    3. We currently have online the 1789 & 1799 Shenandoah Personal Property A & B Tax Lists (4 tax lists in all) for anyone to use. These are the actual images from the microfilm. These tax lists have been indexed. The names in the index are linked to the page of the tax list that the name appears on. Go to: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~ysbinns/vataxlists/index.htm and scroll down to Shenandoah County in the County Tax List Table and click on the county link. This takes you to the county page where you can access the individual indexes and images. 3. I am interested in finding the location of my ancestor's, Nicholas DRUCK, farm. He bought the land (70 acres) in 1793 from Anthony & Clara RODENHEIFFER. It mentions "the drains of Stony Creek" "Cats Hollow" and "May's Run". In 1813 they added 118 acres from John & Barbara MILLER, 1/10 of land of David RODENHEIFFER. After Nicholas and his wife Susannah died the farm (the 70 acres) was owned (1848) by their daughter Rebecca and Emmanual RINEHART. I am guessing that the other acres (118) went to their oldest son George DRUCK. I think (not positive) that in 1851 the RINEHARTS sold the 70 acres to Benjamin & Lucy IRWIN. Can anyone give me any clues to the location of this land? Thanks, Carole Trook-Hacker

    2. Netti Schreiner-Yantis and Florene Speakman Love have published "The Personal Property Tax Lists for the Year 1787 for Shenandoah County, Virginia." The publisher shown is Genealogical Books in Print, Springfield in Print, Springfield, Va. I do not know if this book is in print or if the publisher is still in business. Perhaps someone will let us know. The 1787 Shenandoah County Personal Property Tax Lists are important in it was the only year in which local tax commissioners were required by law to call on each person at that person's residence. Before this (and also afterwards, I think) the people took their lists to the commissioner. JB

    3. Are the Shenandoah Co. Personal Property Tax Records on-line anywhere at this point? I would like to conduct the same type of search on Henry's in Shenandoah Co. from 1785 - 1810. -----Original Message----- From: GCline8181@aol.com [mailto:GCline8181@aol.com] Sent: Saturday, March 01, 2003 1:53 AM To: VASHENAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [VASHENAN] Tax List Eugene I can answer part of your question. I know nothing about a collection of tax papers in Richmond. I am the person who prepared the Tax Records- Cline 1782-1820. The data that is embodied in the report that is posted in the Shenandoah County Website was taken from microfilm rolls that I got from the Morman Church records titled "Personal Property Tax Records." My quest was to list every person named Cline/Kline who lived in Shenandoah County during the years 1782 and 1820. In doing so, I garnered a large amount of information on my family. One important part of those early records that is not well known, except for those who have studied them, is that in the years between 1786 and 1796 the tax rolls listed not only the head of household but also listed by name all other white souls living in that household. Its too bad that this practice was discontinued in 1796, since it was an invaluable source of genealogical records not found elswhere. From this tax study I was able to connect my ancestor John Cline with Michael Cline and through the data involved in this tax study I was able to make a positive connection between Michael and his son George Cline through the tax records in the years 1817 and 1818. Then by tracing descendants of this line and having DNA tests done I was able to establish that John Cline and Michael Cline were brothers. This all came about by hours spent these two microfilm rolls from the Morman Church. I hope this explanation of my part in a study of tax records is of help to you. 2. Hello Glenn, In my preparation of the cemetery lists for the web site a few years ago, I ran into som alternate names of various cemeteries. One of those cemeteries with such a name was Clover Hill Cemetery in the Saumsville Area. The alternate name? Miley Layman Cemetery. The list can be found at <http://www.rootsweb.com/~vashenan/cem/mlayman.html>. In fact, the first name I found for this cemetery was "Miley Layman", but later on I found that the more common name was Clover Hill. Just had to dig around a bit to find that! This has led me to another search for heirs of that bro., Thomas Hicks, in nearby counties. (Hardly begun) It certainly gave me information I didn't have before. Shirley S.

    3. In the Virginia State Library in Richmond, Virginia one will find "Personal Tax Papers" - hand written - for Shenandoah County, Virginia for the years 1782 thru 1793. The explanation of same is that any male over 21 years was required to pay a "poll tithable tax" and a tax on his cattle and horses. If the man had a son, that son had to be paid for also upon reaching age 16. The father would pay the sons tax until the son reached 21 years of age and then he (the son) would pay his own tax. Way back yonder in the early 1970's when I first started looking into family background I saw these TAX PAPERS in Richmond. I see that the 1783 County wide list is available - also the Cline and Job families - on the Shenandoah Web site. My question - are these records available either in the Net or on microfilm. Thanks.......Eugene

I believe there is another film for later years, but my family left Shenandoah County by then. I use them as a base line to see who was there at different times. Does anyone know what place the "Fork" is in reference to and if so what township this would have been in? Any information will be appreciated. Thanks.

    2. Forwarded to me from the Virginia State Coordinator for the GenWeb project. Please be aware of this scam! --------------------------------------------------------- Hi Everyone: The old genealogy scam is back. www.genseekers.com Behind the password protection are links to the free genealogy on-line. There is no content of their own. In order to get the "5-day free trial" you have to surrender a credit card or bank account number. You have to cancel within 5 days or you get dinged. Guess what? The cancellation e-mail bounces. Does this surprise you? One person who recently fell for the come-on had his/her account dinged not once, but twice. It is time to remind folks on your state and county mailing lists about these scoundrels. It has been a couple of years since we have mentioned this. Permission is granted to pass this on.
