If you read all the notes, you will see what I have and what I do not. His birth in "perhaps Northampton" is speculation. There is a story about Adam that connects him to Northampton Co, with a line of ancestors having migrated from Schohalie, NY and Germany. However, I think it's just wishful thinking, which I'm trying to clear up by establishing a preceding family in Shenandoah. Tom

3. Tom, You might check the RootsWeb WorldConnect site for Adam Richart. There's a posting for Adam Richart/Rickert (b. abt. 1765 in North Hampton, Pennsylvania, d. abt 1837 in Letart, WVA) wife's name Elizabeth. The daughter of this couple, Elizabeth Rickard, married Anthony Roush (b. 23 Jan 1792 Shenandoah Co., Va) Elizabeth Rickard Roush was buried Rickard Cemetery, Mason Co., WVA. I found other children for this couple listed on other websites. You might be able to obtain more information from the individual who posted the information: Vicki Ewy <davic@lvcm.com> Another effective search strategy that might help you is to go to Google.com and do an advanced search. >From the main Google page click on "advanced search" Enter your information in the fields as follows: "with all of the words" ENTER : Adam genealogy "with at least one of the words" ENTER: Rickard Richart Rickert Richerd Reichart [or any other spellings you've discovered] Click on "Google Search". This will bring up 2,320 hits that include websites that mention Adam R.... and genealogy. If you leave the search term "genealogy" out of the first field it will bring up 34,300 hits...you choose. This strategy will likely give you still more alternate spellings, as some immigrant named Reigart will have had a descendant mentioned who spelled the name Rickert, thus causing your search to pick Reigart's page up, too. Note: Add the phrase "Mason Co." or "Mason County" in the field for "with the exact phrase" and you'll cut the hits down to only 37-38, but they'll be more likely to be the people for whom you're searching. This will also give you 30+ people to contact who are doing research on your family line. Using the advanced search will allow you to expand or restrict your searching. Give it a try. Good luck. 3. Ozzie, Sorry, it appears your John Robinson is abt. one generation before my current info. I believe I am connected to John Thomas Robinson, b. abt 1780, the father of my ggg-father, Richard J. Robinson, b. abt. 1812. Richards siblings appear to be as listed: Beverly W., Arthur, Samuel, William, Joseph Lewis, John and would have been born abt. early 1800s. I guess John Thomas' father was also a John Robinson born abt. 1738, married a Miss Page, then Miss Lucy Smith (m. 1757). This John would be abt. 10 years off from your John, also with a different wife. I guess your John could be a brother or cousin to William Robinson, b. 1709, Middlesex Co., VA. Unfortunately, I have not acquired the book, This Robinson Line, that I referenced to you. This was provided by another lister and I have not been able to locate it yet. It relates the relations of Christopher Robinson of "Hewick", in the area of Middlesex Co, VA. so if your Robinson line is found here there may be a relation. Beverly W. is not dirrectly in my line, being a sibling to Richard J., my ggg-father. I just assumed this was a sister, but perhaps it is a brother. Would appreciate any info you have on this individual or others listed in your book. Beverly, Richard and siblings and father John Thomas are found in Hampshire Co., VA 1840 census. Households of Richard J. (misprint Robert J.) and Joseph Lewis (w/ father John Thomas) are found in 1850 census for Harrison Co., VA. Not sure if Beverly also migrated with them or remained in Hampshire? Don't know if I sent you the following before from 1850 Harrison Co. ceunsus: 21st district, enumerated 29 July 1850 Ancestry Image 272 Roll M432_950, Page 135 Robert J. Ohio (bordering Guernsey Co., OH) abt. 1854. Joseph L. also reported in one history source to have moved here, but not sure of date. He may have stayed in Harrison Co., VA for a while as his wife passed away in Harrison in 1864 and there one son appears to have stayed in this area: John Lewis, son of John Thomas Robinson, was born in Frederick county, Virginia, 1827. He came to Harrison county in 1849. He was a shoemaker and merchant, sometime associated with E. W. Tinsman as Tinsman & Robinson, and for many years conducted the principal shoe store in Clarksburg. He married Mary E. Waters, born February 25, 1829, in Montgomery county, Maryland. One child by this union, Paul Monroe; the mother died May 12, 1864. Of the parentage of Mary E. (Waters) Robinson it may be said that she was the daughter of Edward B. and Lucretia (Gardner) Waters. The Waters family is numerous and has been of some prominence in Ferderick and Montgomery counties, Maryland, since the formation of the counties. The parents of Mary E. Waters both died when she was a child and she was reared by her uncle, James Waters, of Frederick county, Maryland. 