Hi Chocy, Yes the tabebuia tree is one of the most beautiful when in bloom. Some trees have pink blossoms and some have yellow. The trees in my yard are the yellow ones. ------------------------- Here is what I have on Elizabeth Wendel, d/o Augustinus Wendel Sr and his wife Anna Margaretha Bucher. Elizabeth's father was Augustine Wendel Sr.. He immigrated to the New World 11 August 1732 on the Ship Samuel with his brothers, Valentine and Christopher and was naturalized with his brothers in Frederick County, Virginia 5 May 1747 the same place where his daughter Elizabeth married John Bushong. ---------------- >From a report to the Virginia Department of Transportation: Frederick County Road Orders 1743-1772 By Gene Luckman and Ann Brush Miller Virginia Transportation Research Council, Charlottesville, VA Published 1973 and June 2005 Page 47 21 August 1750 O. Augustinus was the old world name and it became Augustine in the new world. We have seen the Wendel name spelled Windle, Wendel and Wendell. In October of 2002, Russell and I had the privilege of seeing and holding this Bible at the Alderman Library at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. It is quite large and in remarkably good shape. The date in the Bible is 1702 and is printed in German. The family history pages hand written by Augustine Wendel are also in German. The inscriptions were translated into English and the librarian was kind enough to give us a photocopy of both the original German pages and the English translation. Here are the translations pertinent to this post: "In the year of Christ, Anno 1743, in the month of June 1, Augustinus Wendel married my wife, Anna Margaretha Bucher." "In the year of Christ 1758 on the 21st of January through God's blessing a little daughter was born into the world to me and in hold (baptism) she was given the name Elisabeta. Her sponsors were my brother Christopel Wendel and his wife. The heavenly sign was in the Crab." -------------- SHENANDOAH COUNTY VIRGINIA DEED BOOK L PAGE 335 Part of the settlement of the Will of Augustine Wendel/Windel Will Written 24 April 1792 Part of settlement of estate 21 April 1796 Deed of Release 9 October 1798 "Know all men by these presents that where as Augustine Windel Senior of Shenandoah County and Commonwealth of Virginia deceased by his last will and testament in writing bearing date the twenty fourth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety two did among other legalies therein contained give and bequeath unto each of us, Jacob Windle, Augustine Windel, John Windel and Mary the wife of Augustine Borden, ELIZABETH the wife of JOHN BUSHONG now deceased and Sarah the wife of Jacob Groves, all of the County and Commonwealth aforesaid the sum or legacy of forty two pounds eighteen shillings and six pence 2 and a half farthings current money each and of his said Will made and constituted Jacob Windell and Augustine Borden Executors as in and by the said Will may appear; NOW KNOW YE, that we the said Augustine Windell, John Windell and Mary the wife of Augustine Borden, Elizabeth widow and delict of John Bushong deceased and Sarah the wife of Jacob Groves Everyone of us and for ourselves do hereby confess and acknowledge that we and every one of us have had and received of and from the said Jacob Windell the legacy or sum of Forty two pounds eighteen Shillings and six pence an half penny so as aforesaid given and bequeathed to each of us by the said Augustine Windle and therefore we do by these presents acquiescence and discharge the said Jacob Windell of and from all required dues, duties and demands whatsoever which we and either of us ourselves our executors or administrators may have claim challenge or demand afor against the said Jacob Wendell his executors or administrations by Virtue of the last Will and testament of or out of the estate of the said Augustine Wendell deceased as aforesaid. Gloria, Thank you. I have Elilzabeth WENDLE daughter of Augustine WENDLE married to John BUSHONG, died ca 1796 born about 1756 in York Co., Pennsylvania AND I have Elizabeth WENDLE, no father married to Lt. John BUSHONG born 1732 as his second wife after Elizabeth SPANGLER which of course can not be right as I have her death in 1821. SO, I have had it there waiting to come back to it and never did ---- SO, am I correct in assuming that John BUSHONG is the son of Lt. John BUSHONG and Ellizabeth SPANGLER and would that be John Jacob BUSHONG? Good Afternoon fellow Listmates, Is anyone else looking forward to Spring? Brrrr it was cold this morning but the tabebuia trees are blooming in beautiful colors of pink and yellow so it looks like Spring but feels like winter. I have several rather large brick walls, and I am hoping that someone on the List will recognize some of these family names and have additional information that will help me hurdle the wall. They all concern the same family, different generations. The first brick wall concerns when Elizabeth (Wendel) Bushong died and where she is buried. The second brick wall concerns when her daughter Elizabeth (Bushong) Brown died and where she is buried. The third brick wall concerns when John Brown died and where he is buried. The fourth brick wall concerns when the daughter Eliza (Brown) Peer died and where she is buried. Thanks so much Judy! Gloria
