Penry, publishers and editors; July 16, 1861, C. Killmer and O.D. Avaline, publishers and editors; and December 3, 1861, O.D. Avaline became sole proprietor. Avaline died, December 26, 1863; Mrs. Avaline continued the paper, with P.J. Hopper as editor. On January 2, 1864, the paper was changed to a weekly, under its present name, Folsom Telegraph. On April 15, 1865, P.J. Hopper purchased the paper, and became editor and publisher. Hopper leased the paper, in 1874, to J.F. Howe, and in December, 1877, sold to W.W. The politics of the Telegraph were Democratic, until January 1, 1863; from that time to the present they have been Republican. -------------------------------------------- TO BE CONTINUED: Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

AND MRS. THEOPHOLIS FRAVEL Dr. T. Fravel, who was a son of Abraham Fravel and was born in this place 8th April 1824, died at his home in Westville, Indiana, on Sunday evening, 7th January. Doctor Fravel had made a professional call but remained for the most part of the day at home. He was lying on a couch talking to Mrs. Fravel. Their conversation was cheerful in tone as each one spoke of feeling unusually well. Without warning, Dr. Fravel with a few gasps became unconscious, and they being alone, Mrs. Fravel ran out for assistance. On her return, Mrs. Fravel sorrowfully knelt by the side of his courch and placing her hand on her husband's face, asked, in a dazed manner if he had left her. With that she sank in the chair and her spirit fled, probably not a minute later than had that of her partner of so many years. Dr. Fravel occupied a prominent position in the town in which he lived. For twenty-four years he had been Superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School. His father, at the time he started West, was a prominent member of the Methodist church, in this place. Dr. Frvel from the account before us had a large relationship in Indiana and Illinois. Two of his sisters reside in Washington. He had many relatives in this county. -------- The Marble Rock Weekly Marble Rock, Iowa 18 January 1900 Page 2, Column 4 MINOR NEWS ITEMS FOR THE WEEK ENDING 13 JANUARY Dr. Theophilus Fravel and his wife, an aged couple, died nearly at the same time in Westville, Indiana. ----- TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTION Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte County, Indiana MARY L. 2. CONTINUATION OF PART 2 OF 9 Any additions or corrections are appreciated ------------------------- CHILDREN OF JOHN B. FRAVEL JR. & SOPHIA FRAVEL (COUSINS) NOTE: Theophilus Fravel was difficult to research and I still cannot figure out the birth of his children Edna and Edward Fravel. Were they twins? Only one in census in 1870, a female born June 1870, and then a male in 1880 census as a ten year old, also born 1870. Edward appears to be a son of Theophilus and Clara. A female child named Edna Pelham Fravel is recorded in the birth records of Greene County, Ohio for 1 June 1870 although the 1870 census with her parents states May. She only appears in two census records with her father. Edward never does appear in any. The Pelham grandparents seem to be caring for the son Edward. Edward Fravel is living as a ten year old in his Pelham grandparents household in 1880. I'm pretty sure he is the son of Clara and Theophilus but two Fravel brothers married two Pelham sisters which confuses the issue greatly. I could not find Edward in any census except the 1880 census so he must have died after that census possibly of consumption as did his mother. The 1900 census states that Theophilus Fravel only had 1 child and 1 living which would be Edna so what about Edward???? 1. THEOPHILUS A. Jackson, Shenandoah County, Virginia Died: 14 May 1885, La Porte County, Indiana Married: 18 January 1838 to Cousin JOHN B. FRAVEL JR. Burial: Patton Cemetery, La Porte County, Indiana JOHN B. FRAVEL JR., son of John B. Fravel Sr. & Mary Ann Gregory Born: 1814, Carolina Died: 1 March 1876, La Porte County, Indiana Members of First Methodist Church, La Porte County, Indiana --------- Source: History of the Descendants of John Hottel, by Rev W.D. Huddle B.S. and Lulu May Huddle taken from William Fravel Genealogy. John Bunyan Fravel Jr. in 1826, as young as he was, John Bunyan Fravel pushed out into the world for himself and learning the trade of Copper and tinsmith in his native state he journeyed to Maryland, living in that