    2. Hi Gloria, Thank you for your ideas. I have been thru every microfilm I could get my hands on from interlibrary loan from the Library of Virginia. I can not find a single other WILT in all of Shenandoah County, but he says he was born there. I have thought that maybe he was born a WILL (as these are many) and morphed his name for one reason or another, as this has happened in my family. But someone on this list has said that he found no relation. I have not completely ruled it out yet, I am trying to keep all options open. My husbands family decended from Samuels son Philip W WILT. And the story coming down was that they were once from the Pennsylvania Dutch. Which church would they have been associated with if they were of this religion? I did find WILT's in York county PA, but I need to connect Samuel with someone in Shenandoah County if he was supposedly born there. As to what he may have been called as a child is unknown as he was married before the 1850 census and has been Samuel WILT or WILL in every census. There are no WILTS in the 1840 or earlier censuses that I could find. Thank you Lisa In a message dated 12/3/2010 10:34:22 AM Eastern Standard Time, Chochoruss@aol.com writes: > > Lisa, I am wondering if you found an obit on Samuel to see what it says? > Have you looked at all of the Wilt wills and estates settlements, > including > Deeds in the area to see if perhaps Samuel is mentioned under another name > > and you aren't aware that it is him. 2. Lisa, I am wondering if you found an obit on Samuel to see what it says? Have you looked at all of the Wilt wills and estates settlements, including Deeds in the area to see if perhaps Samuel is mentioned under another name and you aren't aware that it is him. Just remember that sometimes the parents called the son by a different name then the son went by in census and land records. A good example of this is John Benjamin Franklin Bushong, son of Jacob Bushong and Sarah Strickler of the New Market Battlefield family, who in his father's will, Jacob referred to his son as Benjamin yet the son went by Frank or Franklin most of his life. So beware that you don't fall in to a trap. The answer may be staring you right in the face. Gloria Bushong

    3. Sorry, there's no mention of Samuel's parents in Vann's book. Here is the first paragraph: "Samuel Wilt was married to Lydia Miller on 28 May 1846. The bondsman for the marriage was George Miller. According to Waverly Barb, Barb family historian, Lydia Miller was the daughter of Jacob and Catherine. Jacob Miller married Catherine Sager on 22 Oct 1803. This family was listed as Wiett in the 1870 census. Samuel was listed as an iron ore miner." I came across Samuel and his family in the 1850 Census a while ago, where his surname is listed as "Will." This caused me some excitement until I realized it was a typo. I did not see this set of books on their list, although they are on microfilm somewhere, I am sure. I found the first 4 volumes in books at the Library in Appalachian State University. It helps to know where in the census they are as the families are listed by dwelling number. This will help to identify which volume you possibly need. Good Luck Lisa

    3. Hi Lisa, Samuel Wilt and family are written up in Volume 5 of Mr. Vann's work. Two pages on the immediate family, and another page on related families (Miller and Minnick). I got Volume 5 in paperback and Volumes 1-4 in PDF from www.heritagebooks.com earlier this year. I see at their site that Volume 6 is now out and a CD can be had that has the first five volumes on CD. 2. Hello, I was researching in the Appalachian State University Library a couple of weeks ago and came acroos a set of books by Marvin J. Vann called the "Shenandoah County Virginia Study of the 1860 Census. It had wonderful information on the families of the 1860 census, unfortunately for me it stopped short of the family I needed. They only had 4 volumes and the family I needed would probably be in the 5th volume, if there is one. Does anyone have access to this set of books? Is there a 5th volume? And could I ask for a look up? I need the info on family dwelling number 1291, family number 1289. They are Samuel and Lydia Wilt, living in Liberty Furnace District with their 6 kids, Sarah, Catherine, John, Caroline, Amanda, and Harry. Thank you, any help you can offer is greatly appreciated. I have found marriage records, both 1796, that show William Williamson and James Huffman as ministers. Any ideas on how to locate the churches they were connected to or where they performed marriages? Thank you.
