    2. Vashenan Listmates, Well, I think I have figured some of it out. John Hoover married Elizabeth Fravel, d/o Henry Fravel and Anna Keller Their son William Hoover married 12 April 1819 to Mary Magdalene Sheetz, d/o Jacob Sheetz and wife Eve. Their daughter Ann Hoover who was born 17 September 1820 married Uriah Foltz. She must have been their only child since she is the only one mentioned in the Will. I still would like to know more about the Foltz Plantation. Gloria

    1. [VASHENAN] Jacob Sheetz and wife Eve and their granddaughter Ann Hoover - VA
    2. Good Evening Vashenan Listmates, Anyone on the List have knowledge of the Hoover family near Columbia Furnace/ Woodstock that might be of help? We were reading the following Chancery record: Uriah Foltz and Ann VS Philip Sheetz et al 1847 - 018 The et al consisted of: Philip Sheetz in his own right, Catharine Sheetz widow of Mathias, his children Rebecca Hoover, wife of David Hoover, Joseph Sheetz, Elizabeth Sheetz, William Sheetz, Catharine Sheetz and infant children of Mathias Sheetz George and Joseph. Ann Hoover Foltz had been left a legacy of $1000 from her grandfather Jacob Sheetz in his 1827 Will and she was trying to collect her money after she became of age. Her Uncles Philip and Mathias Sheetz were to pay this legacy, each the sum of $500 when she reached the age of 21, $100 annually each until the whole sum was paid from the proceeds of the Sheetz Grist Mill but Mathias Sheetz died in 1833. Ann Hoover was never paid her legacy. What the Will doesn't state is who Ann's parents were. Which deceased daughter of Jacob Sheetz was Ann's mother and which Hoover was her father? Benjamin Hoover is somehow related as he swore to her being of the age of majority. The heirs in the Will are listed as follows: Eve Sheetz, Wife Philip Sheetz, Son Mathias Sheetz, Son George Sheetz, Son Joseph Sheetz, Son Ann Hoover, Granddaughter Also there is a reference in the Will to Jacob Sheetz owning several tracts of land, the one the Grist Mill, one the Gelmon tract and one the Foltz plantation. The Foltz tract touched the land of William Philips and others, I believe possibly George Shrum and Daniel Sheetz. Where is was the Foltz plantation located and who owns the land now? Ann Hoover married Uriah Foltz and how is he connected to this Foltz plantation? One of his other tracts of land was between Columbia Furnace and Woodstock and touched the land of Jacob Rinker, John Hoover, and John Gyer. Here is her obit: The Shenandoah Valley New Market, Virginia Vol. 96, No. 18 Thursday Evening, 5 May 1904 Page 3 DEATH OF MRS. ANNA FULTZ "Mrs. Anna Fultz, (nee Hoover), was born near Woodstock, Virginia, September 17, 1820. She was married to Mr. Uriah Fultz about the year 1840. She died in New Market, May 1, 1904; aged 83 years, 7 months, and 14 days. Soon after their marriage they moved to Rockbridge county, where they lived about fifteen years and where Mr. Fultz died, Dec. 22, 1857, leaving eight children, two sons and six daughters, all of whom are living, namely, Mr. Reuben T. Fultz, near Timberville; Mr. John W. Fultz, New Market; Mrs. Jacob Woods, Harrisonburg; Mrs. Andrew J. Bushong, Indiana; Mrs. John Fultz, near Hawkinstown; Mrs. J. Fred S. Good, New Market; Mrs. J. Frank Good, near New Market; Miss Kate Fultz, New Market, and with the exception of one, who is in the west, were present at the funeral. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren. After the death of Mr. Fultz the family removed to Shenandoah county where they have since resided, respectively, at Hawkinstown, Pine Forge, and New Market. At the death of Mr. Fultz the burden and responsibility of the family fell heavily upon the shoulders of Mrs. Fultz, and for nearly half a century she has devotedly spent her life in their interest. She was regarded by all who knew her as a most estimable lady, patient and kind and generous, especially to the poor and needy. Their home was always a most hospitable home. She was not a member of any church organization, but in her life there was manifested many of the Christian graces. She said she was willing and ready to die. We trust that the reward of Matthew 10, 40-42 and 25, 34-40 will be hers. The funeral services were conducted by the writer, assisted by Eld. B. W. Neff, in New Market, and the interment was in Cedar Grove Cemetery about three miles north of this place. The following were the pallbearers: Geo. A. Guard, Charles Kagey, C. White, M. F. Tusing, Geo. W. Kennedy, and Samuel Arehart. Among others who attended the funeral from