state for a short time. He then went to Woodstock, Virginia, and assisted Abraham Fravel in a store. In April 1835, he accompanied Abraham Fravel's family to Laporte, Indiana, and there married his oldest daughter, Sophia E. With the exception of one year in South Bend, Indiana, he spent the remainder of his life in LaPorte, Indiana. His educational advantages were limited, but his aptitude, energy and industry were such that he was a well educated man, noted for his general intelligence and ease and correctness of expression both with tongue and pen. He was a public spirited citizen and bore an active part in all enterprises of interest to the people. Though born and reared in a slave state, he was an anti-slavery man and became a Republican in Politics on the organization of the party. he was one of the leading merchants of LaPorte, a prominent member of the Masonic fraternity and in 1840 held the office of school commissioner of the county, the duties of which office he discharged with ability and success. While at the breakfast table one morning he was stricken with paralysis which terminated his life in a few hours. NOTE: Since he was born in 1814, we don't believe for a minute that John Bunyan Fravel Jr. set out in the world in 1826 at the age of 12 years entirely on his own. He had to have a Guardian since his father died when he was very young and was probably ordered to be bind out to learn the above trades when the family was still living in the Carolinas. Hopefully someday someone will run across the county and court proceedings. --- La Porte County Indiana Marriages John B. Fravel to Sophia E. 2. Howard, I just ran across this in my Drafts Folder. I guess I had planned to add more to it. I'll forward it to you anyway. Perhaps you have additional information now. Shirley Edillon I think that Elizabeth Stomboch/Stamback/Stombock etc. was the sister of Martin Stumboch. Martin Stombock born 1774 is my ancestor. 1. [VASHENAN] Will for Charles William Lewis in San Diego, California
    2. Good Evening Vashenan Listmates, Does anyone on this List live in San Diego, California? If so, I need a huge favor. There is a Will in the county courthouse or city courthouse if they are separate for Charles William Lewis that was probated 13 March 1871. All I need is for someone to go to the courthouse, look in the Will book and make a list of the heirs, if there are any. I am hoping that the Will will name a wife named Martha or Mattie (maiden name Fravel) who was born in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Thanks, Gloria Bushong

    1. Re: [VASHENAN] Question about the surname Ruby and Rudy, Shenandoah County, VA
    2. Gloria, I have the book: "Casper RADER-Johan Casper ROTTER 1732-1812" by James Lee RADER 2006 This Wythe County, Virginia RADER was first found in 1765 in Bethel Twp., Lancaster County (now Lebanon County), Pennsylvania and as you said, ended up with land at Cove, Wythe County, Virginia and passing away at Wythville. He is buried at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Jim RADER has done a nice job on this book and has collected almost everything he can on the RADER line. First gathering together a family and then connecting them to married family groups is absolutely necessary and while I do not connect to anyone in Jim RADER's book much of the information does follow the same patterns as mine. As we all know, those of us that have been at this for a long time, sometimes it only takes one FACT to connect it all together to the point of provability. The problem among RITTER-RADER-RETTER-and so forth is the same as most Germanic surnames, especially those that lived for any time in the Shenandoah Valley area, as you well know the spellings are SO varied. As to the RUDY-REEDY issue, I started to check them out to see if I could help you with your question concerning RUBY-RUDY. Then I had to lay down for awhile, so did not finish the task. YOUR QUESTION Correct me if I am misinterpreting what you say that Amelia Gilbreath says in her book: MY ANSWER Amelia GILREATH, by her index listing acknowledges that the document on that page had the same person, Elizabeth RUDY/REEDY written both ways. At that point it is up to the researcher to determine if the family was one in the same or not. YOUR QUESTION That the Name Rudy and Reedy are one and the same family because in the Deed records when they wrote the name Rudy someone