Chocy, I would like to know what you find in your tax lists for Joseph Hawkins, and Samuel Hawkins. thanks. Years 1782, and later for Samuel. Netti Schreiner-Yantis and Florene Speakman Love in 1787 compiled and published "The Personal Property Tax Lists for the Year 1787 for Shenandoah County, Virginia." They also published similar 1787 lists for other Virginia Counties. The original publisher was Genealogical Books in Print, 6818 Lois Drive, Springfield, VA 22150. I do not know if the booklet is still in print or if the publisher is now in business. If unsuccessful, you might try Paper Treasures, New Market, VA. The website is <A HREF="http://www.abebooks.com/home/papertreasures/">http://www.abebooks.com/home/papertreasures/</A>. The 1787 tax list is a unique one. It was the only year the tax commissioners were mandated to actually call on every person at that person's residence and make a note of the day of the visit. Therefore, neighbors were better identified this year than in others years when the tax payers visited the commissioner.
Chocy, Yeah, I found the same thing on 1782. I always wanted to index it but my eyes are no longer good enough to read that terribly faded writing. I'm slowly indexing 1793 now and I get eyestrain usually after about 40 minutes (It would have helped if John Marshall had used a word processor with Arial font!). I don't know much about the Rutters and Rogers. I see them from time to time and think they probably lived in upper Warren County, maybe near Browntown? There was also a Rogers family up in the Honeyville area of Page but I seem to remember they showed up later. So far as I know, all of Joseph Strickler's lists were for the 97th. I don't know why the "A" and "B" designations - probably something added by a clerk sometime. I don't know who did 1788. That's a list I've never used, except for a couple of look-ups. That might have been Tavener Beale; does it have any slaves listed by name? Tom Chocybrown@aol.com wrote: > Tom, > I have the 97th Reg. Tom, I have the 97th Reg. (Shenandoah County, Personal Property Tax Lists) for the years 1782 through 1830. This takes up about three notebooks and I don't have all the pages for each year in all the years, as it was too large a job; however, I have the first page (A's) on most all the years so that I would have the original column titles. Since I am researching RITTER/RUTTER and RODGERS/ROGER family I have all the "R" names for the list where they appear. The first couple of years there is only one list per year. After that, as you know, there is a List A and a List B which has a commissioner assigned and the District would be named for that person. For example, Joseph Strickler could have List B one year and List A the next year; however, his District appears to be the same because the same people show up on his list. Every few years the District commissioner changes but that is how you have to ID the two lists. My family seems to be located southeast of Woodstock and that was Joseph Stricklers list. I have ALL the "Rs" for that list for ALL the years 1782 through 1830. Depending on the year, I may or may not have the "Rs" for the other list. There are a number of years that I have copied the entire year such as 1788 which is all one list and has no one assigned to it. John Williams, Clerk of the County signed it on the 18th day of August 1789. I have all of 1782; however some of the entries are hard to read. Anyhow, I have not had time to index all that; but I have a fair amount of information and would be glad to look up something as times permits. Chocy
Chocy, Bless you for doing that. What years do you have? I have 1783 (both lists), 1789 97th Regt, 1792 13 th Regt, 1793 both regt, 1800 97th, 1802 13th, 1809 97th, and 1813 97th. Yup. James Kendell turned in his tax list on April 15. He had two tithables and 1 horse. Other people who turned in their list on April 15 were Daniel Anderson, Archibald Allen, Haws Barbee, William Barclay, Robert barclay, Arnold Bonafield, John Cattell (of Fredk), Zadock Conner, John carter, Charles Carter, John Conner, Joseph W. Crown, Thomas Craig, James Craig, Washington Duke, Vincent Foster, William Fisher, John Fisher, James Hancock, John Hancock Sr., Benjm Hancock, John Halla, Aaron Henry (of May), George Hancock, John Hendron, John Hancock Jr., William Lang, Thomas Lanham, George Leeth, Alexander Lawson, Henry Lambert, Gilbert Morgain, Nottery Maddox, James Marlow, William Moore, Mary McKay, Thomas Marks, Godwin Maddox, Lewis Miller, Zadock Sandsberry, Jesse Steed, Henry Smoot, George Suter, John Suter, John Salliew, Joseph Townsend, Simeon Vaught, Elijah Weekly, Jacob Weekly, Robertson Weekly, Shelah Watters, William Wroe, Nehemiah Wood Jr., William Walker, Philip Zenke. I don't really know these people, but I see a couple names I associate with the foot of the Blue Ridge, and even on the Ridge, in the Gooney Manor/Limeton area. Again, I'm a little suspicious of using just one year to locate people, but it's maybe a start. Tom Geo & Ann Davis wrote: > Does the name Kendall/Kindle appear on this list? Nancy and listers, I, took, have selected years and pages from 1782 through 1830. As time permits, I would be happy to check a specfic name if I have the year you need. Chocy

