    3. Chocy, Thanks for the information re Elizabeth Quick, which I did not have. Since I have no indication the Quicksburg Quicks are related to me I haven't researched them particularly yet, but will save the tidbit you provided which is extra incentive to look into that family. Thanks for keeping a helpful eye out! Please refer to the first look-ups to have some idea of what pages I have in my notebooks. This takes quite a bit of time, so I don't want to repeat information. The names listed below stating "Done for years 1800-1830" are still being looked for in years 1782-1799. If they don't appear on the list then I don't have those surnames on the lists in my possession. That does not mean they are not on one of lists; it only means I don't have a page with that name on it. You may want to order the film. 3. Tom, I am not sure what date the HUPP and ENGLISH families left VA for OH, and have seen conflicting info on that. Since Mary HUPP married Joseph ENGLISH in 1819 in Licking Co., we can be sure that they were there by that date. I have also seen that Joseph enlisted in the War of 1812 from OH, but think that is wrong. Probably from VA. His records at the Nat'l Archives are lost. I don't know anything abt how political Samuel was in OH? His grandson, Nathaniel Anderson ENGLISH, was quite political, although he was more of an entrepreneur than politician. He may have been Quaker, as he served the North in other ways than being a soldier. He built forts for the North. Just as dangerous as being a soldier, and he was captured a couple of times. Someone on this list commented abt the people in VA who hated slavery. The HUPP and ENGLISH families were among those. My mother commented once how her family members were opposed to slavery although they had lived in the South. Perhaps because they lived there! Well, this is something to study later. Tim HUPP is the authority on all things HUPP. I will have to write to him and ask what he knows. However, he concentrates on VA, not OH, so don't know if he would be of help with that. 2. Shirley, I believe if you do a Google.com search engine search for Appleton's it should bring up the bookstore where you need to order the book. The bad news is I missed placed my book two days ago along with my garage opener. The good news is I found my garage opener in the bottom of the laundry basket, so the book should show up soon-----------guess I have been trying to do too many things at once! Anyhow, the book is a series for the different areas of Virginia. If you look for "1815 Virginia Landowners" it should bring you to a selection list. At that point, you want the Northern Neck area which will have a Volume number with a list of all the counties it covers. I believe I paid somewhere around $35 to $40 for my book and it is very valuable in locating the approximate area where the property is located. Taking the information from the different personal property and land tax lists you can figure out a lot. I have since copied the original Frederick County, VA 1815 land tax records and I can say for the most part that the book is pretty correct; however, a warning to ALL----------------there is nothing like looking at the film yourself! I found a few errors concerning the direction from the courthouse the property was located; instead of the SE the book said SW and that really threw me until I went into the original record and found the book had made the error--------------I know, for sure, NOW, that the property was in fact SE as was stated in the original record. Also, when reading the original record sometimes they are hard to read and you may be able to interrupt the writing better based on information you already know concerning the subject. Also, I lost one of my relatives and could not find him in one of my index books. When I was checking out the different tax years I found him listed as a White Male over 21 years of age whose tax was being paid by the first person listed--------"Person responsible for the Tithable" along with several other men. Each year is different, so you just don't know what you might find------------if you can, order the original and take a look for yourself. You may be very surprised at what you may find! Anyhow Shirley, if you can't locate the book let me know and when I find my copy I will post all the needed information. Good Luck, Chocy

    3. Chocy, Would you elaborate on your map or source for the 1815 landowners? Is it in a book or a separate map? Do you know if its still available for purchase? Thanks.. Shirley S. He may have lived in Rockingham or Shenandoah County. I am particularly looking for the name of his wife. I think he may have married Mary Pirkey in the early 1850's. She was born about 1830. Please respond directly to my address since I am not a subscriber to the Shenandoah County mail list. Thanks in advance for your help. Jim Messersmith Rockville, VA

My ancestor, Robert Stokesberry (Strichberry/Stretchberry in Shenandoah Co. records) also migrated to Licking county--somewhere between 1814 and 1820. He bought land in Licking Co. in 1820, and only held it two years, then sold it and went on to Ross County, OH. The really interesting thing is that Samuel Hupp signed the Robert's marriage bond. I'd love to learn more about Samuel Hupp and his family, since I've been unable to learn much about my Robert's family. Evidently there was a fairly close connection. What was the time frame that Samuel Hupp migrated to Licking Co.? Linda Stokesbury Brennan Joyce Franke wrote: > > My family went to Newark, Licking Co., OH. 3. Thanks Chocy, 'preciate it. Jacob Kendall came to Highland Co OH about 1836 but his father may still have been in that area. 1. [VASHENAN] BIRDS/RUTTERS
    2. Sherry, That is so very interesting! I recently found a deed where John Ritter/Rutter sold to George Knisely 150 acres in Powells Big Fort in 1799. Along with the land, he sold everything on the place it seems. Listed on the inventory going to George Knisely were quarry tools! He also used a block I:MR in place of where the "x" should have been between his first and last name on the deed. I still can not find where he purchased the land or when he purchased it. I wonder if there was iron on the land? Now there are two John Rutters listed on the Personal Property Tax List going upwards from the 1782. On one year, one of the John Rutters had written behind his name (North fork); but I can't say for sure which John Rutter was on the North fork. I consulted the 1815 Shenandoah County landowners and found George Knisely's property10 miles south east of the Woodstock Courthouse. I consulted a cemetery listing and found George Knisely and his family buried around Dietrick. A lister said that Dietrick was over the mountain from Powells Big Fort (I am from California so all I see is the maps flat surfaces). You are absolutely right about these families coming into the valley together. Do you know about where in Shenandoah County your Birds lived? Got to get to bed. I am in the process of painting my kitchen so I need to get up bright and early. Thank you for the great information. It will be interesting to find out if the Birds were close neighbors to the Rutters. Chocy
