    1. [VASHENAN] Elizabeth Bushong married to William Wright - Shenandoah Co. VA
    2. Vashenan Listmates, Earlier we asked if anyone on the List had a marriage date for Elizabeth Bushong and William Wright. So far, no answers. We found the obit for Elizabeth Bushong who married William Wright in the Shenandoah Herald for 1890. There are so many curious unanswered questions about her and the family. For instance, when her father Andrew Bushong wrote his Will, she was married and yet it does not appear that way in the Will. Of course, this does give credence to the suit filed in Shenandoah County by grandson Henry Snapp after Andrew Bushong death where the grandson claimed that his grandfather did not write the Will. He claimed that John Bushong wrote it and passed it off as his father's Will. We posted this Chancery suit back in March 2009 as part of our post about Andrew Bushong but am re-posting some of it here. Check BOSCHONG Archives for the entire suit. We can find no marriage record for Elizabeth Bushong and William Wright which really bugs us. There should be one! Elizabeth Bushong Wright and husband William Wright had three confirmed children and yet we have seen many submitters state five. Until we can determine the exact date of the marriage, we cannot add the two young boys who died early on as their children. -------------------- This Chancery Bill was rather interesting. Evidently Henry Snapp thought that the Will of his grandfather Andrew Bushong was a fake and was trying to have it made null and void in the Court. We find it rather interesting that the other two Executors named in the Will refused to serve with John Bushong and that all of the depositions for this case are missing from the files. Grandson Henry Snapp stated in his Bill that Jacob, William and David were now residents of Virginia but that was not true. They had been residents of Ohio for a long time but whether they made the trip back to Virginia for this suit is not clear since much of the paperwork is missing. The one good bit of information that came from this Bill is the fact that it gives us the exact month that Andrew Bushong died, that being January in the year 1853. ------------------------------- Shenandoah County Virginia Chancery Bill Records held at Library of Virginia, Richmond Filed March 1853 Case #1854-017 Exr. of Andrew Bushong et als Plaintiff: Henry Snapp Defendants: John Bushong, Executor Andrew Bushong deceased And Isaac Bushong, Henry Bushong, David Bushong, William Bushong, Jacob Bushong, John Jacobs and wife Sarah Bushong, William Wright and wife Elizabeth To the honorable the Judge of the Circuit Court for the County of Shenandoah Respectively complaining sheweth unto Your Honor, Your Orator Henry Snapp, that sometime in the month of January 1853, one Andrew Bushong, then a resident of Shenandoah County, died leaving as his only heirs at law, the following persons VIZ: John Bushong, Andrew Bushong, Isaac Bushong, Henry Bushong, David Bushong, William Bushong, Jacob Bushong, Sarah the wife of John Jacobs, Elizabeth the wife of William Wright and Your Orator Henry Snapp (the only child of Margaret his Mother, now deceased, a daughter of said Andrew Bushong, that died many years ago.) Your Orator sheweth that said Andrew Bushong died seized and possessed of a large real and personal Estate, situate in the County aforesaid: As to all which his children, and grandchild above named are the only heirs and distributees. That the County Court of Shenandoah, at its March Term 1853, admitted to probate a paper writing purporting to be the last will and testament of said Andrew Bushong deceased; an official copy of which and after, now admitting the same to probate is filed herewith as Exhibit No. 1 and I pray so to be taken as part of this Bill. That this so called pretended will was prepared by John Bushong one of the Executors therein named who qualified as such executor given bond and security as required by law, the other executors named in said will refusing to qualify as will fully appear by reference to Exhibit No. 1 as aforesaid. Your Orator and heir so charges that the said paper writing so produced and admitted to publish as aforesaid was not and is not the last will and testament of the said Andrew Bushong deceased. It is further shown that Your Orator and the above named children of Andrew Bushong deceased VIZ: John, Andrew. Isaac. Henry. David. William. Jacob. Sarah Jacobs wife of John Jacobs and Elizabeth wife of William Wright are devisees under said pretended will and are therefore necessary parties to this suit. That said Jacob Bushong, William Bushong, and David Bushong are now residents of this Commonwealth; and