The 1793 personal property tax for the main valley shows lists were received on July 24 for the following people: Isaac Samuels, Geo. Mayberry, Charles Taylor, Jno. Doyle, Henry Painter, Edward Evans Jacob Revercomb Isaac Rose Love Morris Robert Holladay Martin Homes Michael Flaherty Daniel Furry, Daniel Furry Jr. Jacob Elkhart John Coldwell Senr, Jno. Coldwell, Thos. Coldwell John Bushong Senr, Andw. Bushong, Philip Bushong, Philip Fisher Owen Batman Jesse Bilderback James Burns Betty Allen, Frederick Shafer and on July 25 Joseph Davis, John Davis Michael Roop James Skeen No lists were collected on the 26th and 27th, and by the 28th the tax commissioner (Tavener Beale) was clearly in the area between Strasburg and Cedar Creek. The list appears to be one where Beale visited the taxpayers. I think there is strong circumstantial evidence these two days were collected near Pine Forge. My question is whether anyone can shed light on Owen Batman and Joseph Davis. Are these possibly the same people who show up in Rockingham County when Owen Batman married Mary Davis, daughter of Joseph, in 1807? Thanks, Tom P.S. to Joe Baker: I told you I had seen Revercomb's name.

DOBKINS. So far, I have not been able to positively identify his parents, even though I have gathered a great deal of information from various sources and references. Several years ago, I compiled basic information into EARLY DOBKINS OCCURRENCES-- http://home.rmci.net/dyingst/earlydob.htm. The original compilation arranged the entries by locality; that is, State and/or Country. Now, I have provided an additional list ordered by Name. My intent here is to share the occurrences and sources for the benefit of DOBKINS researchers; not to make any interpretations or inferences about possible or probable family relationships. I have omitted most occurrences after Thomas moved to MO in 1817 as I am principally interested in tracking down his ancestors in TN and VA and, also, in Great Britain where I think the family line originated. I would appreciate hearing from anyone that might have additional information up to and during the time period covered in the listing that might assist me and others in our research. Donovan
I ran across a useful site today that I wanted to share. It is www.eh.net which has a link called "How Much is That?" which allows you to calculate the exchange between British money and US money in any given year and also allows you to compare US money back when with today, although they give you 5 different ways to do the calculation and you have to be pretty up on economics to understand which is the right one to use. Anyway, it's the most useful site I've ever seen on such stuff. Tom
Pam, I've misplaced (that's senior talk for lost) your e-mail, so I'll use the list to reach you. If you haven't seen it, the 1808-1812 account book for Pine, Paoli, and Union Forges is in the Lord Fairfax Community College library at Middletown, courtesy of Dr. H. E. Comstock. There are several entries for Kingree's, probably for goods purchased. When next you're in the Valley, it might be worth a look. Tom

Thanks Lena and others, I'm familiar with the deeds and the general story is self-consistent but I'm looking for something more. I'm probably being hard-headed but I don't accept an omission in a deed as strong evidence. The other funny thing is why only part of the forge would be on the three acres. I have HAWKINS near New Market. A red flag went up when I saw the Pennybacker posting. Does anyone know of a link between the two names? Samuel Hawkins b. 1762 near New Market knew the ZANE that Zanesville, Ohio was named for, and in fact they both lived near each other on the Ohio River near what is now Wheeling. There are also Hawkins named Mounce. Samuel Hawkins was a blacksmith at about the age of 12. Perhaps he was Pennybacker's apprentice. Samuel's father was Joseph born abt. 1708, possibly in Md. Samuel is buried in Eaton, OH. I have a photograph of his gravemarker if anyone is interested. Rebecca James
