    1. [VASHENAN] John Bushong VS William Fowler, Shenandoah County Chancery Record - 1783
    2. Vashenan Listmates, We borrowed several of Harry Long's books while in New Market and came across the following entry in the Order Book for 1781 - 1784, transcribed by Amelia C. Gilreath. In her book we found the following entry. BUT we could not find anything in the Chancery Records. Does anyone know what this is all about? John Bushong - Plaintiff VS William Fowler - Defendant Page 119 (Page 301 - 25 December 1783) This day came the Plaintiff....Defendant being arrested, was solemnly called but came not....unless Defendant appear next Court....Judgment shall be entered up against him and Christly Miller his Security for the Damages.... Page 122 (Page 310 - 29 January 1784) John Bushong Sr. - Plaintiff VS William Fowler - Defendant This day came the Plaintiff and thereupon came Christly Miller and undertook for Defendant.....Continued until next Court. Page 142 (Page 365 - 27 March 1784) Agreed between the Parties........ -------------------------- We found the following later Chancery Record for William Fowler Shenandoah County Virginia Chancery Case #1798 - 006 Abraham Strickler VS William Fowler To procure the sale of a negroe mortgaged to the Complainant in order to pay the Debt, Interest and Usage. RWP The Commonwealth of Virginia to the Sheriff of Shenandoah County Greetings. You are hereby Commanded to Summon William Fowler to appear before the Justice of our said County Court at the Courthouse thereof on the second Tuesday in December next to answer a Bill in Chancery Exhibited against him by Abraham Strickler and this he shall in no wise omit under the penalty of $100 and have then there this witness. Philip Williams Clerk of our said County Court at the Courthouse thereof this 12th day of October 1798 and in the 23rd year of the Commonwealth. P. 1. [VASHENAN] Tombstones for Jacob Roof and wife Anna - Smith Creek area
    2. Vashenan Subscribers, Hoping this will help someone. While in New Market this week, Henry Buhl and I went out to the Roof Family Cemetery on Cedar Lane where Smith Creek flows across, on the property of Mark Anderson who graciously allowed us to come on to his property to see the cemetery. It is a stones throw from Henry Buhl's old home place. There are only a few tombstones left and only two readable. I looked on the Shenandoah Gen Web site to see if any of the tombstones were recorded and two were, neither of which was Jacob Roof's wife Anna. His wife Anna Roof's tombstone was found by Mr. Anderson, further down the bank, broken in two and buried. Mr. Anderson has it in his garage as it would not survive at this point in time in the elements. Mr. Anderson did some research and stated that the Roof family, after the deaths of the parents, moved to Rockingham County. We think that these Roof's came down from York County, Pennsylvania and probably knew the Bushong family well. I believe they married in to the Hess, Kagy and Rush families as did the Bushongs marry Hess and Rush families. Kagy's played a roll in the Bushong family too although we have yet to find a marriage. We transcribed the two readable tombstones and here they are: In Memory of Jacob Roof Departed This Life 13 March 1814 Aged 64 years {Born 1750} In Commemoration of Anna Roof Who was born in the year 1762 June the 25 Departed This Life September The 23 1820 Aged 58 years 9 months 28 days There were several fieldstones which were unreadable, several of which were probably children. The readable one recorded in the cemetery book was: Henrich Ruff Died November 1795 Note: The cemetery book states the location of this cemetery as Mt. Jackson but this is a little deceiving as it is not in Mt. Jackson. It is so close to New Market, we are not sure why they state Mt. Jackson in the book ----------- We found this entry in the Shenandoah County Virginia Order Book 14 October 1823 William Hess is appointed guardian to his children: namely John, Martin, Anna, Anna, Samuel, Elizabeth and William Hess, grandchildren of Anna Roof. ---------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