The Edinburg Sentinel, Woodstock Times, Strasburg News, Marshall Chief Justice and I believe a newspaper in Front Royal were consolidated into the Northern Virginia Daily in 1930 by Mr. E. E. Keister. Years ago I was permitted to research the archives at the Northern Virginia Daily office in Strasburg. They had many issues of the above-mentioned newspapers, in very frail condition. I was told not too many years ago that they were going to be put on microfilm but I don't think this has happened to date. I believe the earliest Strasburg News papers they had there were about 1890, although I am sure they published before that. The Shenandoah Valley newspaper in New Market was kept in the Henkel family until later by John G. Miller, until it was consolidated with the Shenandoah Herald, owned by the Grabill family, when both papers were bought by the Byrd family. On a personal note, the obituary for Calvin Bushong appeared in the Apr. 13, 1928 edition of the Shenandoah Herald in Woodstock, per your inquiry. -----Original Message----- From: Chochoruss@aol.com Sent: Friday, February 04, 2011 5:59 PM To: vashenan@rootsweb.com Subject: [VASHENAN] Dates of Publication for The Strasburg News,Shenandoah County, VA Good Evening Vashenan Listmates, Does anyone know the dates of publication for The Strasburg News? Thanks Louise. I have an obit for Calvin Bushong that was clipped out of a 1928 newspaper and I cannot figure out what the newspaper publication had it. That's why I asked. Gloria B. ----------------- Here's the obit: CALVIN BUSHONG Calvin Bushong died at his home in Millersville, Maryland on 7th April 1928, aged 84 years 6 months. On Monday his body arrived on the noon train at Toms Brook, after which the funeral services were held at St. Johns Reformed Church at Harrisville, conducted by Rev. C. E. Robb. The body was laid to rest in the cemetery nearby. He was a consistent member of the Reformed Church from boyhood. He was a Confederate soldier and was held as a prisoner at Fort Delaware for 18 months until the end of the war. He never married but made his home with his father, the late Isaac Bushong and for a number of years lived at Toms Brook. Some years ago the family moved to Bunker Hill, Berkley County, West Virginia, then to Clearbrook, Virginia, and then to Millersville, Maryland. He leaves four half brothers and two half sisters, Thomas J. of Lansdowne, Maryland; Rev. Charles A. of Baltimore, Maryland; Rev. William E. of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania; Clinton of Millersville, Maryland; Mrs. Sophie Clark of Millersville, Maryland and Miss Elizabeth Bushong of Brooklyn, New York, who is a nurse in the United States Navy and during the world war had a great experience on the ocean. All of his close relatives attended the funeral excepting Thomas, Sophia and Elizabeth. The pallbearers were John W. Printz, W. O. Keller, D. J. Reynolds, Hubert Rickard, D. H. Keller and Angus Bauserman.

Hi, I know the Warren Sentinel was published prior to 1900 and I have never been able to locate all of these. I believe Front Royal VA library has some on computer. Let me know if you find any or any other newspaper. Loudoun County VA also had newspaper I believe called "Loudoun Times". It published articles on various people in Front Royal and the area. I never located many of these either. This seems to be where good genealogical info is recorded. I am interested in Boyd/Jennings info. These two families came from MD early 1800's. Could be earlier. Gloria, Thats true; but in addition many old settlers filed Old Frederick County, of which Shenandoah County is included, in the courthouses of Old Orange and Augusta Counties. I, personally, feel that many "brickwalls" will be scaled once all of these Chancery Cases get online. I have a "sale of property" where I have for years searched for the "purchase of the property" within the Old Frederick county and I suspect it will show up somewhere in these Augusta County Chancery Cases ---- I HOPE! Something to really look forward to in the future! What great news! Thanks Chocy for letting us know. This is going to be a very valuable tool as there are a lot of people who started in Augusta County and moved into the surrounding counties. Can't wait! Gloria B.
From: chocybrown@aol.com To: chocybrown@aol.com Subject: HOORAY: Augusta County Chancery Causes: Coming Attraction Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2011 15:57:42 -0800 The Library of Virginia's Local Records Services Branch was recently awarded a $150,000 grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) to support the scanning of the Augusta County Chancery Causes dating from 1745 to 1912. NHPRC, the grant funding arm of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), recognized the national significance of the Augusta County collection and validated the importance of and great benefits provided by LVA's ongoing digital chancery initiative. Chancery causes are invaluable to family historians and those interested in studying the history of a locality or region and its inhabitants. Chancery causes are legal proceedings that could not be decided readily by existing written laws. Decisions were made by a county justice or judge, not a jury, and on the basis of fairness, or equity, in place of the strictly formulated rules of common law. The Augusta County Chancery Causes are the most voluminous of any locality in Virginia and are one of the longest and most complete continuous collections of chancery records of any locality in the country. They document an unusually large geographic area. For the period 1745 to 1770, the boundaries of Augusta County encompassed most of western Virginia and what became the states of West Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, and Ohio, and parts of present-day Pennsylvania as far north as Pittsburgh. In fact, the Augusta County court held sessions at Fort Pitt in Pittsburgh when claim to that area, known as the West Augusta District, was in dispute. Even after the county was reduced to roughly its present size in 1778, the Augusta County Court continued to be the repository for chancery causes from 28 localities, which were heard by the Staunton Superior Court of Chancery from 1801 to 1831. When completed, the Augusta index and images will join the over 5 million chancery images from 48 localities already posted online. The scanning portion of the Augusta project is slated to begin in February 2011. Which Zachary Taylor do you refer to? The one that was our 12th President (1849-50) raised in Kentucky from infancy or the one that lived in Shenandoah County that I posted about? Gloria
Does anyone know if there is any connection between Zachary Taylor and either James V. Taylor or James M. Taylor (listed on this e-mail?) I am trying to trace back from Zachary Taylor. We think his father was James Taylor. Thanks, Mary Lou Garlock (great granddaughter of Zachary Taylor, granddaughter of Oscar Taylor - Ft. Valley, VA.)
