    1. Re: [VASHENAN] Where is Valley Forge in Shenandoah County?
    2. Good question. I already knew that Frank Bushong owned property on the River at one time but wasn't sure where. Also I found out at the Bushong reunion from a descendant of Joseph and Fannie Myers that they lived on the west side of the River at one time which surprised me. By talking to Harry Long of New Market, who is a wealth of information he helped put the whole thing in perspective. He said there were two forges in Lee district, New Market area. Both forges were owned by the Pennybakers, one named Pine Forge and the other he thought really never had a name, it was Cave or Kay Hill Mill but later used for a forge. He was glad to know what it was called. Since there were only two forges in that area then it only stands to reason that this had to be Valley Forge since we definitely knew where Pine Forge was located. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Gloria

    1. Re: [VASHENAN] Where is Valley Forge in Shenandoah County?
    2. Okay folks I have one correction. Pine Forge and Valley Forge were not the same forge, BUT they were owned by the same family, the Pennybakers. Pine Forge was near Smith Creek on the east side of the Valley Pike (Route 11) just north of New Market, and Valley Forge was on the west side of the Shenandoah River just west of the Battlefield property and was part of Cave Hill Mill. That makes perfect sense since Franklin was the son of Jacob and Sarah Strickler Bushong, the Battlefield family. Gloria

    1. Re: [VASHENAN] Where is Valley Forge in Shenandoah County?
    2. Thanks to Linda who was correct in saying that it was a forge. I believe it could have been the old Pine Forge near New Market and somewhere stored in my back of my brain was a memory based on a conversation with an old timer that Pine Forge was referred to as Valley Forge sometimes. Or at least I think that what they said. That was at least 10 years ago and my memory isn't as good as it used to be. I found William Bailey in the 1880 census living near New Market with neighbors Strother and George W. Shaffer, George A. Stillwell and Joseph and Fannie Myers. This would have been in the Smith Creek area near New Market. 1880 Federal Census: Virginia Lee Township, Ed 88, Shenandoah County Enumerated 7 June 1880 Page 512A Lines 30-38, HH 197/209 William Bailey White/Male/62/Married/WorksOnFarm/VA/VA/VA Sarah F. 3. The only current Valley Forge I know of is where George Washington over wintered his troops in the winter of 1777 in the Revolutionary War. And it's no where near VA. So, it may be a no-longer-existing location. However, I did find other references to a "valley forge" in VA. Snippet as follows: "I have written another book about Shenandoah County ancestors. ... When I was able to buy the original Union Forge records from a Stoneburner neighbor I was elated because not only did it give a record of a Valley forge (only two were here in the Valley) but the materials gave hundreds of Valley names and names of companies and persons outside the Valley who dealt there and what they bought and sold." This I found at: http://www.user.shentel.net/ mlw/ and the term "valley forge" may just refer to a forge in a valley. So, you might want to contact the author of that site, mlw@shentel.net who may know more about the location of the valley forges he/she mentioned. 3. I dont' have access to all my information right now, but as I recall, Nancy Ryman is Joseph's daughter, and the mother of Sarah. Sarah E. Ryman is really the child of Erasmus Lutz, who died in a Yankee prison camp before he could mary Nancy Ryman. Sarah used the Ryman name until she was older, but Erasmus Lutz appears on her marriage license as her father. She married George Helsley. I believe Milton is Rachael's son. You can check to see if Milton has a death certificate listing parents. She might be a daughter-in-law. I actually have a photo of Nancy Ryman Coffman is anyone is interested. 3. Why not try writing the Jersey Universalist Christian Church to see if they have any "family" records. This obituary clearly indicates his "mother, father, and present wife, Ellen Fravel went to church". If they were members, the church would have that information.
