Don, Will add to you to my prayers for complete recovery!! Take good care of yourself! Sue
Don, I don't know you, as I'm very new to this site, been here for about 3 days or so. But ... obviously you are going to be missed very much so I gather you make a huge contribution to this list. Hope all goes smoothly, and with as little discomfort as possible so you can get back to life's pleasures and all of us ASAP. May God, the comforter, be with you. Good luck Don, we will be waiting for your return. Robert Crawford
Hello everyone, Thanks to a great doctor, and NO symptoms, I will be out of commission for awhile as I will be having coronary bypass surgery at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20. As I mentioned, I had no symptoms - so if you haven't had a checkup lately, you may want to. The list and the website will be in the capable hands of our own Alley Blackford until my recovery is complete. Alley will also be sending you a post-surgery update tomorrow. You aren't going to get rid of me that easily! Hope to be back online in about a week, but not up to full speed for several more weeks after that. I will get back with you SOON! Coral, Thanks for summarizing "The Frontiersmen" by Allan W. Eckert. I have, and have read "The Wilderness War", both of which are part of the "Narratives of America" series. A synop in the front of the book I have states, "From master storyteller Allan W. Eckert comes the highly acclaimed exicting, and authentic saga of our Nation's conquest". The books in this series are: The Frontiersmen Wilderness Empire The Conquerors The Wilderness War Gateway to Empire Twilight Of Empire The Frontiersmen - "A vigorour, engrossing narrative of the men who penetrated and settled the wilderness of mid-America" Chicago Tribune Wilderness Empire - "With this magnificent volume...Eckert has come to full maturity. His canvas is nothing less than the French and Indian wars, portrayed in panoramic breadth and masterful detail. His research is immense, his command of a complex and evolving scene...is superb" Publishers Weekly The Conquerors - "Not since Francis Parkman, a century ago, has there been a more fascinating (and detailed) account of Pontiac's conspiracy...Vivid narrative history." The New York Times The Wilderness War - "The Wilderness War... brings to crackling, dangerously vibrant life the merciless and bloody events of the first of the American Civil Wars." Detroit Free Press Gateway To Empire - "An absorbing blockbuster...This is a vast wilderness drama held together by the stories of men, women, children caught up in the inexorable turns of history." Publishers Weekly Twilight Of Empire - "Eckert writes in a fictional style, making heavy use of documents and diaries and creating dialogue (out of actual recorded comments) so that, although this is history, it is swiftly paced with a dramatic flair." Kirkus Reviews. Also by Allan W. Eckert, but not of the series are: "A Sorrow In Our Hearts", and "That Dark And Bloody River" ----- Original Message ----- From: <CORALAA@aol.com> To: <VASHENAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 17, 2003 1:31 PM Subject: [VASHENAN] Re: [OLD-FREDERICK-CO-VA] NAIN, FREDERICK CO., VIRGINIA > I am currently reading a book I picked up at a yard sale called THE > FRONTIERSMEN by Allan W. I had a feeling there were more books by this author. All it said in this book was the Wilderness War. My husband already says that I "spend too much time with dead people." He is probably right. I am addicted, I admit it. "My name is Coral and I am a genealogist." Are there meetings to go to or a patch to put on. he needs a genea-non meeting to help him understand! I am just being "funny" as he is not against what I do. In fact he reads everything I write on my family and I also do his family. But sometimes......... So I will ride my exercise bike and read. Coral in California by way of Denmark, Ireland, Virginia, Nebraska, Colorado, Washington State and points in-between.
I am seeking the parents and places of birth of John Griffith and his wife, Catharine (maiden name not known). Also very much interested in their origin before coming to Shenandoah (present-day Page) County, Va., in the mid 1780s. John and Catharine Griffith arrived in Shenandoah (now Page) County around 1784. He and his son-in-law, John Valentine (wife Mary), jointly purchased property near Hawksbill Creek in Oct. 1786. He later sold this property and purchased land on Dry Run, located southeast of present-day Luray, where he died in 1820 and Catharine in 1824. Besides Mary, other children were David, John, William, Sally, Rachel, Elizabeth (m. John Rickabaugh), Nancy, Eleanor and Catharine. Joe Baker
I am currently reading a book I picked up at a yard sale called THE FRONTIERSMEN by Allan W. Eckert. The book is stated as "fact, not fiction," and start around 1755 in Fauquier Co. Then goes to Kentucky. It is very interesting and provides a background for what times were like in those areas. It is well documented and lists lots of sources. Real names are used and a lot of material comes from diaries of the time. I am about 3/4 the way through and read every minute I can sneak in. I think it is a great source for anyone searching that area in that time period. I have not looked but it is probably on Amazon.com or ebay for a used price. It was first printed in 1967. If you like history and want to know how they got from here to there this will answer a lot of those questions. Coral in California
I am so far from an authority on the rules of antiquity for taxing, etc., its ridiculous. I know that if you owned land in more than one county, you would appear on both county records, no matter which county was your residence. Why the wife and husband appeared to be in differing counties, I would have no idea. Also, after a certain age, the court would often remove you from Taxing responsibilities. Before the Revolution, the Taxing responsibilities were given to the Parishes. To be on a Poll list, you had to be a property holder. You probably already know all of this. But to vote in those days, you had to be a property holder. I'll bet there is someone who knows the answers. Wish I knew more. I reviewed a file at NARA for my 1812 ancestor. No application, just a detailed letter. There may have been missing letters, though. The records were not secured. I'm glad I did, though, it was very revealing. Rick, Ask for ALL RECORDS and they will send what they have. I have not done this for a while, but it has been my experience that they are very good about helping. Rick, depends if the record exists. For Rev War, the widow's application wasn't found but I know she got something because the pension was awarded after the death of the veteran. For WW2, widow's application plus a lot of other papers (testaments she was the wife) were included. Some records have been lost, apparently. When applying for pension papers from NARA, be sure to request ALL of the additional pages found. Alley ----- Original Message ----- > Does anyone know if a widow's pension application would be included with her > husband's military records?? At the NARA website, I have ordered two forms: NATF Form 85 (Veterans Pension Records) NATF Form 86 (Request for Military Records) Both of these forms are for early records, pre-WW1 Rick
Don't know about widow's pension application for 1812 - but it is included with Rev. War records.
