In fact, as soon as I hit "send", I knew you had the 1783 Heads of families list. You're looking at Richard Branham's List which is gonna probably be Luray and Marksville Districts of present day Page County. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tom Pierce" <tvpierce@windstream.net> To: <vashenan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 11, 2010 5:21 PM Subject: Re: [VASHENAN] First census of the U.S. Shenandoah County > You likely have the 1783 census. Hello List, Browntown VA Boyd family. Can anyone connect with my family of Boyds? I don't have very much on the Boyds who left the Warren Co., VA area. Obiturary-In 1891-Warren Co.,VA, Mr. William Boyd, brother of Henry P. and Stephen D. Boyd, and father of Henry P. Jr., and A.O.Boyd, of Kansas City, MO, and the late William Boyd, banker of Decatur, Illinois. Of the two surviving sons, only Henry Prather .Jr., was with his father in his last hours. William was born October 20, 1805, and interred in the Boyd family graveyard near Browntown. Obituary-Henry Prather Boyd died at the residence of Col. Lloyd T. Jennings, about one mile from his own home, in Warren Co.,VA on Wednesday, February 28, 1894, aged 65y, and 17days. Son of Col. John and Frances Boyd, born at the old Boyd homestead about 6 miles S of Front Royal, was the youngest of 13 children, and a brother of our townsman, Steven Decatur Boyd. In youth he joined Methodist Episcopal Church. He lost his father when he was 5 years old. His mother Frances died in 1871, aged 86 years. He was married twice, his first wife, Miss Carrie Woodward (daughter of Maj William Woodward) only survived her marriage about 4 ½ months; his second marriage was (since the war) to Miss Laura O. King, daughter of Col..Issac Newton King, of Front Royal, he was again bereaved of his wife. He was at the battle of Bull Run and Manassas. Was carried to the hospital at Vienna, VA from the battlefield, where he was found by his brother James almost in a dying condition, who removed him to a private house nearby and afterwards to Front Royal. He rejoined the army and joined Mosby’s command. Appreciate any information. Browntown VA Boyd family. Louise Henry :
First of all, Miriam, there was no Shenandoah Co. in 1700. The area that is now Shenandoah was part of Spotsylvania from 1720 to 1734. AFter that it was a part of Orange Co. The part of Orange west of the Blue Ridge later was cut off and became Augusta and Frederick counties in the 1740s and in 1753 the area that became Shenandoah was wholly in old Frederick county. Shenandoah Co. itself was established in 1772. There was no federal census before 1790. What you are thinking of are tax records. A list of tax payers is available for 1783 and another for 1785. I have a sheet in my file "First Census of the United States." This was copied at the library or LDS. And I can't figure out if is1700. When I go online for the 1700 Virginia census I can not find Shenandoah County. I do have the 1785 and this is not it. Across the top if Name of Head of Family White Black I am looking at page 66, List of Alex's Hite My families are: Kiblinger and Prince. I want to be certain this is 1700 before I put that information in my genealogy records. thank you, Mariam

Dear List: Could anyone do a look-up for me if they have Amelia Gilreath's deed books? I am searching for information on John Boyd and found that reference is made to in Shenandoah Deed Bk I-61-1792 that mentions Benjamin Boyd, Elenor, w= ife, John, son and Israel Prather. John Boyd,Shenandoah Deed Bk., X 188-1813. I don't know if Deed would give more information or not. Appreciate any help. Louise Henry
Hi I need to get a copy of the original of this church's record. Surely it is on microfilm somewhere or on paper Barbara Southern California
Larry and Listmates, Here is something to consider.......... I'm am not willing yet to concede that Henry or John M. Polk were base-born based on a marriage record where the father is not named. Many men died or took off while their wives were pregnant and the women remarried and the kid never knew who his real father was. Never assume anything.........find a document........there is always a paper trail. You just have to know where to look. ---------------- Vann says: "Henry Polk resided with the family of John and Christina Ryman at the time of the 1850 Census. There may have been some relationship of Henry to 12 year old John M Polk in dwelling 1144. They are the only two individuals with the surname Polk in this immediate area. When John married he did not list the name of his father. He indicates that his mothers name was Rebecca. This was a rather common occurrance for base-born children. There is no evidence that Henry was the father of John, however, it does pose an interesting question." ------------------- I'm sorry, no disrespect intended, but I don't believe that the above is a question that should even be considered. Henry Polk born circa 1826 would have been 13 years old when he fathered John M. Polk. I believe John born circa 1837 is his youngest brother or half-brother. I believe they also had a sister named Rosannah born 1831 and possibly a brother named Philip Polk. One of two things happened to leave these two boys with family members. Either most of the family died in one of the epidemics of Typhoid, Cholera, or Smallpox that was going around between 1835-38 in Shenandoah County or the man of the house went off and left the family and died or the family left the area with the older children, leaving the two youngest