    3. Alley Are you referring to a photocopy of an original record submitted with an application to DAR? If so, you could write to NSDAR and see what the procedure is for obtaining a photocopy of the documents submitted. Also, you could contact the chapter registrar of the chapter that submitted the original application and see if someone has a photocopy of the original church records or if they are maybe still in existence in a library or archives. If the public record [recopied Books of Church records] have been verified and housed in a public library they should accept a copy of that record. The US government did when proving birth for SS#. She should write DAR Headquarters- easy to bring up on web for address to verify requirement. Lena

    1. RE: [VASHENAN] Pine Forge Beginning - PENNYBACKER & SAMUELS
    2. Tom, Are you talking about the Pine Forge below? Dirck Pennypacker...removed from the Perkiomen region of Pennsylvania to Sharpsburg, Maryland, established an iron working establishment there, which in the spring of 1781 was almost entirely swept away bry a freshet. Instead of rebuilding on that site he removed with his family over the mountains to Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Virginia. He first erected Redwill Furnance on Hawksbill Creek in New Market in what is now Page County and later erected another furnace a few miles below New Market, now called Pine Forge, Frederick county West(sic) Virginia. He was a pioneer iron master in that region, and the business established by him was continued by his son Benjamin and grandsons. Colonial and Revolutionary Families of Pennsylvania, Volume 1, John Jordan L.L.D. In a 1785 census he had 64 white persons, 1 dwelling and 3 buildings. The persons are thought to be his helpers at the forges and his Redwell furnace. By 16 Oct. 1784, the Pennybackers were re-settled at Pine Forge in the Shenandoah Valley, as there is a record of a letter written by Dirck to his brother Jacob following the death of their father John Pennebacker on 14 June of that same year: Pine Forge bought from George Bird, Grandson of Andrew Bird. Library of Va. WPA says he built Pine Forge in 1785 on part of the original Zane grant. Pine Forge located on Smith Creek four miles below New Market. He operated Redwell until April 1796 when he leased it to his former associate, Richard Patton. About that time he leased Pine Forge to his son Benjamin and his partners, Isaac Samuels and Geroge Mayberry. Between Derick Pennybaker and Hannah his wife of Shanandoah County and Benjamin Fawcett and Delilah his wife of Rockingham County [to] Benjamin pennybacker George Mayberry and Isaac Samuels of Shanandoah County (Iron Masters) ... consideration of one thousand Pounds ... a certain small tract of Land lying and being in Shanandoah County on Smith's Creek it being the same Land which was conveyed to the said Derick Pennybaker and Benjamin Fawcett by Mounce Bird and clair his wife by their Deed of the 29th day of June 1786 ... corner to Mounce Birds land ... containing about three acres of Land ... and including a Grist Mill Saw Mill and the greatest part of the forge commonly called the pine forge together with all things thereunto belonging and all houses and buildings ... Derick Pennybaker Hannah Pennybaker B. Fawcett Recorded: 23 Feb 1792 Delilah (X) Fawcett I'm working the Samuels families and relatives. Isaac Samuels married Dirck daughter Elizabeth and had the following business relationships. Source: Shenandoah County, Virginia Deed Book Series, vol. 2 Deed Books E, F, G, H. 1784-1792 [p. 156] Deed H-333, 23 Feb, 1792 bought land on Smith's Creek along with Benjamin Pennypacker and George Mayberry from Benjamin Fawcett. Deed H-338, 23 Feb. 1792, Andrew Correll and wife Elizabeth of Rockingham Co., VA and Samuel Coffman and wife Ann of Shenandoah Co. to Benjamin Pennybacker, George Mayberry and Isaac Samuels conveyed 10 1/2 a. on Smith Creek, being part of 300 a. Correll bought from George Harrison. Contains part of Pine Forge. Deed H-340 20? Feb, 1792 along with Benjamin Pennypacker and George Mayberry bought 257 acres on Smith's Creek from Samuel Caufman, witnessed Mounce Byrd. April 1796 Pine Forge was leased from Derrick Pennybacker and operated by Isaac Samuels, George Mayberry and Benjamin Pennypacker. In 1799 he sold his share to Mayberry and Pennybacker. Gen Soc Of Page Co., Va Vol 8 No 2 the Redwell Ironworks by H.E. Comstock. Before moving to the Valley, Dirck had a forge in Md. near Antietam (city or forge?) that got washed out in a flood. Would be especially interested if you run across any Pennybacker or Samuels data. 3. Hi Tom, "Though the exact date cannot be established Pennybacker moved to Shenandoah Co VA sometime during 1783 or 1784 where he either established or purchased Pine Forge on Smiths Creek southeast of the town of New Market"....He listed in the Shen Co 1785 heads of household census 64 souls, a dwelling and three other buildings there. [from MESDA and written by H E Comstock. May 1981 Vol VII, No 1] BUT there is a deed in Shen Co in Book F page 90--29 June 1786 where Derk Pennybacker & Benj. Fawcett purchased from Mounce Bird and Clair his wife a tract on Smith Creek "whereon now the mill stands & part of the forge being the same Bird purchased of Burr Harrison & William Strother.. including the mills and about three acres of land. And going back some more to Book C page 140 -- 15 Jul 1777 is the deed that records when Mounce Bird purchased the above tract from Harrison & Strother. Only Burr Harrisons Mill "is now standing on about 3 acres of land. No mention of the Forge in this deed. Lena F. Fuller

    1. [VASHENAN] My work on people in the valley in the 1700's
    2. I still have about 5 of the original 100 copies my book on Cornelius Bowman and his ancestors and descendants. If you would like a copy please send a check in the amount of $25 to me at: Edward L. Bowman, Attorney at Law 4800 Clearview Drive Bartlesville, OK 74006 Please include your mailing address and your email address. If you are not satisfied with the book I will refund your money if you return it undamaged within three days after you receive it. The book still needs some editing but my plan is to get the first version out in circulation so that I can receive comments and edit it for commercial publication. The work is 8/12 by 11 spiral bound printed by a print shop. It includes over 311 pages of text, 48 photos, and 31 copies of documents. The work provides evidence for the proposition that about 1763 Cornelius lived near Harrisonburg VA and that he was a descendant of Joris Jacobsen Bowman who was living in the New Netherlands by about 1651. There is also a hint that Joris Jacobsen was the son of a Jacob Pieterszen who was in the New Netherlands by 1652. I have not established just when Joris came to America. It is possible that Joris was not an immigrant but that instead that his father was the immigrant who was among the earliest settlers in the New Netherlands and on Long Island. It appears that my branch of the family of Joris Jacobsen migrated from Long Island to Staten Island to New Brunswick NJ to Readington NJ to Harrisonburg VA. It is believed that Cornelius Bowman (b abt 1740) married Susannah Pointer (Poynter?) or Painter about 1764 at the Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church near Harrisonburg VA. The book discusses a number of other Bowman families who lived in the Shenadoah Valley and other places in VA in the 1700's and it follows Cornelius from Abbotts Creek in NC to near Lenoir NC in the 1770's to Watauga(now TN) about 1782, then to KY by about 1795. It discusses his children and their children. It then takes off on my branch of the family which comes from Cornelius's son Rev. Thomas Bowman. Rev. Thomas's Bowman's son Absalom, my gg grandfather, moved from KY to AR or MO about the time of the Civil War.