    1. [VASHENAN] Report on 2010 Bushong Family Reunion at New Market, Virginia
    2. Good Morning Vashenan Listmates, I returned home late this past Wednesday night from New Market, Virginia after eight days, tired but happy. The flights up and back were perfect with no turbulence. Even the little plane from Washington Dulles to Shenandoah Regional at Weyers Cave was a good flight. There were six people on the plane. It only took a half an hour. The 2010 Bushong Reunion was a huge success with an attendance of 82. The weather was perfect all three days. Lena Fuller was our guest on Saturday morning and afternoon at the Battlefield and she brought her wonderful Atlas of the Northern Neck Land Grants for our people to see. On Friday afternoon the registration went well at the Quality Inn. The Southern Kitchen opened their doors on Friday night and we were all quickly seated. For that we are appreciative. On Saturday morning, after late registration, we gathered in the Hall of Valor theater for the welcoming and announcements. We viewed the movie "Field of Lost Shoes" and then the park staff and volunteers put on a very creative play, "Portraits of the Bushong Family," which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. It was different then 2008's reunion play and we would like to thank locals Benjamin Miller, Daniel Harmon, Kaitlyn Hunsberger, Julia Bivens, Nita Gibson, Scott Harris, Troy Marshall, Stacey Nadeau, and Evan Hunsberger for the great job they did. After the play, there was free time to explore the grounds until lunch in the barn. On Saturday night we held the dinner in a large tent next to the Bushong home. We entered through one door of the home, into the sitting room restored in Russell K. Bushong's honor (my late husband), and after viewing the room, exited the other door and into the tent where the dinner was held. The tables were very prettily decorated with fall arrangements and candles. The quilt was displayed behind the stage where Keith and Pat Gibson would perform. Janet and Stan Taber of Missouri won the door prize at the Saturday night dinner, a beautiful walking stick made from a branch of a tree growing on the Bushong property by Susie Desurrency, one of the park's employees. Richard and Bonnie Bushong of West Virginia won Betsy's quilt raffle and were thrilled to take the quilt home where it will be lovingly displayed on a wall of their master bedroom. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Shaffers of Woodstock did an excellent job with the food and the entertainment was great. The needle work sampler in memory of Russell K. Bushong was unveiled Saturday night and will be hung in the sitting room and Amanda Liskey was recognized with our gratitude for her beautiful needlework. Stacey Nadeau was recognized for drawing the design. Keith and Pat Gibson gave an excellent performance after the dinner. It was the best ever and everyone loved the singing, stories and humor and the personal touch that Keith and Pat do so well just for us. On Sunday morning Chaplin Jeff Burbank of Virginia and North Carolina did an excellent job of leading us in worship in the barn and the title of his talk was "Becoming a Person of Valor" using Judges 6:11-16 as his scripture. Hopefully if not deployed, Jeff will return in 2012 to lead us in worship once again. Sunday lunch was yummy. It was sad to see such a perfect Reunion come to an end but everyone is looking forward to the next Bushong Reunion 5, 6, & 7 October 2012. Hope to see you there. Pictures up soon on the Bushong Reunion website and we have added a few photos to the BUSHONG ANCESTORS album. Although we did not do much research this trip, we do have a few things to post of interest. Gloria Bushong

    1. [VASHENAN] LONGACRE Family
    2. Steve Frank
    3. I am researching the LONGACRE Family from Shenandoah County Virginia in the 1700s and 1800s. I am interested in learning more about Joseph (born about 1796) and Margaret Longacre. In my research, I see a considerable amount of work has been done on the Longacre Family back to the 1600s. I want to know where this Joseph ties into the Longacre Family by learning more about his parents. I would appreciate any assistance from the group. Steve Steve Frank Tiffin, Ohio SFrank@woh.rr.com

    1. [VASHENAN] EARLY MINISTERS
    2. E&B Gordon
    3. Would anyone know of or know how to find which church affiliation for ministers in 1796? I have found marriage records, both 1796, that show William Williamson and James Huffman as ministers. Any ideas on how to locate the churches they were connected to or where they performed marriages? Thank you.