behind, to be sent for later and something happened and they were never sent for. In the 1830 Federal Census there is the following family which may be the family of Henry and John M. Polk. 1830 Federal Census: Virginia Western District, Shenandoah County Page 136 W. T. Allen, Enumerator JOHN POKE {POLK} 1 male under 5 years of age {Henry Polk} 1 male 5 and under 10 years of age 1 male 15 and under 20 years of age 1 male 40 and under 50 years of age {Head of Household John Polk} 1 female under 5 years of age 1 female 5 and under 10 years of age 2 females 10 and under 15 years of age 1 female 30 and under 40 years of age Since Rosannah Polk was not born in 1831 and John M. Polk was not born in 1837, they are not reflected in this census. There is no 1840 census for John Poke/Polk which re-enforces my premise as to he died or left the area. John might have married twice: M/1: Catharine M/2: Rebecca ------------------------ If my premise is correct, then possibly John Ryman raised Henry Polk as a son rather then a grandson, if one of his daughter married John Polk and died in the epidemic after the birth of John M. Polk in 1837. I found the following information about John Ryman. John Ryman Born: 23 August 1764, Probably Philadelphia County, PA, possibly son of Ludwig Ryman Died: 5 November 1858, Shenandoah County, Virginia Married: Date Unknown to Christina Fadley Born: 1769, Pennsylvania Died: 1 November 1863, Rockingham County, Virginia Supposedly John Ryman left a Will in Shenandoah County probated in 1859 but I could find no evidence of this Will. Children of John Ryman 1. Henry Ryman 2. Joseph Ryman 3. Jacob Ryman 4. John Ryman 5. David Ryman 6. Samuel Ryman 7. Daniel Ryman 8. Lewis Ryman 9. Elizabeth Ryman 10. Hannah Ryman {Could her name be Hannah Rebecca Ryman and married John Polk?} 11. Catharine Ryman ------------------------ One more thing. There had to be Polk families in Shenandoah County early on since we found the following marriages: Leonard Lonas and Mary Polk 7 June 1813 Bondsman: Adam Polk John Polk and Cathrine Funkhouser 14 March 1811 Bondsman: Adam Polk John Barhman and Elizabeth Polk, His Ward 9 June 1817 Simon Polk and Dorothy Dellinger 6 June 1844 Bondsman: Frederick Dillinger ------------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong
In the 1860 Census, Shenandoah County, Dwelling 1142, family 1140 (Orkney Springs), 37 year old Henry Polk is a farm hand in the family of Lydia Wolf (maiden name Will, daughter of George Will and Catherine Byrd). Their neighbors are Joseph and Elizabeth Ryman. Marvin J Vann, "Shenandoah County, Virginia: A study of the 1860 Census," Volume 4, page 340, says this about Henry: "Henry Polk resided with the family of John and Christina Ryman at the time of the 1850 Census. There is no evidence that Henry was the father of John, however, it does pose an interesting question." Next door to Lydia Wolf in the 1860 Census is the family of Joseph Ryman, brother of Elizabeth Ryman Good, his wife Elizabeth, and their daughters Nancy, Rachel and Sarah. The most interesting chancery case you present below indicates that Henry Polk is the half brother of some of the individuals listed. Looking at the records for these people it seems that Henry was the son of Elizabeth Ryman Good 1801-1891 who was the daughter of John Ryman and Christina Fadely and the wife of Abraham Good born 1797. "...leaving as his heirs at law his half brothers and sisters and their children Abraham Good, Christena Good, Mary Webb, Catharine Marston and Joseph Marston her husband, half brothers and sisters and nephews Noah Good, Jacob Good, Greenbury Webb..." Catherine Marston: Catharine Good, 26, daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth, married Joseph Marston, 31, son of Joseph and Hannah, on 13 May 1869 Mary Webb could be one of: Ann A Good, 27, daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth married Jacob Webb, 30, son of Haram and Sarah, on 25 Dec 1866 Sarah Good, 22, daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth, married Isaac Webb Jr., 33, son of Haram and Sarah, on 13 Mar 1862 Abraham and Elizabeth also had a son named Abraham Unfortunately the records I have access to show no further light on Henry Polk, but I hope this helps. In the 1870 census we find 6 month Milton living with Rachel: 1870 US Census, page 10, Ashby, Shenandoah, Virginia. Dwelling 73, Family 73. Nancy Coffman 34 4000/600 housekeeper VA, Barbara A Coffman 2 VA, Sarah E Ryman 9 VA, Joseph Ryman 77 blacksmith VA, Rachel Ryman 24 VA, Milton Ryman 6/12 VA, Jacob Chick 20 VA laborer. Harpine's Zirkle family history says Rachel is the daughter of Levi Ryman and Annie Zirkle. Rachel married Elcana Miller on 28 July 1870. Rachel is also profiled in Vann's analysis of the 1860 Census (Volume 4, p. 334-335) but no mention of Charles is made there. It is possible that Charles Milton Ryman was base born, i.e. Rachel was unmarried... Lewis, it stated that after the Civil War he lived in Tubac, Arizona until two years before his death when he moved to San Diego, California. It never mentions that he was married and had a wife. One source states that Martha married sometime after the death in 1871 of Charles W. Lewis but we have not been able to find any evidence of her marriage or death in California or Arizona. We also could not find her in any census except the 1860. Someone needs to send for the Will of Charles W. Lewis and see if it names a wife. -------------------------------------------- TO BE CONTINUED: Researched and Submitted Gloria Bushong