3. Tom, Please include this as only speculation. In the 1793 personal property tax list for the big valley of Shenandoah County, there was a listing for Adam R***art, where the * is a letter too badly smeared to read. However, I believe I can identify the third * as either an "h" or a "k". This list is one where there is a strong possibility that people whose tax lists were received on the same day lived close to one another. On the same day as Adam R***art (April 18) were Jacob Roof, John Roush Senr, George Ruddell, Walter Newman, Mounce Bird, Daniel Brannerman (Jr and Sr), Rudolph Kagey, Daniel Kingary, Solomon Kingary, and many others. The ones I named are all names familiar within maybe five miles of New Market. You might try getting the microfilm for the lists from the LDS and taking a look at other years. 1793 is the only one I happen to be able to look at now. Those are good years because Tavener Beale took some of the lists and he was obsessively thorough. If you find your Adam after 1795, I think, please let me know and I can help locate him even better then as the lists for a few years were based on militia company areas. Please treat this as only a maybe. There are Adam Reinharts running around in Shenandoah County about that time. As it is I get the Shenandoah posts in digest form, so my 'Eureka !!!' is doubly-delayed. I need to spend a good deal more time working out the data you already sent, but I wanted to rush off a Thankyou! If Sam (d. 1815 in Bedford) is indeed, the son of an Alvin & Sarah Rust Claytor with antecedents in Virginia, this has just got to be a parallel line perhaps with a common ancestor; my ggggggg-grampa Sam Clayton (christened 30 Sep 1689-died bef 16 Aug 1735) who m. Elizabeth PENDLETON lived near Tappahannock in Essex Co. - a hop-skip across the river from the first Thomas you list in Washington Parish, Westmoreland Co. Va. Would Sam's father Sam & Susannah (probably MORRIS) Clayton be their common ancestors? This Sam died abt 1702 & Susannah d. 6 Nov 1710 at the home of her daughter Mary, who had married Robert Coleman (1682-1748). One of the first surprises in your work was the GOFF surname which shows up in Crawford County, Illinois, where my CLAYTON branch settled before coming to Green County, Wisconsin and after a generation in Bourbon County, Kentucky. I don't know Shirley, I have collected a number of things that just don't fit in my direct CLAYTON line, but do seem to have some connection. Offhand, a "Coleman CLAYTON/CLAYTOR" or two, three? which may or may not be directly related as my Shenandoah County Saml Clayton, jr.'s brother was actually named Robert Coleman Clayton. Knowing that those latter 2 were from Shenandoah, I'm trying to determine if they were acquainted with the Richarts prior to moving west. The name is also known as Rickart, Rickert, and Reichart. I believe Adam was migrating from PA, and perhaps just passing through Shenandoah, staying for a relatively few years. His first wife, Elizabeth, died there in 1797, near New Market (so the story goes). He then married Catherine. Some sons were Jacob, Michael, John, Joseph and George. I've seen a Jacob Rickard in the 1820 Shenandoah census, and I suspect he might have been related, but I can't find the root family. There was a Richart/Reichart family in the Germanna settlement, but I can't trace them forward. Any help or even speculation would be greatly appreciated. Tom

This is explained on the website. The warrant, if awarded after the death of the veteran, usually has the heirship on the face of the warrant. If transferred for consideration, the assignee is stated. If the right to land was assigned in more than one tract and there were several assignees/transfers, this information might also be on the back of the warrant. This assigneeship/transfer of right could happen at the entry, and the survey and these are noted on the warrant or by separate papers. The warrant was to have been sent to the land office when the last survey of land allowed by the warrant was sent to the land office to be granted. ( I have seen one surveyor's note to the land office that the