that all the heirs reside in the County of Shenandoah. To the end therefore that justice may be done and Your Orator prays that said John Bushong an heir together and as executor of the so called last will and testament of Andrew Bushong deceased, Andrew Bushong, Isaac Bushong, Henry Bushong, David Bushong, William Bushong, Jacob Bushong, John Jacobs and Sarah his wife and William Wright and Elizabeth his wife may be made parties, defendants to this suit and answer this Bill upon oath: That the Court will direct an issue to be tried at its bar "whether the said paper writing admitted to probate as aforesaid, is the true last will and testament of the said Andrew Bushong deceased and that the Item may be set aside and declared null and void so that Your Orator and the sons and daughter aforesaid Andrew Bushong deceased may be let in as heirs and distributees of the Estate of deceased and that the court will grant other and further general relief on the premises and the circumstances of the case may require and will compel with the proceedings of a Court of Equity and as in duty bound Your Orator will ever pray for. 2. In a message dated 1/4/2011 3:21:02 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, grenier@earthlink.net writes: Can't help but I would guess at older children. She would have been around 32 when she had Andrew. Maybe some may have died or some may have been girls who married. Who is Rebecca Funk? ----------------------------- Barbara, I believe that Elizabeth "Betsy" Bushong was older when she first married so don't have a problem with that. She is living with her elderly parents in the 1840 census. We have a photo of her up on our website and she was not the most beautiful woman in the world by today's standards. Some researchers have said that the two young boys buried in the Bowman-Fisher Cemetery were hers but I have my doubts unless I find a marriage record that put her married around 1840-41. Neither is mentioned in her obit and since their tombstones only give the initials W. and E. as parents, we aren't totally convinced as those names could stand for other names then William and Elizabeth. Getting to Rebecca Funk. When we were doing this research in the 1860 census it stated her name as Recepta Funk. We assumed that the enumerator just heard the name wrong and wrote Rebecca as Recepta since that is a pretty weird name. There was a Rebecca J. Funk in the 1850 census, age 9, living with her parents Jesse and Rebecca Funk which we had found during this research so that was what made us believe that the name was just incorrect in the record. BUT now, looking further, we found a Sarepta Funk, age 9, living with her parents Joseph and Elizabeth Funk. So, I guess the name is something between Recepta and Sarepta. Thanks for calling this to my attention. 2. Good Afternoon Vashenan Listmates, I have a loose end that I would like to tie up. Has anyone ever found a marriage record and date for William Wright and Elizabeth Bushong of Shenandoah County, VA? Here is the 1860 census on them. I am guessing that they married around 1842 since their oldest son was born in that era. I looked in the bonds but haven't found them as yet. Elizabeth lived until 1890 but her obit in The Shenandoah Herald doesn't give much information except the names of her three sons. He has newspapers published out of New Market and the Henkel press called The Shenandoah Valley and the ones held by the Library of Congress are published out of Woodstock and called The Shenandoah Herald. 1. [VASHENAN] Powells Fort Bushongs and Taylor Connections
    2. Part 1 of 4 ------------------------ Happy New Year Vashenan Listmates, It has been a slow day and while reading the posts about Zachery Taylor, I was wondering if the Taylor that married in to the Bushong family is connected. We have Adelaide Virginia Taylor who married Abraham Bushong. Adelaide Virginia Taylor was the daughter of Chloe Hackley and Herbert M. Taylor who married 26 March 1833 in Fauquier County, VA. They are not to be confused with the Herbert Thornton Taylor married to an Elizabeth living in the Marksville area of Page County, Virginia in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. As I have found out from further research they are a totally different family. Abraham Bushong was the son of William Bushong and Rachel Clem of Powell's Fort and grandson of John Bushong and Magdalena Bauserman. Here is what I have. Hopefully someone will connect with our Bushongs and this Taylor family. Back on 11 May 2007, we posted some information about this particular family to the Vashenan List so check the Archives. This family has an interesting family history since Adalaide