On the Liggett Forum a fellow by the name of Walter Farwell posted the following information. PETER (Deed book U, p.621, 3/27/1812 says he's of SHENANDOAH CO., Virginia) 3. Stephen (Deed book AA, p. 256, 4/29/1814 says he's of BROOKE CO., Virginia) 4. There was more than one William Liggett. Two brothers, Jacob and Peter Liggett came from Pennsylvania to Shenandoah. Jacob later went to Rockingham County. In the absence of gravestones, you might check with the cemeteries in Edinburg about their burial records. Also in the very early days, a little pine tree was often planted to mark a grave. This was done as early as the period when Indians were at war with the pioneers. Reason was to mark the grave in a way the family would know but indians would not. It also was done down the years because some families couldn't afford the expense of a stone. Often when the second parent died, the children were in hard financial times. So if you visit the oldest graveyards and farms where you think there could be burials, look for huge pine trees. Our oldest cems here in Ohio have them and there are always bare spots underneath. I'm sure graves are there. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Ms2001@aol.com> To: <vashenan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 07, 2011 1:01 AM Subject: Re: [VASHENAN] Liggett-Frye marriage about 1845 >A lot of graves in those days were marked with nothing more than a rock > known as a 'field stone'. Miller & Sarah Jane Houck Died: 1 March 1937, Luray, Page County, Virginia Burial: Green Hill Cemetery, Luray, Page County, Virginia ------------------------- Silas Knox Wright, born in Shenandoah County, son of William Wright and Elizabeth Bushong, was a photographer with studios at 4 South Broad Street in Luray, Virginia. He is mentioned in at least two books. One was THE STORY OF THE SUMMERS-KOONTZ EXECUTION by Robert H. Moore II and the other was LURAY AND PAGE COUNTY REVISITED by Dan Vaughn. In the last mentioned book the following is said about Silas K. Wright: Page 7 "Two worlds met when the Shenandoah Valley Railroad reached Page in 1881. The railroad, in hiring William Lau to document the line, recorded grandeur images of the Queen Anne-style Luray Inn. Popular Luray photographer Silas K. Wright would partner as Wright and Crabill, but he is most known for his independent work at his 4 South Broad Street location in Luray. Operating under both Sunbeam Gallaries and the Excelsior Studious, his cabinet card work was widely regarded. His image of the Luray Inn burning is possibly his most recognizable." Note: In this book there is a photo that Silas K. Wright took of a Reunion of Elijah Viers White's Battalion which included Company E, 12 Virginia Cavalry, the company that Silas served in during the Civil War. -------------------------- We could not find Silas K. Wright in the 1880 census anywhere in Virginia but we did find this fellow in Kansas. Whether he is one and the same, is inconclusive at this point in time.We are thinking probably not him BUT if it is him, then he was married twice and the first wife disappeared. He then returned to Virginia and married Fannie Miller. R. Peck, of Pataskala, Ohio, who are cousins of Mr. Wright, heard in some way that he was suffering severely with cramp colic and at once left home to come down and see about him. Reaching Woodstock Wednesday evening they engaged a physician and drove out to Mr. Wright's home arriving there at a late hour of the night. They found mr. Wright sleeping soundly and perfectly well. an investigation at once took place and the whole matter proved to be a false alarm. George hadn't a bit of cramp colic and had only indulged a little two freely in water melons. He thinks the fellow who phones the news to Ohio got things mixed. Vashenan Listmates, We need to make a correction in the census record for 1850. Since we started researching George I. Wright, we realized that there is a transcription error on Ancestry for George. He is enumerated as a girl named Georgia in the 1850 census. So correct that census to read the following: 1850 Federal Census: Virginia 58th District, Shenandoah County Enumerated 20 August 1850 Page 61A Lines 22-28, HH 872/876 William Wright 44/Male/Farmer/$4000/VA Elizabeth Wright 39/Female/VA Andrew Wright 7/Male/VA Silas Wright 5/Male/VA GEORGE I WRIGHT 9mos/Male/VA Jacob Bowsenberger 20/Male/Miller/VA Eliza Brown 33/Female/VA --------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

William and Mary Liggett lived in the town of Edinburg. In the absence of gravestones, you might check with the cemeteries in Edinburg about their burial records. I once did a preliminary search for William Liggett and found a reference William Liggett, deceased, in the minutes of the Shenandoah County Court, May 1875 (Gen. Index to Minute Books, 1863-1882, Library of Va. microfilm 01000, roll 62 [Shenandoah Co.]) If you want to search the local newspapers for his death, that will limit the span from the June 1870 census to May 1875. -------------------------------------------------- From: <swe@cox.net> Sent: Thursday, January 06, 2011 11:49 PM To: <vashenan@rootsweb.com> Subject: [VASHENAN] Liggett-Frye marriage about 1845 > I have been unable to locate a marriage record (sometime around 1845) for > William Liggett and Mary Frye or burial information. > I found them in the 1850-1880 census records in Shenandoah County. One more piece of information. On the Liggett Forum a fellow by the name of Walter Farwell posted the following information. The Will states Peter of Shenandoah County, but like I said he seemed to have been in Frederick County in the 1800's. Gloria B. 1805: Will of PATRICK LIGGET of Carlisle, Cumberland co., PA: Wife Jane. Children: 1. Jacob (Deed book V,p.239, 12/21/1812 says he's of ROCKINGHAM CO., Virginia) 2. PETER (Deed book U, p.621, 3/27/1812 says he's of SHENANDOAH CO., Virginia) 3. Stephen (Deed book AA, p. 256, 4/29/1814 says he's of BROOKE CO., Virginia) 4. Daniel (no deed record found) 5-8: (No search was made trying to locate a deed record where these daughters were sell- ing their shares.)--Mary Filson, Sarah Ligget Haymaker, Jane Burns, Elizabeth Heft.

However, Peter Liggett is prevalent in Frederick County so possibly the Liggetts you are seeking were buried in Frederick County. Also in the 1870's a woman name Catharine Liggett gave a deposition in Loudoun County. You might want to check those out. Gloria B.
A lot of graves in those days were marked with nothing more than a rock known as a 'field stone'. They were not engraved or marked in any way and after a while everyone forgot about the grave and whoever might be buried there - especially if they were buried on family land and the land was sold. A diving rod can find graves but not tell you who is there. Now before you put your nose up and say that's just an old wives tale, let me tell you I have seen it work and I was a total non-believer too! Bev In a message dated 1/6/2011 11:49:26 P.M.