interpreted the u that a clerk wrote in the Deed book to be two ee's and vice versa? MY ANSWER This may be very true, I am not familiar with these families; I am only trying to put forth the record as presented so that a determination would be easier to make, if at all possible. Amelia GILREATH, in her index for Volume 2 (after RUDDELL) RUDY, REEDY, Eliz. 98, 99 John Barnhard 98 Philip 98 (going to the abstracted text of the document) Page 98 --------------Philip RUDY and Elizabeth his wife------------------(so forth as I wrote previously) Signed by: ----------------Elisabeth "X" REEDY. THEN I went to the Index of Volume 3, 1792-1799 (after REED) REEDY, READEA, Augustine 60, 83, 108, 127, 199 Barnhard 83 Elizabeth 83, 108 Jemima (Mima) 96, 115, 127 John Barnard 108 Philip 60, 83, 108, 115, 127 REEDY, RUDY, Jacob 15 (listings also for RODDY) RUBY, Barbara-Catharine-Elizabeth-Henry-Jacob-John 155, 156 THEN after I wrote you I went to Frederick County which is where anything before 1772 would be located and found for the years 1743-1765 no spelling of RUDY; but found only REEDY. 1762 Jacob and Barbara MILLER of Woodstock Tenure of Property to Barned REEDY to lease Lot No. 109 on the east side of King Street in Woodstock. 1763 Jacob and Catherine PASENGER of Augusta County sold to Peter UPP Lot No. 110 in Woodstock. Stated that lot was near the lots of Jacob MILLER and Barnaby REEDY on east side of King Street in Woodstock. 1764 John Barnard REEDY sells Lot No. 109 (above mentioned) to Adam TURTINE. Signed by John B. REEDY Shenandoah Will Book L Page 276 Shows Augustine REEDY Son: John REEDY --------------------------------and so forth all REEDY. The will of Augustine REEDY written 27 Dec 1820 and probated on 8 Jan 1821gives only the spelling of REEDY mentioning his son John and daughter Elizabeth the wife of George KOONTZ and daughter Polly, wife of George GRANDSTAF. Anyhow, guess I should not have tried to tackle this one as I am not familiar with RUDY-RUBY and I was thinking I could find via the index if the same people had their names spelled differently and that might help you determine in your own research if you have one family or two different families with of course the REEDY surname got thrown in to to the mix. 1. Re: [VASHENAN] Question about the surname Ruby and Rudy, Shenandoah County, VA
    2. Hi Chocy, Correct me if I am misinterpreting what you say that Amelia Gilbreath says in her book: That the Name Rudy and Reedy are one and the same family because in the Deed records when they wrote the name Rudy someone interpreted the u that a clerk wrote in the Deed book to be two ee's and vice versa? Maybe I should explain my curiosity about the Rudy and Ruby name being possibly the same. It came about because of the following lineage as we were wondering if the Ruby below could really be Rudy since that name was in the family more prominently then Ruby. Hmmmmmmmmm. John Martin Foltz Daniel Foltz and Magdalene Ruby John Foltz and Mary Margaret Pence Uriah Foltz and Ann Hoover, whose grandparents were John Hoover and Elizabeth Bushong Amanda Foltz and Andrew Jackson Bushong, s/o of Jacob and Elizabeth Interestingly enough, I have been trying to track down the John Bushong Jr. Bible that was bought way back at an estate sale in April 1796 in Shenandoah County by Philip Redy. This could be Reedy or Rudy. ------------------------- On another note, while searching for the name Rudy and Ruby in Circuit Court records of Virginia, I found a group of people that had come from Shenandoah, Rockingham, and Augusta County to Tazewell County early on (probably between 1810 and 1830). I know that the Bosang and Bushong families had come down to Pulaski, Wythe, Montgomery, Washington, and Tazewell counties about that time but really never looked to see who else was there from Shenandoah and surround area. Some of the names besides the Bosang and Bushongs are Ritter, Brew/Brugh/Brough, Sitz, Fox, Cline, Greever, Gaw, Repass, Rudy, Ritter, Hedrick, Jenkins, Conley, and many more so if you are missing a relative, you might want to take a look there. Many of these names married in to the Bosang and Bushong families and their collateral lines. A guy by the name of Gaspar Ritter and his two sons John and Peter Ritter probably came from, I am guessing either Augusta or Shenandoah circa 1800-1830 since the names associated with them were from these two counties and owned two tracts of