That's one of two stories. Prior to being called Gooney Run, this creek was known as Sugartree creek. You will see references in the Shenandoah County record books and old descriptions of properties with the SugarTree, Sugartree, Sugar Tree name. I have an article written by Rebecca Poe in the newspaper in 1985 on Gooney Manor. From the late 1700's when its first settlers established mills on Gooney Run through 1927 when a handle factory closed, its industrial and commercial output was unequalled in Warren County. It was the center of Lord Fairfax's 14,000 acre tract and took its name from the largest of seven creeks originating in the Blue Ridge and flowing north and west into the valley. Most of the creeks flow into Gooney Run which empties into the South Fork of the Shenandoah River at Karo on Route 340. My uncle Hilery Jennings worked at the barrel factory there and my grandparents Charles and Ollie Jennings attended the first church there. The house they raised their family in which was left to my grandfather by Samuel Hillary Rudacille is still there and in great shape. My grandfather delivered the mail from Front Royal to the first post office and met and married my grandmother there. It was about 1770 that a large amount of permanent settlers arrived there, but residents were not able to own their land until after 1812 when Lord Fairfax's heir sold the entire tract to James and John Marshall. There were a tannery, a stave factory, a hardwood factory, distilleries, a cooper shop and the handle factory. Before that Gooney Run was the power for at least eight mills ( one carding mill, several sawmills, and some grist mills). I hope this much of the article answers some of your questions.

According to Vogt and Kethley in Shenandoah County Marriage Bonds, Jacob Revercomb and Polly Farrer, dau of Thos, were bonded to be married January 12, 1817. I believe the family location to be near Luray. In that case, the bride's surname may not be correct. Does anyone have information on the actual spelling on that marriage bond? Thanks, Tom

This may be a strange posting but I am researching the family of Henry Kibler aka Kubler, I am trying to determine the village in Germany where he or his family originated, in order to do this as analytical as possible, I was hoping that each person that has tried to do this previously post or email me, what they checked and the results, this in turn could connect them to several other Kubler lines ///thanks
Bev, No. She was raised Lutheran. She was born in Shenandoah County but some of her siblings were b. in Loudoun Co. and baptized as children in the New Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church and, before that, other siblings were born in Frederick Co., MD and baptized as children in the Evangelical Lutheran Church there. She married a Baptist (Jacob Runyon) in 1823. Is anyone researching the name Kendall or Kindle in Shenandoah Co? I'm looking for Jacob Kindle (later Kendall) who md Kitty Ann Newman in Rockingham Co Va in 1826. I'm not finding any evidence of Jacob in Rockingham. It' was Kitty's home county, so Jacob may have been from elsewhere in Va. Any help appreciated. Thanks! Ann in OH > >