a distance were the following: Mr. Lewis Fansler, of near Hawkinstown; Mr. and Mrs. John H. Hoover, of near Woodstock; her nephew Mr. Mark Fultz and son, of near Hamburg. The following lines give expression to the feelings of the family, and are herewith appended. R. D. Hottel (obit writer) Poem written by her daughter E. G. Good "Mother's hands are weary; fold them on her breast; they have been so busy, Let, ah, let them rest! Worn, and thin, and wrinkled; seamed with toil and care; Yet to all they've aided Beautiful and fair! Of their deeds so loving How those lines now speak; They have raised the fallen; comforted the weak; Toiled on, uncomplaining, with their work ne'er done, full of joy and gladness, Till their rest is won! Think how they have guided Tiny, toddling feet; Smoothed away all sorrow With their touch so sweet; Banished pain and sorrow; Closed at last the eyes Of her loved who'll greet her In "mansions in the skies!" Mother's hands are weary; Fold them on her breast; Dear old hands so feeble, They have earned their rest; God is waiting for her And he understands All the work for others Done by mother's hands! ------------------- Her daughter Amanda Foltz married Andrew Jackson Bushong, my husband's great grandfather. Jacob Bushong of the Battlefield paid for his school education as it is mentioned in his journal that he gave money to Elizabeth Woods for this purpose. Thanks, Gloria Bushong

    2. Gloria, I found the following on Klaus WUST's passing but I don't have anything on the other two researchers; but I am almost certain that I heard Henry Z. JONES, Jr. died just a couple of years ago. I am not sure about the status of Ralph CONNOR. Byline: THE WASHINGTON TIMES Klaus WUST, who spent the last 60 years of his life helping Germans and Americans to better understand each other, died May 6, after a prolonged period of failing health at Woodstock Memorial Hospital in Woodstock, Va. He was 77. So many of the faithful and knowledgeable are passing, more reason for the generations coming behind them to take an interest in preserving our "true" heritage. The old German dialect is no longer spoken by the masses even in Germany and it is hard to find those that are able to translate these old documents with complete accuracy. These men were connected to many of those able to translate with understanding and then published much that will go on for years. Also, in the Shenandoah Valley area is the name ANDRICK. Frederick ANDRICK's will probated in Shenandoah (Dunmore) County on 24 Nov 1772. As you know, when going through those old document books the Hs and As can also get confused so everything else has to line up too. Chocy

Thanks for thinking of me. Bushong Reunion coming up the weekend of the 1, 2, and 3rd October so I'll be up in New Market for that. Can't wait. Anyone with connections to the Bushongs are invited to come but you must let me know as it is catered by Shaffer's of Woodstock. Cost is $45 per person and includes entrance in to the Battlefield, lunch on Saturday, dinner on Saturday night and lunch on Sunday plus some really great entertainment with a movie, play, and musical presentation of Civil War era music presented by 'Professor" and Mrs. Keith Gibson. 1. [VASHENAN] HITE and other German Families
    2. Gloria, Thank you for your posting expressing the "reality" of things encountered in researching, especially our Swiss and German and Palentine ancestors. I am a 7th great granddaughter of Jost HITE and the 8th great granddaughter of Johannes and Anna Magdalena HITE, his parents. Henry Z. JONES, Ralph CONNOR and Klaus WUST formed a great team of researchers that produced much true "factual" information regarding these ancestors especially back in the homeland where they traveled and viewed many documents. Acutually, JONES-WUST traveled abroad while CONNER dug in Pennsylvania. As Gloria stated and most will support, NEVER trust the spelling of a Germanic name. Always remember that while the English were the "scribes" and writing documents in English (this was a colony of Great Britain), the Germans were reading, writing and specking their native language while becoming and being bilingual. The Germans held on to their culture for a number of generations going forward in time. Some signed documents with a German signature; but many others just used a mark, thus, by some, being labeled illiterate which was NOT the case. I would like to share a part of the following as an example of what this great team of researchers found out about my HITE family which could apply to any German-Swiss-Palentine family from the region. 