land, one for 100 acres and one for 47 acres and a third tract son Peter Ritter was partners with Philip Greever, Jacob Rudy, George Rudy, Michael Brough, Jacob Spracher which contained 2400 acres on Clinch mountain near Burkes Gardens (Tazewell County). By 1837, after Peter Ritter died, his brother John and Peter's heirs petitioned the court to divide up the tracts in to equal shares for all. Of course the widow of Peter Ritter named Margaret, wanted her 1/3 Dower in the lands which she got. All of them got a sizeable chunk of land from the division. Peter and Margaret Ritter's children were John N. Ritter, Adam J. Ritter, and George P. Ritter and at the time they were infant heirs with a guardian ad litem appointed, a relative named George S. Ritter. This is why it is so important when doing genealogy to know all of the lines married into the family since you never know when they might intersect again either going forward or backwards. ------------------------ Tabor Reformed Church (Dauphin County, PA) Historical Note: The Church was located in the Borough of Lebanon, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. 1. Re: [VASHENAN] Question about the surname Ruby and Rudy, Shenandoah County, VA
    2. Gloria, Looking at the index of Volume 2, Shenandoah Deed-GILREATH, there appears a recognition from Amelia, in her work, that RUDY and REEDY are corruptions of each other for the years abstracted. The abstract version: 30 Jul 1789 Between Philip RUDY and Elizabeth his wife, eldest son and heir at law of John Bernhard RUDY, deceased to Augustine REEDY----------tract of land near Woodstock ----143 acres ---- formerly granted John Bernhard RUDY ---- 4 Jun 1777 ---- that part thereof which is hereby conveyed to said Augustine REEDY is bounded according to a division Survey thereby made --- corner to Adam FUNK and Abraham MILLER ---- containing 72 acres --- Signed by: _______(German signature) Elisabeth (X) REEDY Witnesses: none listed Recorded: 30 July 1789 In this volume only, the other close surname to the RUBY vs RUDY would be Charles RODDY where he, Charles RODDY is mentioned with having a certain outlot in Woodstock.---1789 Nothing in this volume for the years 1784-1792 that shows the spelling of RUBY. I have Mary "Polly" RUDY/REEDY listed in my database as a daughter of Augustine RUDY/REEDY she married in 1810 and her marriage bond to George "Major" GRANDSTAFF shows the spelling of her name as Polly RUDY daughter of Augustine. While this does not answer your question as to the corruption between RUBY and RUDY (during this time frame of deeds, in Shenandoah County), it does show a corruption between RUDY and REEDY, at this time in history.

    1. Re: [VASHENAN] Question about the surname Ruby and Rudy, Shenandoah County, VA
    2. Hi Ken, With due respect, your comparison is too recent. You need to look further back. I was studying the Rudy and Ruby surnames back in the 1700's, and I think at one time they may have been the same family. Possibly there was a difference of opinion within the early family or even just a mistake when writing the name on the ship manifest or even in a court record once they arrived and it stuck. Sort of what happened with the Bushong who became a Bosang coming in to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in the 1700's and then moving in to Virginia. One and the same family. The Rudy's and the Ruby's both have ties in to the early Bushong families and collateral lines in the same areas of the country starting in York and Lancaster County Pennsylvania, and moving down in to Shenandoah County, Virginia and beyond. It would be interesting to see what DNA testing would disclose. Anyone on this List who knows some of these people, need to suggest the testing. Gloria

    1. [VASHENAN] Ann Hoover, d/o William Hoover and Mary Magdalene Sheetz, Virginia