Great Tom.......I found in the McKay papers at Samuels library in Front Royal where Elijah Roy had, in 1837, four tracts of land totaling 998 acres on/near Flint Run........Eugene
Eugene, I continued looking at the 1820 census, from about p. 162 on and I don't think I ever realized how disjointed it is. It looks like the census-taker ranged up and down the Luray Valley several times, picking up some people and skipping some till later?? But, I did happen to see that John Roy went from a titheable in 1809 to an estate in 1813 so I looked up his will and that tells a pretty good tale of where James and William lived. It says he gives his land under the Fort Mountain to James and that the land is next to William's. So, at least at that point they likely live on the west side of the South Fork, near the end of the Massanutten, someplace close to the Warren Co. airport. Thanks for showing me how strange 1820 census is. Tom "H. Eugene McInturff" wrote: > Thanks Tom. I suspecte that you're right in Elijah being near > Gooney. Nancy, I have a photocopy of the 1809 personal property tax list for the 97th Regt. (Luray Valley and Fort Valley). Where are you getting the list you are looking at?? Just curious if it's ancestry or you have a book or what - Nancy
Thanks Tom. I suspecte that you're right in Elijah being near Gooney. Eugene, I got unsubscribed for a day or so, probably because e-mail kept bouncing. I think my new ISP has really tight spam filters and that may be the problem. Anyway, I looked at the 1809 personal property tax list and found Elijah on the same day as a bunch of Morgans and McKays. This is a quick GUESS but it looks like he's somewheres near the mouth of Gooney Creek. William is a problem. He's on what I call the "Impossible" list - the one that basically covers southern Springfield in Page County. It's a huge list and includes people that I recognize all the way from the foot of the Blue Ridge to the Fort Valley. I call it impossible because I can't imagine how it was gathered or how to tell anything about neighbors. I'll continue looking for James. Tom "H. Sorry Tom, I have been trying for the last few days to find Thomas in any type of record but have had no luck. I did find a reference in a genealogy at rootsweb that stated Mary Forrer's father was Henry Forrer. I have not found Henry anywhere either. Since this is not my family I am going to stop looking. If I ever see anything more I will let you know. Mary Message text written by INTERNET:VASHENAN-L@rootsweb.com >Thanks, Mary. Do you know why there is not mention of Thomas Forrer in the records that I looked at (admittedly very quickly)? Did he die soon after? Tom<
We have tax list images at our website. For Shenandoah try this link: http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.com/~vataxlists/Shenandoah/ We only have 2 different years as these are used to recreate lost censuses. But it shows what the tax lists look like and the info they contain. I am interested in obtaining information from such Tax Lists. Can you check your information for the surname Brumbaugh? What sort of information can be obtained from Tax Lists? Thanks!
Hi folks, Just wanted to let you know that I believe the bouncing email problems are due to the most recent viruses circulating. As some of you know, I work for a computer software company and we have been majorly attacked by the SoBig worm. The effects were similar to this, only the virus clogged our network so badly that we were forced to shut it down completely for a day to clean it up. If you don't use anti-virus software, now is the time to begin doing so - and if you do, please be sure you update it frequently (once a week at least). Of course, your ISP has to be protected also and you have no control over that, but you can protect yourself. I hope this answers any questions you might have and that we can get rid of these viruses. I have definitely seen enough of them and the problems they cause at work. take care all, Don *************************************************** Don Silvius Coordinator Shenandoah County VAGenWeb <http://www.rootsweb.com/~vashenan/vashenan.html> <dsilvius@intrepid.net> <dsilvius@tlcdelivers.com> ***************************************************