1. Johannes HITE was a butcher; but he also was also a Lutheran church warden, civic leader and landowner of Bonfeld. There is even a plot in the records of his property at Bonfeld. Description of his holdings: one two story house include a barn; two fields of 1, 8 acres; 2 meadow consisting of 2152 square yards and a garden containing 538 square yards. 2. At Bonfeld, Heilbronn, Baden-Wuerttenberg, Germany, on 6 Mar 1679 he married for the first time a DEVOTE Catholic, Anna Magdalena. Anna Magdalena HITE would remain a Catholic all her life. When she passed away, Johannes HITE sent for a Catholic priest to give her a proper Catholic burial. 3. About two years later, Johannes HITE married the widow, Anna Marie SCHULTZE. They also left Bonfeld; but no evidence has yet to be found that Johannes HITE made it to the American shores; but their is evidence that Anna Marie, his second wife did make it to America as well as some children. 4. Back to the Lutheran Church at Bonfeld where Johannes HITE was a church warden. Much of what the team of reachers found was in the very records of this church. Among which was found a list that the pastor kept of those from Bonfeld that left for America over a few years span. These were not just church members but also other Bonfeld citizens. Listed among them was a Anabaptist (Mennonites) named NEFF; Joh. Jacob ROTH, a weaver; Heinrich FUNCK and his brother, Martin FUNCK. (Shenandoah Valley folks) While many "true" facts are now available because of JONES-WUST efforts, much of the myths continue to circulate, in my opinion the worst one is that Jost HITE was married to DUBOIS when beyond a shadow of a doubt he was married to Anna MERKLE and the MERKLE family is well document in the Bonfeld Lutheran Church records. While all the MERKLE family did not come all together at once, they did come to America and some are also among those Shenandoah Valley folks. Anyway, happy hunting and back to my research which is lagging! Chocy

    1. [VASHENAN] Hite, Yowell, Spitler, Rothgeb, Bushong, Shenandoah & Page Counties
    2. Afternoon Vashenan Listmates, We found this obit for Martin Hite. He is the son of David Hite and Susannah Spitler. His linage begins in Chester County, Pennsylvania then down to Shenandoah County and then he went over to Page County. He married Isabelle Yowell. The Yowell family married in to the Rothgeb family. Emma Belle Rothgeb, whose parents were John W. Rothgeb and Pamela V. Yowell, married Jacob Edgar Bushong, son of Jacob Bushong and Sarah Strickler of the New Market Battlefield family. See my BOSCHONG Archives for December 2009, April 2010, September 2009, and December 2004 for more mentions of Yowell and July 2010, August 2009, October 2009 and April 2007 for mention of Hite. ------------------- The Shenandoah Herald Friday, 20 January 1905 Page 3, Column 3 MARTIN HITE IS DEAD IN PAGE COUNTY Martin Hite, one of the oldest farmers of Page County, died suddenly at his home, one mile east of Luray, last Thursday morning, aged 87 years. Mr. Hite had been in feeble health for several years though his death was very unexpected. He was the owner to the celebrated Hite Lithia Spring of that county, and his home was visited each year by many summer boarders. Mr. Hite was the father of Mr. George Hite who lived about one mile west of Woodstock. ---------------------- Now I don't know if this Martin Hite is related to Josh Hite or the Yowell family married in to the Bushongs, but we have a story to tell about Josh Hite that you might find interesting. Oral history of a family is not always 100 per cent correct. Some time ago, I attended a Genealogical Seminar over in Largo, Florida with the well known Hank Jones of California who is an expert on Palatine research, who told the story about Josh Hite and how oral history becomes corrupted. Hank explained it like this. Remember the old gossip game we used to play as kids, where you sit in a circle and whisper something to the person on the left of you, it goes around the circle, whispered in the next ear and eventually comes out at the person on your right as something totally different then what you whispered in that first ear. That's how family stories evolve. Hank said that while researching Josh Hite he was told, according to the Virginia descendants, Josh Hite was a Alsatian Baron who came here as a wealthy man on his own ships filled with money. Well, Hank Jones found out in person, through in depth research in the village in Europe that Josh Hite