Hi, I am hoping someone may have a copy of this book published in 1978 and is being reprinted for sale at Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, MD. I have many relatives in the area of Shenandoah and Warren County Virginia and wanted to know if someone who has this book can tell me if any Mathews or Jennings are listed? I also have G.G. Grandmother Rachel Kellar from Shenandoah County who married Benjamin Mathes or Mathews and she later married a Elijah Roy. Regards, Louise Henry --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Hello all, For those who plan to attend Shenandoah County Heritage Day on April 12, Judy Stickley will have copies of "Someone You Knew" available that day. If you are not familiar with Judy's books, they contain thousands and thousands of obituaries from the years 1869 - 1989. If you have a lot of ancestors in Shenandoah County, these books are invaluable. My copies never are on the bookshelf because I use them so much. More information can be found at <http://www.rootsweb.com/~vashenan/genbook.html> - right at the top of the page, but be sure to scroll down and see what other excellent books are available for Shenandoah County researchers. Hey Gang, A couple of years ago, as a kind of last ditch effort to locate any photographs of my great grandparents, David and Georgianna Lambert, I snail mailed dozens of Lamberts in PA and did an extensive e-mail search for descendants of Harry Lambert, son of Will Gillock and Matty Lambert. Harry died in Pennsylvania. My search was a complete flop. About the same time, Alley posted the photograph of my Grandfather, William David Lambert on the ShenCo website. Well, guess what!! Jim Lambert, Grandson of Harry Lambert e-mailed me today. Jim found the photograph of his "Uncle Bill" at the ShenCo website!!!!! Although our correspondence has just begun, I have high hopes again, thanks to our wonderful website. Rick Monroe
Hello all! The Shenandoah County GenWeb site has been updated with new Rosenberger and Good family photos as well as some Good family obituaries. Links to these items can be found at <http://www.rootsweb.com/~vashenan/cem/whatsnew.html>. You will also notice that the "Show Us Your Ancestors" page has a new look. This section is growing to the point where it will soon become multiple alphabetical pages and this new look will better allow that to happen. Hope you like it, as it is more consistent in format with the other pages on the site. It is great to be back to my "normal" life and thanks to all of you for your encouragement and support through my recent and ongoing convalescence. Hope to see you all at Shenandoah County Heritage Day on April 12 in Edinburg. Within the next few days, I plan to add a list of scheduled exhibitors for that event. I have much information on the Parrett family of Shenandoah Valley. I will share with all interested. My question is..... Samuel Parrett married Eve Custard in 1775 in Rockingham Co. Who are Eve's parents? I have read info on much of the family who went to Perry Co. OH with the Parretts but don't know where Eve fits. Any clues appreciated. Thanks. Marcia Loudon jloudon@nc.rr.com
Hello, I have some Spencer Rileys listed in my cd index. Before I spend too much time on it, and it isn't anything you need, here is what I think I may be able to find. A Spencer Riley b. 1810 VA is on WFT Cd 40-41 (which means there should be lineage. A Spencer Riley is found on 1850 and 70 census A Spencer Riley is also found on two marriage cds....where was he married? A Spencer Riley is also found on a mortality cd, 1850-1880.... If you are interested in any of it, let me know and please tell me a wife's name, so I will be able to narrow it down. Thanks. Maggie, I have quite a bit of information on the Keller family. Can you tell me anything more about your Martin? Do you know any of his siblings, wife, etc? Will be glad to help you if I can. Kris/Doeeyes83@aol.com
Hi. I am new to the list, and I hope I have the right one! If not, I apologize. I am desperately looking for the father of MARTIN KELLER, my 5th ggrandfather. He was supposedly born 1835 in Shenandoah. Some sources say that George Keller was his father, but the only info I can find on a George Keller with a Martin as a son, is that he immigrated from Bern, Switzerland in 1680 to PA, then moved to Shenandoah. The age difference is what is questionable. If there is anyone out there who might point me in the right direction, I would be grateful. Thank you very much, Maggie, Pittsburgh
Hi all Any Ludwig/Ludwick researchers out there?? or anyone up for a puzzle? My goal: to find the parents of my gr gr grandfather (Joseph Ludwig) born 1810 in VA. He married Sarah BOUDE 1842 Shenandoah although it has been spelled wrong in the abstracts. I have ruled out some Ludwigs and am now trying to discover the name of the male child born abt 1810 of Philip Ludwig and Martha Dodson On the 1810 census there is George Lutewick 1 male 10-16, 3 males 16-26 and 1 male 45 and over (George) 1 female 10-16, 1 female 45 and over and close by Philip Lutewick 2 males under 10 (one is Jacob born 1808 and ? born 1810) 1 male 26-46 (Philip) 1 female 26-45 (Martha Dodson) They married Aug 1805 in Shenandoah Joseph Lutewick 1 male 26-45 (Joseph); 1 female under 10 and 1 female 26-45 I haven't found a marriage of a Joseph Ludwig in Shenadoah for this time period There is a Joseph Ludwig and a Catharina having children baptized in 1800, 1815 and 1817 Are Philip and Joseph sons of George? or ?? A George Ludwig was on the 1789 and 1799 tax lists in 1789, 1 white male over 16--must be George in 1799 3 white males over 16 George and.....?? in 1820 George is living alone and 45 and over which would make him at least 55+ born 1765 or earlier next to him a Joseph 2 males under 10, 1 male 16-26 (can't be the Joseph from 1810 census) 1 female 16-26 and not too far away a Joel Ludwig 2 males under 10, 1 male 26-45 3 females under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 26-45 and near him Philip Ludwig 3 males under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 26-45 (Philip) 2 females under 10, 1 female 26-45 (Martha Dodson) I have followed up on this Philip and the 1830 census leads to more mystery Barbara Brea CA