Virginia Taylor's sister Mary Jane Taylor was married to Absolom Clem who was killed by bushwachers in 1862 in the Fort. Absolom Clem was the brother of Rachel Clem who married William Bushong, son of John Bushong but we've already told you all that back on 11 May 2007, so check the Vashenan Archives. Another part of the family history is that Arthur Godfrey bought Bushong land in 1946 near Clark's Gap, Loudoun County, Virginia. Abraham Bushong and wife Adelaide in Powells Fort in 1876 sold 60 acres of their land reserving a right away to their residence to Alfred Ritenour, son of George and Anna Ritenour. We believe this 60 acres was possibly part of 100 acres owned by the heirs of his brother Jacob Bushong that his father William had bought from Elizabeth McInturff Bushong , widow of his brother Jacob and her son Andrew Jackson Bushong, his nephew after Andrew reached age of consent in 1868. William Bushong died 31 March 1875. His widow Rachel Clem Bushong sold in 1881, more of their Powells' Fort land, 65 acres that came from her husband to Alfred Ritenour which means if they didn't sell the land, the heirs of Alfred Ritenour are living on Bushong land. The original tract was 212 acres plus other acreage and was divided among John Bushong's heirs. Some of the remaining acres was owned by Elizabeth Bushong and husband Isaac Coverstone. We have copies of most of the Deeds which we have put on our BOSCHONG List in January 2006 but think there are a few still missing. Much later in the family history, the Abraham Bushong family moved from Shenandoah County, to Clark's Gap in Warren County, to Loudoun County where Abraham Bushong bought a beautiful farm of 295 acres referred to as Greenlease Farm. After the death of Abraham and wife Adelaide Bushong, their children inherited the farm. They just referred to it as "The Farm." In October 1915 the son John and wife Pearl (Rake) Bushong sold their interest to his three siblings and moved to Washington DC area. Virgil, Minnie and Charles lived on the farm until 1918 when on 18 May 1918, Virgil conveyed his interest in the property to his two unmarried siblings, Minnie Belle Bushong and Charles E. Bushong for one dollar. On the 27 December 1919, Minnie Belle and Charles sold the 295 acres farm to Frank P Hurst. This farm was bought around 1946 by Arthur Godfrey and his wife, of radio and television fame and was one of two farms that Arthur Godfrey owned in Loudoun County, Virginia. Virgil S. Bushong after conveying his interest in the home farm at Clark's Gap to Charles and Minnie, then married 1 June 1918, Elizabeth Warren, a school teacher and bought a large farm at Mt. Gilead. Later Virgil S. Bushong bought additional property surrounding his Mountain View Farm. 10 April 1929 he bought 70 acres known as the Harrison Farm and 9 May 1931 the Jackson Place containing 192 acres . By the time Virgil Silman Bushong known as V. S. Bushong had finished buying property, he owned almost 1000 acres of land. He was a horse and cattle man. --------------------------- The Bushongs had a lot of idiosyncrasies and didn't always like the names they were born with. William M. Bushong alias Virgil Silman Bushong was no exception and made it known at a very early age that he did not like his name and would not answer to it. For a long time until he entered school, they called him "Buddy." When he entered school the school teacher insisted that he have a formal name so Buddy decided he liked the school teacher's name and proclaimed he would be known as Virgil Silman Bushong. Later, as an adult, he would use just his initials V. S. Bushong. --------------------------- Shenandoah County Virginia Deed Book SS Page 467 10 May 1841 THIS INDENTURE made the 10 day of May in the year 1841 between David McInturff Junr. Commissioner as hereinafter mentioned of the County of Shenandoah and State of Virginia of the one part and William Bushong and Jacob Bushong of the County and State aforesaid of the other part. WHEREAS by a decree pronounced on the 9 day of March 1841 by the Court of the said county in a suit in chancery between Isaac Coverstone and Elizabeth his wife complainants and William Bushong and others defendants, and also another decree of the date of these presents, it was, among other things therein mentioned, decreed and ordered that David McInturff Junr. be appointed commissioner for the purpose of selling the tract of land whereof John Bushong died seized, said to contain two hundred and twelve acres, more or less, and having duly advertised the time and place of sale, did, on the 19 day of March 1841, offer the said land upon the premises for sale to the highest bidder in the several payments in the