came from, that Josh Hite did come here as an immigrant, but he was the son of a butcher and chicken plucker in a little village, and after he reached these shores in New York, went to Pennsylvania. Then Jost Hite did receive a land grant in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Because of the large amount of land he received, he would have been considered a land baron to some and two generations later, that heir owned several ships, the Friendship and Swift.. So you can see how family stories get twisted around and the generations get messed up. 99.99 per cent of the Palatine immigrants came here as peasants with no money because they were taxed to death in their journey as they hit the various ports. By the time they reached this country, they had very little money. Hank Jones is very knowledgeable about genealogy and well respected in the genealogical field worldwide. He has done a lot of Palatine research in Europe and published books about it so check him out. I have been to many seminar's where I have learned very little, but did learn a few new things at this one, OR had some of my own genealogical thoughts reinforced. One thought is that the German naming system that old genealogist are clinging to so strongly is definitely not true in many instances. It is just a place to start if you know nothing about your family but may prove incorrect, and you should be willing to be open to it not proving true. As you all well know, I have taken this stance for many years, criticized highly for it, but this is the first time that a highly respected researcher and speaker in the genealogical field has expressed my same thoughts. Yeah! ----------------------- Will Records of Shenandoah County, Virginia 1771-1791 Will Records of Shenandoah County, Virginia Book A OSPage: 467 Name: Abraham. "This day Moses Walton and John Fox well known to the Court to be credible persons came into Court and being sworn in due form of law declared that they are well acquainted with Sarah Bushong whose name is signed to an asignment of Land Warrant No. 11--5-- for one hundred and sixty acres of land: that they know the said Sarah to be the heir at Law and the only surviving heir at law of John Bushong and that the said Sarah had attained the age of twenty one years at the time of executing the said asignment." SOURCE: Page County Virginia Minute Book 5, 1855-1861 (Reel 20) Virginia State Archives, Richmond, Virginia Page 72 and 73 Entry dated 25 February 1856 Well, This is an interesting document. Sine Sarah was very very young when her father John Bushong died in 1839 and she went to live with relatives in Page County, evidently John Fox and his wife Christina (Catharine's daughter} never told Sarah Bushong that she had older half brothers and sisters, John, William, Jacob, Andrew, Elizabeth, Susannah and Mary Bushong over in Shenandoah County. Sarah was so young when her father and mother died that she might not have remembered them. The warrant number was not clear. We have had the state archives searched and the Deed book for Page County searched but so far have not found anything on the 160 acres. We will continue looking for this. ------ Shenandoah County Virginia Marriage Bonds 1772-1850 Groom: John Bushong Bride: Magdaline Bozeman Date applied for bond: 29 August 1803 Bondsman: Peter Bushong Magdaline Bozeman was the daughter of William Bauserman Sr. and Susannah Golladay. ------- Shenandoah County Marriage Bonds issued 25 December 1829: Lucy Bushong, daughter of John Bushong and William Brinker son of Aaron Hawkins Sr. and Barbara Brinker. >From Shenandoah County Ministers Returns: Married by Rev. Jackson, where Mr. Hottel and Mr. John Furr are running a stave mill. Mr. Hottel was engaged in running the engine. About 3 o'clock the governor belt broke and while he was endeavoring to stop the engine, a pulley flew off of the shafting strinking him on the back part of his head, crushing the skull and rendering him unconscious. Dr. Koontz was immediately summoned but found Mr. Hottel in such a serious condition that he could render but little medical aid until the patient was removed to Mt. Jackson. he was carried to his home, in Mt. Jackson, on a stretcher, arriving about 11 o'clock Wednesday night. Dr. Bruin, of Strasburg, and Dr. Foley were called on consultation with Dr. Koontz and at 4 o'clock Thursday morning the physicians performed an operation to relieve the pressure from the brain. About six hours after the operation Mr. Hottel revived into a semi-conscious condition for a few minutes and then passed into an unconscious state in which he still remained at 9 o'clock Thursday evening. But little hope is entertained by the attending physicians of his recovery. Mr. Hottel is one of the best known men in the Valley, he is about 45 years old, married, and a son of the late Jacob Hottle, who lived at the Stonewall Mill, near Pugh's Run, where he was born and raised. 