"HIRAM KESSINGER was born in Washington County, Maryland, February 2, 1823, and is one of the nine children of JACOB and MARGARET (BEARD) KESSINGER, named as follows: JACOB, THEODORE, BENJAMIN, HIRAM, LUTHER, MARY (deceased), MARGARET, LUCINDA and GEORGE. The father was born in Maryland, took part in the war of 1812, and was engaged in a variety of occupations during life, such as tanner, merchant, manufacturer of earthenware, tinner and farmer. He was well educated, and was quite a linguist; he died in Harrison County, Indiana, in 1838. HIRAM KESSINGER came to Harrison County with his father in 1837, and he there was engaged in farming and merchandising. In January, 1870, he came to this township. He was married July 17, 1859, to ROWENA GAITHER, and has had born to him four children - THOMAS, CAROLINE, WALTER, and MARGARET, the last named deceased. In February, 1862, he enlisted in the Fifty-third Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Two months later, he became Ward Master in the hospital, and then Steward, holding the last-named position until mustered out in July, 1865. He was present at the sieges of Corinth, Vicksburg and Jackson; at the battle of Kenesaw Mountain, at the siege of Atlanta, at Jonesboro, with Sherman on his renowned march, at Savannah, Columbia, Raleigh, and other points. He owns a fine farm of 100 acres, two and a half miles south of Medarysville, raises a variety of crops, and has a neat residence and commodious outbuildings." ----------------------------------------- TO BE CONTINUED: Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

    1. [VASHENAN] COBY Family from Tom's Brook
    2. Steve Frank
    3. I am an officer in a local genealogical society in Ohio. Our society is currently having programming for the fall in which we feature the genealogy of a local celebrity much in the fashion of "Who Do You Think You Are", the series recently supported by Ancestry.com. We are looking to uncover hidden stories about the family which will serve to stimulate interest in our local society. One of the three local celebrities we are featuring is a direct descendant of Benjamin COBY of Towns Brook, Shenandoah, Virginia. He was born in 1802 and died in 1864, prior to the Civil War Battle at Tom's Brook. My understanding is that Tom's Brook is a very historical area, and I am interested in connecting with someone on the list who is familiar with Tom's Brook. I am willing to do work in exchange by researching information on Shenandoah County residents who emigrated from Virginia to Ohio. I appreciate any assistance that someone can give. Thank you. 3. Gloria and Other Listers, For your info, there is a book, "Family Record of Isaac Christopher Simler", 1971 (176 pages), by Douglas F. Brown (now deceased).  I have a copy of it, and it should be noted that he includes the ancestry of the Simlers, back to Rudolph Simler (1449-1534) of Switzerland. I also have an autograph album, belonging to my g-aunt Lucinda Ellen (Fravel) Spore, that contains entries during the period 1884-1886, at reunions of Fravels and Simlers in Kirksville MO, Olney IL, Owensville IN and Corydon IN. 1. Re: [VASHENAN] Wm FRAVEL m. Elizabeth CRAWFORD
    2. Hi Julie, Glad to know that you are still around. You have shared so much with this List with the marriages of Shenandoah County from the microfilm records of LDS. I appreciate you sharing marriage but this William Fravel married to Elizabeth Crawford is not in the direct lineage of the descendants of George Fravel Sr. and Elizabeth Bushong. Appreciate the thought though. Gloria B.

    3. Sorry - I havne't been paying attention to this thread, but I was cleaning off my desktop and noticed that I had a list of marriages of Crawfords from Floyd county, Indiana.  and one of those was to a William H. FRAVEL.  This maybe old news to you, but just in case it's not.  I don't have any other info than the below, but the New Albany, Ind library has some great people working there - you want the Indiana room. 1. Re: [VASHENAN] First census of the U.S. Shenandoah County
    2. The 1790 census was destroyed and it has been reconstructed as much as possible using the various tax roles of 1783, 1785 and some others. Anything that says 1790 census in Virginia is not - it's the tax roles. Bev In a message dated 9/13/2010 12:40:51 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, mhc217@cox.net writes: These certainly are helpful answers. Cathy - That is great transition information from Spotsylvania to Shenandoah and I will keep that handy. Tom - I will look for the 1783 Heads of families for the areas you mention. It is good to know there are such lists out there. Will also check out the 1785. I took a 12 year hiatus on genealogy files and am now trying to decipher my notes. In those days it was happy days at LDS or library. Now there is so much online and I am learning how to find it. As it happens, I went to: http://www.census.gov/prod/www/abs/decennial/1790.html and looked in the wrong place. I opened the 1785. The 1790 is there, as well as an Index which takes forever to open but is worth it. Thanks so very much for your help in solving this.