decrees mentioned at which sale the said William Bushong and Jacob Bushong became the purchasers thereof at the sum of nine hundred and fifty five dollars and having received the cash payment now make this deed in pursuance of the aforesaid decree pronounced on the 10 day of May 1841. THIS INDENTURE witnesseth, that the said David McInturff Junr. for and in consideration of the premises and also for and in consideration of the said sum of Nine hundred and fifty five dollars in hand paid and secured to be paid by the said William Bushong and Jacob Bushong the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged the said David McInturff Junr. commissioner as aforesaid hath granted, bargained, sold and confirmed by these presents, doth grant, bargain, sell and confirm unto the said William Bushong and Jacob Bushong their heirs and assigns the aforesaid tract or parcel of land lying and being in Powells fort and is said to contain two hundred and twelve acres more or less exception the interest of dower therein assigned to Catharine Bushong widow of said John Bushong decd. for and during her natural life. Together with all and singular the appurtenances thereto belonging and the reversions and remainders, rents, issues and profits thereof, TO HAVE AND TO HOLD, all and singular the premises with the appurtenances hereby conveyed unto the said William Bushong and Jacob Bushong their heirs and assigns forever to the only proper use and behoof of the said William Bushong and Jacob Bushong their heirs and assigns forever as fully and completely as they can or may do by virtue of the said decree, this conveyance and the law in such cases made and provided by these presents. IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF the said David McInturff Jr. commissioner as aforesaid hath hereunto set his hand and seal the day and year first above written. David McInturff Jr., Com., Seal Shenandoah County, SS We, David Crawford and Philip Stickley Justices of the Peace in the county aforesaid in the state of Virginia do hereby certify that David McInturff Jun. Com. and party to a certain deed bearing date the 10th day of May 1841 and hereunto annexed personally appeared before us in our county aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed and desired us to certify the said acknowledgment to the Clerk of the County Court of Shenandoah in order that the said deed may be recorded. Given under our hands and seals this 10th day of May 1841. David Crawford, Seal Philip Stickley, Seal Shenandoah County, SS This within conveyance was returned to the Clerk's office of said County on the 10th day of August 1841 and admitted to record. Teste P. Williams, CSC ---------- The 212 acres of land in Powell's Fort was to be divided up among his 7 heirs (6 children & his second wife Catherine) but the sons Jacob and William Bushong bought out the interests of their siblings, Mary (Michael Fogle} and Andrew J. Bushong and John's widow Catharine got her Dower of 51 1/2 acres. We know what happened to William Bsuhong's land as it was sold to Alfred Ritenour later, but for a long time we could not find what happened to the land that Jacob Bushong owned in Powell's Fort until a trip to Virginia in October 2006 to the courthouse at Woodstock for another look through the books. We found a Deed of Dower Rights which answers some of our questions, but not all. For further clarification refer back to the Archives for January 2006 to refresh your memories of the Estate settlements of John and Jacob Bushong and Will of Ephraim Woods, second husband of Elizabeth McInturff Bushong. --------------- TO BE CONTINUED: Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

    2. Ken, It is possible the Virginia repository that had the Chronicling America newspaper project would be interested in including your images. Please contact them. Surely, The Library of Congress [LOC] would be interested in having the newspapers. Not sure they would be digitized by them. The states' projects did all that work and sent the tapes to LOC. Let us know what you do with them. Whatever you do, put the name & year in the subject line of an email to this mailing list when you let us know. 2. Forgot to add that the newspaper issues with the words you are searching for will appear and be highlighted to show you what column the words appear in. After you click on the individual newspaper, you can make the words bigger by looking in the left hand corner Zoom with the plus + sign and click on it to make the words as big as you want. I usually have to click on it twice. Then you can move the page around with the with your cursor to find the item on the page with your interest. Gloria B.