3. Gloria and listmates-   I appreciate the interesting information on Geo.Shaffer Jr.'s will. Another little piece of the Shaffer family puzzle.   Just to clear up a little bit of confusion on Geo. Sr.'s children. There were 13 children total and 12 that survived infancy. The research I have was done by Helen Hooke of Harrisonburg, Va. She was the grgranddaughter of Geo., granddaughter of Malinda Shaffer Lucas, daughter of Geo. Lester Lucas. I was told she was very meticulous with her research so I am confident that the following information is accurate.   Children of George and Margaret Shaffer:   1. Lydia Ann     b.1858 2. Sarah Florence "Josie"  b.1861    (I have no idea why she was called Josie) 3. Mary Frances Josephine  b. 1862 4. George Jr.   b. 1863  ( I show his birthdate as 18 Aug 1863) 5. Malinda Katorah "Torie"  b. 1866 6. Emma Melichar   b. 1867 7. Caspar Eugene  b. 1869  d. 1883 8. Luther Milton  b. 1871 9. Avia Eudorah  b. 1873  d. 1874 10. Valley Theodoria  b. 1881   Correction to the census info: George's brother John was John Randolph and he has descendants still in the valley.   Thanks again for this tidbit. I love seeing these kinds of info and always appreciate it when anyone wants to share. 3. When I answered earlier, I was about half asleep and messed up the dates. The township system came in with the 1870 Constitution, though President Grant had apparently authorized its use earlier. The townships, similar to what they had in NY, coincided with the Magisterial Districts. In 1874, that constitution was amended by the General Assembly to go back to the Magisterial Districts, though with 3 JPs per district in addition to a Supervisor. So, the Supervisor thing hung around for a long time, and VA never again had Magistrates in the old (pre-1864) sense. I don't know how the new precincts matched up with the old ones (usually 2 per district pre-war). In 1860 most designations were 'Districts' which corresponded to a Post Office of the same name: Columbia Furnace, Liberty Furnace, Edinburg, Lantz's Mill, Woodstock. The exception was Powels [sic] Fort which had no label. One household there showed Seven Fountains PO; the other, Edinburg. In 1870 the three geographic areas where twelve of my families lived were all designated 'Townships': Madison, Stonewall, and Johnson [sic]. In three cases, the old PO name had been written in, but was struck out and replaced with 'Edinburg'. In 1880 Madison and Davis appear as 'Townships'. Six households were in 'Stonewall Dist'. Another was listed in 'Stonewall', without designation. In 1900 enumerator R. L. Lambert noted 'Madison District (west part)'; Samuel Coverston recorded 'Johnston Township'; Henry B. Burner classified Stonewall a 'Township' (one household indicated within Woodstock); while Henry and Samuel Hounshell wrote 'Stonewall Dist (part of)'. In 1910 my one household remaining in Shenandoah County lived in 'Stonewall Magisterial Dist (part of)'. In 1920 the record shows 'Stonewall Dist'. So looking at my sample, the 'Township' designation appears in 1870 and persists in some instances through 1900. One curiosity I did observe within ancestry.com data some time back was reference to Stonewall as 'St. Onewall'. ... High today of 96 with heat index of 105 and we know that a lot of you are experiencing the same thing. I hate to even think what my electric bill will be this month. We have a question which may seem dumb to some. We know that Virginia is different then a lot of the other states in their governing designation of districts, counties, cities and towns. We know there are 40 Independent cities surrounded by a county but not part of, for instance Staunton is an Independent City and not part of Augusta County, we know there are Mag. Districts within the counties, for instance Ashby, Stonewall, Madison, etc. and we know there are towns which are part of the county where they are located........ But we are seeing on the census records on Ancestry a designation of township. I didn't think that Virginia had townships. Can someone explain what this means? Did someone just make a mistake and it should be District not Township? Or are there actually townships?
