    1. Re: [VASHENAN] Where is Valley Forge in Shenandoah County?
    2. Good morning, Vashenan Listmates, Little did I know that one little article is an old newspaper would lead to so many questions yet unanswered. The Shenandoah Valley Herald Wednesday, 15 March 1882 Page 2, Column 4 On March 8th, William Bailey sold a house and lot, about a mile east of Valley Forge, in this county, to Franklin Bushong for $100. The house and lot William Bailey sold to Franklin "Frank" Bushong seems to be a mystery at this point in time. We found William Bailey and his family in the census records thinking it would put things in perspective, as to his residence and this house and lot, but according to all the censuses, William Bailey didn't own the property he lived on. So that means it must have been an inherited piece from his family or one of his wives. His father was Jesse Bailey and his mother was Christina Bowen. We think he sold the piece of property to get enough money to go to Greene County, Ohio where some of his children had gone. We are waiting for someone to retrieve the 1882 Deed from the courthouse at Woodstock to see the wording on the Deed. The Deed should tell us exactly where the property is located, then we can, from that, establish the location of the Valley forge since it is about 1 mile east of the property. The family seem to be Brethren. ----------------------- William Bailey married twice: M/1: 30 April 1841, Page County, VA to Rebecca Jane Long. 1. Re: [VASHENAN] James Allen land in 1814
    2. 1815 Directory of Virginia Landowners (and Gazetteer), Volume 4, Northern Region, abstracted by Robert G. Ward has two James Allens in Shenandoah County. One is listed as a sadler and lives in Woodstock. The other lives North River, 15 miles south of the courthouse. I'm assuming that the River is the Shenandoah, but the 15 miles south of the courthouse at least gives a vicinity for his place. 2. Linda, For some reason, I cannot view the original record. But the index states that there is an Abraham Shatz involved. Without viewing the original record I can't be sure, but think this is Abraham Sheetz not Shatz. Meems Bottom is just south of Mt. Jackson. Is anyone else able to view the Chancery Record? I am trying to determine if it is a site problem or a computer issue on my part. Thanks, Gloria

I talked to Philip Crown who did extensive work on the area on the west side of the Shenandoah River near the New Market Battlefield and he confirmed that I was correct in my assumption. What I need to do is find the 1882 Deed and see what description they give for the house and lot that Frank Bushong bought from William Bailey. Gloria

I should guess it is the old forge located between Columbia Liberty Iron Co. and L. 3. That's the exact chancery record I'm working from, trying to find the location of the land that my ancestor leased. Thanks for your input. 3. Does anyone have any sources they could check to help me in my search for where in Shenandoah County James Allen had land in 1814? I'd also be interested in any online land records for historical time periods in Shenandoah County. I've found wonderful online sources of this type in Loudoun County, and was hoping to find some of the same for Shenandoah County. 3. Have you checked the Library of Virginia on-line digital images site?  If he's listed on there, you can at least find out how many acres he owned and when it was acquired.   Terri --- On Sun, 10/31/10, Linda Stokesbury Brennan <linda@stokesbury.org> wrote: From: Linda Stokesbury Brennan <linda@stokesbury.org> Subject: [VASHENAN] James Allen land in 1814 To: vashenan@rootsweb.com Date: Sunday, October 31, 2010, 5:30 PM Does anyone have any sources they could check to help me in my search  for where in Shenandoah County James Allen had land in 1814?