    2. Good Afternoon Vashenan Listmates, We are always appreciate of input from Listmates so don't ever be shy about commenting. A Listmate pointed out that you must beware when assuming, when reading Chancery Records and she is correct. Reference was to the statement about Ann Hoover, we believed was the only child of William Hoover and Mary Magdalene Sheetz. We present the following information for her and you which we probably should have posted when we did the other post. All of us can always learn from others that's for sure. Yes, you must always beware when reading chancery records and yes, her grandfather was trying to protect his daughter Mary Magdalene Sheetz deceased's interest for his granddaughter Ann Hoover in his Estate. To come to the conclusion we reached, we cross checked all other records pertaining thereof to substantiate what I think to be true. In this particular case, Ann Hoover, was the only child of this couple who lived passed infancy and to adulthood. But we are always open to correction if we are found to be wrong. We base this on the following evidence: 1. Her parents William Hoover and Mary Magdalene Sheetz marriage was in 1819. Shenandoah County Marriage Bonds - 1772 - 1850 Page 179 William Hoover and Polly Sheetz 12 April 1819 Bondsman: Jacob Sheetz {Her Father} ----------------------- 2. Their daughter Ann Hoover was born 17 September 1820 near Woodstock. ------------------------ 3. We believe that Mary Magdalene Sheetz died when Ann was very small, possibly after giving birth to her. -------------------------- 4. William Hoover died in February 1827 and his only daughter was appointed a Guardian: Records of Indenture and Guardianship in Shenandoah County, Virginia 1772- 1831 Extracted from the Minutes of the Circuit Court By Daniel W. Bly 1985 Minute Book 1826 - 1830 13 August 1827 - Daniel Hisey is appointed guardian to Anna Hoover, orphan of William. If there had been other children they also would have been named in this minute book since there was only a span of 8 years between the time of William Hoover's marriage and time of his death so any other children by him, would have been named as infants and appointed Guardians. No adult children here. Daniel Hisey, the Guardian of Anna/Ann Hoover was married to Margaret Hoover, sister of William Hoover Shenandoah County Marriages Daniel Hisey to Margaret Hoover 29 November 1826 ---------------------------- 5. Ann Hoover, born 1820, was a mere child of about 6 years of age, when her grandfather Jacob Sheetz wrote his 1827 Will with codicil in 1828. ------------------------------- 6. I have found no evidence that William Hoover's wife Mary Magdalene "Polly" Sheetz was alive at the time of her husband's death in 1827 and believe she died before him, thus not named in her father Jacob Sheetz Will which was also written in 1827. -------------------------------- I have to laugh at Ann/Anna Hoover Foltz and admire her greatly. Shortly after her marriage, she and husband Uriah Foltz moved to Rockbridge County and settled in to a very comfortable home farm right off of the Lee Highway but their property went up to and across the Lee Highway. There is a red barn that you can see on a hill near the highway. Uriah put in a claim when they were building the highway for damages to his property and was reimbursed. A family story goes that brother Isaac Foltz living in Shenandoah County came to visit, liked the home and farm so much that he talked his brother Uriah into trading homes with him. Before the transaction could be completed, Uriah up and dies in 1857. Ann was left to raise a large family of eight children, she never married again, she moved back to Shenandoah County from Rockbridge County with her children after burying her husband Uriah Foltz/Fultz in Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church on the Lee Highway near Rauphine/Steele's Tavern and selling the home place to her husband's brother Isaac Foltz. The 1900 census declared that she was indeed a Capitalist. Love that woman! The Fultz home in Rockbridge County VA is on the National Registry of Historic Places.. It had a name but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called and the computer with that information crashed some time ago. Russell and I visited this home and the owners graciously showed us through so that we could see it and take pictures. The Foltz family owned homes in Shenandoah County and Rockbridge County. This very Saturday the descendants of the Foltz/Fultz family of Shenandoah County are holding the Foltz/Fultz Reunion nearby at Cherry Grove Farm near Fairfield on the Lee Highway, owned by a Foltz/Fultz descendant Jim Alexander. Wish I were there. Russell and I have attended in the past and greatly enjoyed the family. Uriah Foltz/Fultz Born: 29 December 1815, Near Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Virginia Married: 25 October 1841, Shenandoah County, VA to Ann Hoover Died: 22 December 1857, Rockbridge County, VA with burial at Mt.
