    3. Hi Nancy, thanks for the reply. Yes, I would have covered only surnames of interest, as well! I studied will abstracts at the Mesa AZ LDS FHC several years ago. Found a couple of Margaret WILSONs but not mine. One I had hopes for, but she later married someone else, not my HUPP. Darn! I thought sure I would find her when I happened on a book of guardianships and such. No, she was not there! However, the marriage records I found in a microfilm show the guardianship of Benjamin WILLIAMS, at the time of her marriage.. Her father's name was not shown. Nor her mother's. Her mother may have been still living? But in those days a child needed a male guardian! I am not sure that it is important, but in the Bible records (I have the Bible) her name is shown as Margarett. Her nickname was Peggy. Thanks for the help. I will have to keep looking! In the marriage records I found yesterday or the day bef online, I found several WILSONs listed as married in that time period, including my Margaret. Her guardian is not shown, no parents are shown for any of these WILSON brides and grooms. I did find an Archibald WILSON in another record yesterday, and figure he is the father or relative at least of the Archibald W who m in 1791. Rather unusual name. 1. [VASHENAN] Wilsons Will Abstracts and Entries in the Personal Property Tax Lists
    2. Nancy Corder Halvorson
    3. Joyce, I also have a rather extensive list from the personal tax lists from 1782-1829. These lists have been re-organized by dates so I could determine who was living near each other. However, my lists only cover surnames related to my families, so I'm not sure how helpful they might be. I did copy down Willsons. The Willsons I found are listed at the end of this message. My oldest known ancestor was Reuben Corder who became the guardian of Martin and Elizabeth (Corder) Pence in Champaign County, OH in 1830. They m. in Shenandoah County, VA in 1812. In 1824, a Martha Corder m. David Willson in Champaign County, OH. In attempting to find Reuben's parents, I've also been looking at the Willsons, hoping the Willsons were inter-marrying with other extended family surnames.. The following are very brief Will Abstracts that mostly only name the family members mentioned in the wills. Several Margarets are mentioned. However, they all appear to be married and none to a Hupp. John Willson of Berkeley County, (W)VA was associated with the founding of the Hopewell MM House in Frederick County, VA. Members seemed to live a long ways away. 1. Re: ?? about (RE: [VASHENAN] PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LIST)
    2. Tom Pierce
    3. Kym, In the years you're looking at, a tithable was 16. The tax was taken every year except for 1808 when they failed to pass the enabling legislation. These are just the personal property tax lists. There are also real estate tax lists. Most lists have just the name of the person responsible for the tax (that is, head of family or household) and the tithables are counted but not named. Often, as soon as someone married and started a home of his own, he popped up in the following year's list. If you want to look at the lists yourself, they are available from the LDS or by interlibrary loan from the VA state library (I don't know what restrictions exist on this). Tom David & Kym Pitman wrote: >I'm sure these are very stupid questions, but for someone like myself who >has not researched property tax lists, even stupid questions need answers. > >1. 3. Chocy, Your posting 29 Aug. about Personal Property Tax Lists for Shenandoah County interests me. My ancestor, Tunis Quick, Senior (I'm a Tunis Sr.'s 5g-grandson), purchased the farm of Michael Reader|Rader in 1794 on the North side of the North fork of the Shenandoah River. Tunis died in 1815. He had a relative Abraham and sons Tunis, Jr., James|Jacob, Martin, Petrus, and Ouken. In the Tunis Quick, Sr., estate sale a certain William Quick (not known by me to be related) is one of the many people to whom items were sold. You noted that you have all the "R" names, 1782-1830. I hope you have the "Q" names also. When you have the chance I would sure appreciate hearing whether there is any information about these relatives of mine. Dell Quick

    2. Does anyone remember what year the tax lists began?? I'm interested in finding Matthias Beaver before 1787. In 1787 he was in Rockingham Co., VA, abt. 1 mile west of Tenth Legion. Before, possibly in 1784 I was told he was on the Shenandoah Co., VA tax list with 6 members in his family. Does anyone have easy access to these years? Marc Archer in Flint, MI

    2. JW, You are correct as far as the years 1782-1786 not having the actual day and month next to the titheable; however, all the years starting with 1787 DO have the month and day of the year the titheable was enumerated; thus most years you will find the same people within the the same letter of the ABC's listed together or close to the same day. What I have done with my family is go back through the whole years and check out all the people that were enumerated on that day or close to that day. That has brought wonderful results because the names of the other people are usual the names of the families that appear on documents that I have concerning my family. This becomes a solid lead to finding information I need. Chocy

    2. Tom, The 1788 final recap shows the following totals for Shenandoah County, VA following from columns left to right: Pages; listed 1 through 38 No. White Tithables; none listed in any or row & no column total Blacks over 16; has each page totals plus column total #241 Over 12 under 16; has each page totals plus column total #53 Horses; has each page totals plus column total #4095 Carriage wheels; has each page totals plus column total #2 Ordinary Licenses; each page totals plus column total #7 Billard Tables; each page totals plus column total #1 No. of Stud Horses; each page totals plus column total #20 Price Covering; shows amounts for each page; no column total-somthing unreadable Preachers (hard to read ?), Physians, Apothacarey & Surgeons; pg totals; col #2 On the 1788 Personal Property Tax List the first column gives the actual month, day, and year the person was enumerated. The second column list the person responsible for the tax. The second column lists the name of the white male titheables above 21 years old. The following columns are as listed above and in that order. The interesting thing here is that each year the columns change for listing of the names thereby giving you different information on the make up of the household as it pertains to the age of white males. This is NOT done in all years. There is one (don't have time right now to find it) where the second column names the white males between 16 and 21. Just found it------------1787. Anyhow, I got to get going on my chores. Chocy

    3. I'm sure these are very stupid questions, but for someone like myself who has not researched property tax lists, even stupid questions need answers. 1. At what age did a male become tithable? 16? 21? 2. How often were the property tax roles taken? Yearly? I'd like to know before I blindly start asking people who have access to the lists to check for my ancestor, who I am ASSUMING was living in Shenandoah Co. from his birth in ca. 1810 until he moved to Ohio in ca.1835. All circumstantial evidence points to the Shenandoah Co. area. I'll do more in-depth research as soon as I can talk my family into a "vacation" in Richmond. For now I'm just trying to gather clues from afar. Kym