Warrant XXXX had been returned with a precious survey.) The assignee(s) noted are those who had, for consideration to the warrantee or former assignee, the right to the land on the warrant allowing them to proceed with the land acquisition process. A contract could be written to sell the land after the survey was sent to the Land office and before the grant has been received by the grantee. I have seen one of these in county court records. The search has just begun! Go to the Library of Virginia website http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/mil/index.htm Search each of the 3 RW databases. Note on the "cards" in the database when there are "images". In Revolutionary War Bounty Warrants: Philip Clayton (signature) served under Muhlenburg; Clayton gives an authorization to LT Charles Stickley.....Shenandoah Co surnames. In another BG James Wood certifies a Philip Clayton served and deserves additional land. The site stopped responding;, I do not know what the other names or RW databases might show. Now use the Land Office database at the Library of Virginia and search for every new surname and waterway and any other descriptive word that might have been on the original LVA index cards. You are looking for neighbors and friends and in-laws that you know. Watch for the Warrant # in the grants. Note the grantee(s) and date of grant. Now a trip/or search & copy request is in order to The Library of Virginia. In the Manuscript reading room request by grantee and date the files of the "Plats and Certificates" collection. If you want a copy of the back of a warrant used in KY, the KY Land Office website above gives information to order those copies. In the future images of these backs may be on the website. Enjoy the search. I have proven that an ancestor did not "touch" a tract that local family have believed he entered. I also have identified a grant for the only land a person later sold. When you can not find a grantor/seller buying the land. consider the following: 1. He acquired it by grant from the state, proprietor, the Crown. 2. He got it through probate. 2. The deed was not recorded; it may be in the "loose papers" at the court house. 3. The transfer was written on the warrant of the former owner's grant or deed. 4. The deed is recorded in the mother county. 5. The deed is recorded in the county to which the seller migrated. 6. Check all court levels in all counties the grantor and grantee lived. A few of these are private papers and not expected to be found in the public records. A deed is the property of the buyer/grantee. It was signed in person by all indicated in the recording. Watch the margin of the deed recording books for "examined & delivered". When this is usually there and one is missing it may indicate that original deed is in the loose papers at the courthouse. I trace a person who was a witness to a deed that was not "delivered". What a find to get another signature for him and in association with known family! A speaker one said that she had proven more connections by land than marriage. Enjoy the land search. Phyllis Vannoy Spiker

3. The suggestion to always include the tax commissioner's name is good; I have several times regretted that I had not done that. Only after repeated mistakes (I learn verrry slowly) did I catch on that different tax commissioners had pecularities that were important. One of them would write down every tithable male in the house, one collected lists on muster days, one collected on Sundays, one was quite forgetful and would skip people, and so on. I wish I had your good advice when starting out. 3. Kathy, Can you shed any light on three questions: 1. When did the McCarty's leave Shenandoah County on their way to Gallia County? 2. How did they go, i.e., did they stop along the way? 3. Lewis in History of Jay County, Indiana, says Mary McCarty married Abraham Darst (Paul's brother). Do you have any info that might bear on that? 1. Re: [VASHENAN] CLAYTORs
2. Shirley Starks