Dated 1888. 1902, 1923 and possibly other dates. The papers are very fragile and before I try to copy them I was wondering if anyone knows if they are already available either online of in micro files? Thanks, Ken

VALLEY Pat, Thanks for your message about Jeanette's book and the names Taylor, Munch, and Barr. Since I e-mailed with this question, I have called Jeanette and talked with her. She said that the new book is more a history book than one on genealogy. I talked to Jeanette in person at her home a few years ago when we were in Ft. Valley trying to research these names in our family. If you ever hear of anyone who has Zachary Taylor family history, I would be very interested in talking with that person. We have from Zachary Taylor and forward, but have only been able to go back as far as his father, James Taylor. And there we get stuck. What we know is James, Zachary, Oscar, Beatrice Taylor – and then me. I was born in 1934 in Washington, DC to Beatrice Taylor Gardner, daughter of Oscar Taylor and Mary Elizabeth (Mamie) Barr. One of my fondest childhood memories is of going "up in the country" to Uncle Stanley and Aunt Lucy Barr's farm. We live in Lynchburg, VA and I teach at Liberty University. Thanks for taking time to answer my question. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! 2. Eugene, I will quickly "jump in" here to say that my "Welcome to Fort Valley" book arrived yesterday evening; so I have only been able to read the first eleven pages; but already I have found I could add some documentation to the George WASHINGTON retreat plan, not proven; but possible, to strengthen the thought that it was in "fact" one of his plans. My ancestor held property on Vetch's Gap, so when they rolled into POWELL's silver mining operation, my papers fully support that thought also. Anyhow, company on the way; but I am eager to proceed with my reading of the book which is beyond my expectations and truly a great work! 1. [VASHENAN] Thanks, Gloria for all the Fort Valley info.
    2. Nancy Shrum
    3. Gloria, you are such a treasure-trove of information. I am saving your Fort Valley posts so I can study them more later. So many familiar names. Right now I am mainly interested in Clems and Ritenours. My mother always said there were three different families of Clems in the Fort with her father John A G Clem's family being one. I didn't into genealogy until later in life, and have not researched her family much. I do know that her grandfather was Daniel Burner Clem. Today, I was skimming the new Fort Valley book, and came upon Johann Dietrich "Teeter" Clem/Klemm. I see where the Cross Roads community was named Detrick after him. Also, he served in the Revolutionary War. I am wondering if he is my ancestor, and if anyone on this forum knows more connections of the Clem families of Fort Valley. I'm just taking a quick break at my pc, and didn't mean to get into family history today since tomorrow is Christmas. It makes me think of George Bower's sermon last Sunday. He was telling about Jesus's family tree back through David and beyond. Then he said that it would be good to make Jesus the head of our family trees. I'm with George. The new Fort Valley book is such a broad history, and I get lost in it. Our farm was fairly isolated in the lower end of the Fort near Elizabeth Furnace, and we didn't keep up with the hub of activity around the Cross Roads so much, except, for going to church and visiting relatives. I see the Fort from a different vantage point, and need to broaden my horizon. Hoping to relax and read more after the holidays. The trouble is that I just keep falling asleep in that comfortable recliner. Dreaming of a good old homespun Christmas here with family altogether. The menu is planned, and Billy Bob has been helping me today. I fixed liver pudding and buckwheat cakes for lunch. Tomorrow I will fry some scrapple along with so many other delicious foods we eat only at Christmas. Wish you all could stop by, and have one of the ice box cookies with black walnuts made over my mom's Fort Valley recipe. Praying that everyone has a very Merry Christmas and Happy Healthy New Year.
