    3. Hi Alley, I don't know if anyone else's bouncing is due to same reason mine might be or not. I recently had a really persistent problem getting my mail to come in. The internet server was the problem. After about 4 days of hassle, I got together with my tech and we redid my user name and password and solved the problem. I have no idea what caused it, but I had to make changes to get things going again. I expect this happens to other folks as well. I've talked to friends who've been thru same thing. Thankfully, it looks like VASHENAN didn't boot me out. 1. [VASHENAN] Personal Property Tax/Bushongs
    2. Tom, Thats a great point. I have studied these lists over and over again along with the map I have by ADC trying to pinpoint land where I have found deeds. It is interesting that you mentioned the BUSHONGS as I have the deed where William and Catherine RODGERS transferred title to them. Since I am interested in Robert ROGERS who married Millie LEWIN who is on the opposite list (the one that KNISELY is enumerated). There is also a James ROGERS listed a few of the years; but I have not been able to link James or Robert to each other or to William and Catherine Rodgers. I have a wonderful copy of William Rodgers in his statements during the Fairfax Land Suit that pretty much describes the land he sold to BUSHONG. Anyhow, thanks for the tip. Chocy

The other list (for the main valley) will always have Bushongs near the start of the B's. 3. Eugene, I just came in a few minutes ago so can only send a partial answer tonight. More to follow. The 1830 census shows all the Roy's in the "Eastern District" I see James Roy and an Anna who may be the widow of William. Anyway, I believe all these folks to be in the Luray or Fort Valleys (this from the tax records which show the Roy's in the 97th regt. area). Putting the two together says they lived north of Overall Run, in either the Luray or Fort Valley. The personal property tax lists are available from the LDS or from the state library in Richmond. I have a few and I will look at them and try to figure out neighbors. In general, neighbors had their property lists recorded for the same day; that's not absolutely true and I always suggest checking more than one year before drawing any conclusion. I hope to find a neighbor whose location I know (somebody like Gilbert Morgan or Charles Buck, for example). Often I can figure out a location within a 5 mile circle that way. Tom "H. For example, Samuel Bare may have the List A and Joseph Strickler may have the List B; however, they have the same people they had the year before. As the years go on, I noted that that same district person could be assigned List A or B; but the people on that particular list are are always the same ones he enumerated the previous year. In an effort to do that, I copied different pages of interest and in some of the years I have copied the entire year as a baseline in an effort to find the locations of the families I am interested. For example, if anyone on this list, knows where George Knisely lived, I could pinpoint the district that Joseph Strickler operated from in a number of years. 3. Eugene, I can't comment on Census Images since I've never looked at it. But, I'm 100% sure of what I wrote: Pine Forge and Speedwell were just small sites - not districts. If you look at page 159 of the 1820 census, you can see a horizontal line all across the page just above James Sterrett's name. There is a second horizontal line just below John L??? (I'm sorry - my eyes are tired tonight and I can't read that name). Next to that second line is the notation "Population of Speedwell Forge" In the left margin is the notation (Speedwell Forge. Then, just below that second line is Benjamin Blackford's name which starts the names for Isabella Furnace. On page 165, there is a short, heavy, horizontal line just below Daniel Strickler's name and then Benjamin Pennybaker's name. Then just below Hannah Griffy's name is another heavy, short line, and in the left margin is the notation Pine Forge. It's easy to tell that the census taker quickly moved away from Pine Forge as you come to several Hawkins just down the page. On the following page, you can see Abraham Alger, Henry Price, John Koontz, William Price, etc who are all near Alma. So, I think he picked up Pine Forge, got a few people near Hawkinstown, then rode across the mountain and up Battle Creek. Anyway, tell me who you're looking for and I can maybe help you. Tom "H. 1. Re: [VASHENAN] Pine Forge District
    2. On the copy of the 1820 census for Shenandoah County, I have (which I believe is a transcribed one) In addition to Pine Forge District, it list Speedwll Forge with 8 names, one of which is James Sterritt. Other districts are; Isabella Furnace, Luray, and Woodstock. THE Pine Forge District seems to be a large district so, I suppose it did in fact extend from the county boundry near Front Royal to near the New Market area. On second thought, in re-reading this, there are 16 names under Pine Forge and then a row of asterisks separating that list from the next which is not identified. The next portion definitely was South of Front Royal because I can identify several names from that area. So, in fact it appears my ancestors were not in the Pine Forge District after all. Sorry for the confusion. Guess sometimes we have to be more careful and even read between the lines. LOL Walt

    2. I believe I know where Pine Forge was near New Market but it doesn't make a lot of sense that people from that area would be involved in a census in Front Royal. Quite a distance even over the mountain. In both of our cases our individuals lived just South of Front Royal. Just curious why they would call it the Pine Forge Distict on the 1820 census. Obviously, the same person did the census for the area caled "Pine forge District". Since the enumerators were obviously asigned certain named districts, i.e. Shenandoah, Luray, Pine Forge, etc. sems like there would be a record some place as to the oficial localities of the named districts. 1. Re: [VASHENAN] Pine Forge District
    2. Tom Pierce
    3. There was no Pine Forge District, nor a Speedwell District either. Pine Forge was just an industrial site (a forge and a coupla mills) about 5 miles N of New market on Smiths Creek. Speedwell was the same sort of place about 1.5 miles N of Luray on Hawksbill Creek. When the 1820 census says "Speedwell", it means the eight families starting with James Sterrett. Likewise, when it says "Pine Forge", it means the sixteen families starting with Benjamin Pennybaker. The census taker jumped around quite a bit, so there's no guarantee that a name on the page after "Pine Forge" is anywhere close. There are other ways to place people. The personal property tax lists usually covered a specific geographical area on a particular day. The 1830 census can also give you a fairly good idea if you're looking in Luray Valley. Tom "H. Eugene McInturff" wrote: > Thanks Walt for the reply. Just where was Pine Forge?