3. This is not my line. So, I may be tripping over my fingers and embarrass myself. I have 2 pages of Claytors indexed in a family book. (Yes, CLAYTOR with an R) There are about 8 Samuel Claytors & a few John Claytors, etc. I believe they are yours. I'm hopeful for you, because Bedford Co. is mentioned. If so, I have some of his history in the Rust family book. Warning.. I've abreviated. Please forgive typos. Its long. And no doubt, you already have this. RUST OF VIRGINIA, by Ellsworth Marshall Rust Pg 87 through several pages. "Thomas Claytor, II, whose will, Dec 27, 1750, was proven Sept. 28, 1756, m'd before 1730, Ann Mothershead, dau. of John & Elizabeth Mothershead, Westmoreland Co, VA [D & W, vol. 13, p. 38, Westmoreland Co.] His father of the same name was a proprietor of a land grant in Washington Parish 1718, m'd Katherine, whose will June 23, 1720, was proven Sep 28, 1720. Thosmas Claytor, II, had brother William who died before his father, and sister, Jane who m'd Carter & sister Ann, who m'd Goff. Alvin Claytor had brothers John, Thos, Wm., & Samuel, and sisters, Elizabeth & Anne. Thomas Claytor, II, father of Alvin was educated at Cambridge, Eng. (Pemborke College) about 1720. [Mrs. Stannard: "Colonial Virginia", p.292] Ann Mothershead, mother of Alvin Claytor was dau. of John Mothershead and wife, Elizabeth. His will Nov. 13, 1730, was proven May 26, 1731, Westmoreland Co. An inventory of the estate of Alvin Claytor was made in Westmoreland Co, Nov 22, 1755, and a supplementary inventory was filed Sep 28, 1762, there appears the item: "1756--to funeral expenses" and "By crop of tobacco made the year he died". In the same court, on Aug. 24, 1761, certain money and slaves were allotted to Samuel Walker in right of his wife's dower in the said Claytor's personal estate --one third, with two-thirds to Alvin Claytor's children. An inventory of the estate of Alvin Claytor was taken in BEDFORD CO, by Humphrey Pope, Laws, Butler, and Humphrey Quisenbury and returned amounting to 154 lbs-19-2. [I & A Bk 3; p.66, Bedford Co.] The Bedford Co Court on Oct 13, 1775, appointed Richard Stith, gent. Henry Terrill, and George Caldwell to state and settle accounts between Samuel Walker and the orphans of Alvin Claytor, and to return an account thereof to the court. Presumably, these children of Alvin Claytor, SAMUEL, and John had at that time reached their majority. [Order bk 1774-82, p.103, & Will Bk A, vol. 1. Re: [VASHENAN] 1786-1792 CLAYTON & PRICE & WILLIAMs
2. The headings for Virginia Auditor of Public Accounts 1790 Personal Property Tax List (PPT) for Shenandoah Co. are from left to right across the columns: Dates of receiving from individuals Persons named No. White Tithables No. Black Tithables Do. over 16 years No. Blacks over 12 years & under 16 years No. Horses Mares Colts & Mules No. Studd Horses Prices Covering at per season FYI 1790 is an Alpha list and neighbors may be determined by consulting the complete list and sorting by date. Using a perpetual calendar, one can determine the weekend days and other days when the Tax Collector may not have "visited". According to Schreiner -Yantis, The 1787 Census of Virginia, page xiv "Tithable - Subject or liable to payment of tithes; a person or thing that is tithable. The age at which white males were tithable at the county level was 16 years; at the state level, the age was 21 years. The county tax paid for the political operation of the county and for the care of the poor; the amount of tax varied from county to county and from year to year in the same county as the method of arriving at the amount of tax was to add the year's expenditures and divide this by the number of tithes. All paid the same amount for the state tithe; in 1787 the amount was 10 shillings per tithe." Regarding the state taxes which were first collected for 1782 and included : ibid. page xiii, "The tax on white males over 21 years and up was repealed on the 12th of October 1787." From 1782-1787 the list include white males 16-21. This column was not required beginning with the 1788 list; However, many commissioners continued to include this column. In later years these ages were again included for several years. Carefully, read all the column headings for each year. Cautions when consulting these lists. 1. Usually the heading is only on the first page of each list; therefore, you MUST make a copy of the first page. The headings do change from year to year. 2. The only notation of the year may be in the heading on the first page. Write the year on each page. 3. Cite the SPECIAL TAX COMMISSIONER'S NAME on each page copied. They collected within a precinct/geographic boundary. 4. Don't forget to cite the COUNTY NAME. Note: Land taxes for VA are separate lists then & now! Phyllis Vannoy Spiker

3. Cynthia, I assume you have the personal property tax list. I don't have 1790 handy but I know the first four columns are white titheables, Blacks over 16, Blacks over 12 & under 16, number of horses mares colts & mules. The other 3 columns probably were number of stud horses, ordinary licenses, and carriage wheels but I'm only about 75% sure of that.