St. Matthews Church in New Market was originally the Davidsburg Church. A brief history of the church is in Wayland's History of Shenandoah County. Today it is the Reformation Evangelical Lutheran Church still on the same location. Lewis H. Zirkle
Davidsburg Church Baptisms 1786 - 1845, New Market, VA, Transcriptions and Translations by John Stewart and Klaus Wust, 1983; I think this book may be available from the Shenandoah Historical Society. In addition to the church records, the authors write of the history of the church. Thanks folks, for sharing your knowledge, regarding Rev. Henkel. I discovered that the ShenCo website has a link to local churches. I found Rev. Henkel mentioned in relationship to several churches. Three seemed to tie into my elusive Corder families and one ties into a bondsman to a Corder marriage--Henry Reader who m. a dau of Geo Dellinger. Can anyone tell me about Davidsburg and where it might have been located? If I followed the material regarding the churches of ShenCo, then it looks like the Davidsburg Church built by Rev. Henkel split to become the Emmanuel Church and St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church of New Market. Are there church records available somewhere from the Davidsburg Church or the Emmanuel / St. Matthew Lutheran churches of New Market? I'd be looking for records between abt 1809 -1820. Looking for church records is something new for me, so any guidance will be helpful. Thanks, Nancy Santa Fe, NM
The marriage occurred on Friday, August 4, 1809 (pages 173, 296)--a list of marriages by Paul Henkel is in an appendix in the newly published book: The Autobiography and Chronological Life of Reverend Paul Henkel (1754-1825" From the Unpublished Manuscripts. . .Translated from Original Sources by Reverend William J. Finck, edited by Melvin L. Miller and Published by Reverend Anthony Jacob Henckel Family National Association, Inc. 2002 He ministered to different churches in Shenandoah, Page, Rockingham, Augusta Counties as well as Piedmont NC and Point Pleasant on the Ohio River. Nancy, In "A History of Shenandoah County, Virginia" by John Wayland, page 608, it states that "Paul Henkel was born in Rowan County, North Carolina in 1754 and he and his family refugeed from Catawba Indians to New Market. He established churches in Augusta County, VA., and was one of the founders of the Lutheran synod of North Carolina. He was a missionary in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee." If he had a permanent church in Shenandoah County it would have been one of the Lutheran churches. In the book he is not listed as being with any of the churches. Good evening, The marriage record of William Corder m. to Cathrine Philips simply stated that the marriage was registered--no witnesses. The ShenCo marriage bonds for 1809 seem to have vanished. So now, I want to see if I can find any church records on this couple. The VA Genealogist listed Rev. Henkels marriages in Vol. 17. Can anyone tell me what church Rev. Henkels' records might have been recorded? Nancy Santa Fe, NM
We should all write! One thing that would be worth mentioning is how it would affect tourism and $$$$$ in the state. This approach may help. Since Virginia was settled so soon in the history of this country, MANY ancestors come from Virginia. So many researchers travel here spending dollars on hotels, gasoline, food, etc. I can't remember which is 1st and 2nd, but gardening and genealogy are the top hobbies in the whole country! And we like to spend money on our hobbies. If the state/counties would just bit the bullet and spend the money to scan the information to put in the internet and on CDs then they wouldn't have such facilities, storage, or manpower problems. These are not just papers, but public records and historical documents and should be protected.

One of the other issues to take into account in the spelling of names is the literacy of the individual. If the name was common, like Williams or Jones, the spelling usually remained the same, but not always. With more unusual names, if the individual was illiterate, they had to rely on others for the spelling, which could vary even in the same immediate family. Plus, spelling was not standardized until fairly recently, so in other words - anything goes. Foreign names can really be a challenge. I've seen the name "Valencic" spelled "Wallenchich" with Valencic being the "true" spelling and Wallenchich being the phonetic spelling of the name as it was originally pronounced. (the name is Slovene) Now the Valencic family pronounces it "Valensik" and wouldn't expect the Wallenchich name to have any connection to them, without knowing the original pronunciation. So basically, know all possible pronunciations of the name, and take the literacy of the individual into account as well.
