F/Dau/IL/VA/VA Adina Rinker 8/W/F/Dau/IL/VA/VA {Twin} Abrina Rinker 8/W/F/Dau/IL/VA/VA/VA {Twin} ------------------------ 1900 Federal Census: Missouri Marceline Township & City, ED 83, Linn County Enumerated 8 June 1900 Page 221A, Sheet 7 Lines 15-22, HH 322/324 Charles Bush Head/W/M/Dec1852/47/Md21yrs/DayLaborerCoalMine/OwnMtgHm/IN/IN/IN Sarah Bush Wife/W/F/June1858/41/10children4living/VA/VA/VA Walter Bush Son/W/M/May1880/20/Single/DayLaborerCoalMine/IL/IN/VA Guy Bush Son/W/M/Jan1885/15/AttendedSchool/IL/IN/VA Charles Bush Son/W/M/May1891/9/AttendedSchool/MO/IN/VA Harry Bush Son/W/M/Sept1899/8mos/MO/IN/VA THOMAS RINKER FatherInLaw/W/M/DEC1824/76/Md48yrs//VA/VA/VA Kissy Rinker MotherInLaw/W/F/May1833/67/9children8living/VA/VA/VA ---------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

I see a land record on 01 Jan 1800 that lists the children of and heirs of David McCarty as: John McCarty, John Hurst and his wife Mary, Absolum Hurst and his wife Catherine, Jessie Hurst and his wife Nancy, Sally McCarty, Thomas McCarty, William McCarty. Each a portion of 50# paid by John Gray of the county of Caroline - sell 58 acres of land - which was purcased by David McCarty (deceased) by deed and recorded in the County of Caroline. 08 Sep 1800 John McCarty and wife Elizabeth sells 172 acres which John bought in 1796. 2. Shenandoah County, Virginia Abstracts of Wills, 1772-1850 By Amelia C. Gilreath If anyone has this book, I am looking for a will for Hensley Hutchison. He died 14 may 1819 I think in Shenandoah County. Maybe spelled Hutchinson. Also he is sometimes listed as Henry Hutchi(n)son. Daughters bible says Hensley very plainly. He was the father of Sarah Ann born 1784 and married John B Harry (many times transcribed as Harvey); Lydia born 1786 and Robert born 1790. There might have been more living children but these were listed in his daughter, Sarah Ann's bible. Thanks for any help. Betty Vaughn
